Every so often the universe delivers one of those special parties, the ones that stick with you and send shivers down your spine bassline. A few months ago in a brief recess between interstate lockdowns, we had the absolute pleasure of playing the closing set at the Bridge courtyard for our friends at Lovejoy. We woke up at 6am, had a 7/11 coffee and a tequila and headed straight into the rave for a 9am set time(!!!). The pure rapture that ensued thereafter was captured via this recording. We originally weren't going to share it, but as we and our Sydney dance community family are both currently locked down, we thought it would be nice to relive the moment together, from our lounge rooms to yours.

With what was mostly a full and fruitful year for us with many beautiful moments, we now turn our eyes forward to what is looking to be a very exciting year for us at Phonica as we walk into our 20th year of being alive. 2022 saw our mix series get even more killer contributions from artists like Paramida, Sally C, Fred P, Eden Burns, Alex Kassian, Erol Alkan and more. 2023's series line up plans to keep moving up and we have opened this years mix season in the capable hands of two of the finest DJ/Producers doing it right now. Bringing nothing but powerful, euphoric and goddess energies it can only be Octo Octa and Eris Drew of T4T Luv NRG. Amazingly celebrated for their strand of psychedelic, rolling progressive, trancey-house and break rhythms we can't think of two better selector's to take on our series. With an excellently curated compilation and mix for our good friends at Fabric last year as well as two banging cassettes on T4T we can't begin to imagine what this year has in-store for Maya and Eris but we have no doubt it's even more on the upward trajectory! Most likely to the heavens and back! We had a chat with Maya and Eris to see what they have been up to lately and little about how they approached the mix.

Octo Octa is an artist for the heads. Maya Bouldry-Morrison's creates a finely-tuned marriage of exquisite compositional flare, meticulously-sculpted sonics, and primal dance-floor functionality. Based in Brooklyn, she's been pushing her unique sonic perspective and shimmering club-ready earworms since 2011 with releases on Running Back, 100% Silk and Argot. 

She's put together a mix for the 26th Good Room Podcast ahead of her live set at the club on February 12 saying "It's kind of funny because it's not what I DJ a lot, but it's what I listen to the most at home. I mostly DJ vocal house, probably carry a few too many Chandler records".

Good Room Podcast 026 - Octo Octa

‘Off the Streets’ is a compilation of electronic music composed and performed by local (Waterford City) and International producers.

Since the financial crash in 2008, Ireland has witnessed an immense increase in the number of people sleeping rough on the streets. The recession has been particularly hard on vulnerable people and marginalised sections of society with a sharp increase since last year of people sleeping rough on the streets. Furthermore, high unemployment, poverty, inadequate mental health services, lack of emergency accommodation and severe cuts to funding for front line services have had a direct impact on the levels of people sleeping rough on the streets.

The aim of ‘Off the Streets’ is to further highlight the increasing homeless crises in Waterford and to donate 100% of the proceeds raised through the sale of the album to ‘Helping Hands’ who provide free hot meals for those who have fallen on hard times.

Helping Hands was formed 1 year ago, when the need for a night time service for the ever-increasing numbers of homeless and those in need was recognised. The group started simply, serving teas, sandwiches’ etc. and giving out clothes, sleeping bags duvets to those sleeping rough. They now provide hot meals six nights a week from St Patricks Gateway as well as looking after several families in the wider Waterford area who have fallen on hard times. Helping Hands rely solely on the kindness of the general public to keep us stocked up with food and provisions. None of the volunteers receive any expenses or wages from our group.

All of the local and international artists featured on the album, have graciously donated their music to this urgent and worthy cause. There are 4 UK artists and 5 Irish artists featured on the album, Artists featured are Manchester producer/DJ Moodymanc aka Danny Ward, David Anthony, Soulfuledge, 0.0.R.S. London (O.O.R.S. Landhouse & Raddantze @ Echoes from Venus's 'Welcome Home' 28.12.2018

Stephen Flynn is back, and brings us the first installment of playdate sessions 2021 with a mix entitled, ‘The Ronin’.   With its downtempo grooves and deep melodies transitioning us into a new year, it complements the morning after a quarantined New Years Eve and gives us fresh hope for a new year. 
Long time veteran Stephen Flynn is a DJ’s DJ. He is a tastemaker on the highest level, and after the first time you hear a mix or hear him play, you instantly know you are witnessing something special. 

He spent his formative years absorbing the sounds at legendary Irish nightclubs like Sir Henry’s (Cork, Ireland) where, he found his inspirations.  Later, he moved to the US where he became the co-founder of late 90’s/early 2000 Miami party called PHYLOS Sessions, with Omar Suardy, Edwin Adams and Terron Darby.  Later they joined forces to become part of a musical movement called - DHM, (Deep House Movement) and spent the better part of the decade playing at the biggest nightclubs of that time.  

Today, Stephen maintains and values his low key lifestyle.  He stays out of the mainstream and social media,  but is always under the radar developing his refined taste in music.  This mix is special as its a homage to one of his children, and we are pleased to kick off 2021 with his mix.  We present to you playdate sessions 028: Stephen Flynn.
