Back to the UK for the latest podcast episode: Manchester-based DJ Yant might be a relative newcomer but his name is starting to do some serious rounds. His full-on bass assaults have garnered attention from techno top brass like Setaoc Mass and Ben Sims, making 2022 a year which might just prove his zero hour. His productions are gaining momentum too, and a freshly launched party series titled Refocus promises to breathe new life into his chosen neck of the woods. For the latter, he himself plays and encourages longer set-times, with the aim of promoting more daring, less obvious track selections and pushing forward his thundering big-room sound. Just a heads up: these burgeoning beats are resonant, sweaty and thrilling; Bassiani Podcast 157 is raw, ferocious techno from this fledgling British heavyweight.

Hailing from Manchester, with one of the most impressively diverse catalogues techno has to offer in modern times, Yant returns to the SK_X series with ‘The Raum’ EP. 

Leading with ‘Vortex of Lincos’, a pounding journey through a maelstrom of winding synth lines, captivating percs and rising tension throughout.  ‘The Raum’ brings this A side to a close with a darker tone - featuring pounding kicks, muffled vocal cuts and eerie atmospheric texture to match. 
‘Linguism’ leads the flip side with plucky bass and hypnotic tones before the EP concludes with ‘Transient Pulse’, a unique display of interesting polyrhythms and rolling arpeggios, all combined to encapsulate that signature Yant sound.

Following a first iteration which set the tone for our newly-minted Heimat series in explosive fashion, here comes the much anticipated second batch of our zeitgeistian take on today’s scene’s, its current potential and destination. Showcasing productions from artists keen to roll up their sleeves and sail into the impassible status quo, this new number packs the kind of red-hot hammering and cutting-edge punch we’ve been so adamant to push and defend over the past decade.

Berlin-based French producer Arkan steps in first with a proper magnetic depth charge. Dwelling the darker layers of our ocean floor as its name suggests, ’Submarine’ is pure hypnotic material geared up for heavy-duty boogie in the warehouse. Filling its ballast tanks with a hefty deluge of muscular bass onslaughts, sonar-like bleeps and untamed cascades of loopy arps, this one rolls and pitches like a haunted ship on predator mode. Adding his dynamic pulse and mind-bending spin to the A-side, Frameworks & Untertwegs bossman Decka cuts a path of straight mental obliteration as he smashes the doors of the club wide open and parades all guns blazing with the unapologetic crusher that is ‘Circumvent’. A no-holds-barred workout for the strong stomachs, churning out fiery bars of kick-drum/squelchy bass contrast with in-your-face swagger.

Switching on to the flip side, there’s Manchester’s Yant cruising with the ebulliently dynamic (no shit, Sherlock) tune, ‘Moving’. A multidirectional concerto of pong-like modularity and racing synth arpeggios flying off like coloured bricks in a Tetris game gone absolute batshit. The kind of hi-intensity burner that’ll awaken any lukewarm mid-set flow with its bouncy unpredictability and ruthless forward-pushing thrust. Rounding it off on a further minimal note, Amsterdam up-and-comer Hitam treats us to an inch-perfectly engineered finale with a stripped-back - yet, absolutely not hollow - bomb, ‘Venusian Winds’. Gutsy that one sure is, with its metronomic step ticking at near-cyclonic speed and cleverly arranged, subtly FX-coated funk keeping things both suspenseful and focussed thru and thru. A sleek combo of pared-down brutalism and masterly executed analogue tailoring altogether.

All dressed in clear purple marbled wax for the occasion, "Heimat II" shall please both the techno purist and visual aesthete in you with its velvet touch and effortless chic.

Probably my deepest track yet titled ‘Polarity’ released as part of Inguma Records 5 Years VA. Available on limited cassette + digital on bandcamp + t-shirt merch.

It reflects heavily on today’s scenarios, polarising views, polarising emotions, uncertain futures, but there is a hint of hope still flickering in the darkness. Like the moment when light appears from behind a storm cloud.

I love the artwork for this, it reminds me to lean into the things that give us hope or keep us together. Even when there is a lot of evil.

SK_eleven celebrates a decade of sonic exploration with a 13-track compilation showcasing its signature tension, technical discipline, and stylistic spectrum. 

Reuniting a tight circle of artists whose contributions have helped shape the label, the release offers an unrelenting sequence of pressure, mental twists, and textural collisions; a multifaceted snapshot of techno’s enduring capacity to evolve, disturb, and seduce.


The compilation resists uniformity. Instead, it thrives on contrast: tension versus release, density against spaciousness, rhythm in all its permutations. From high-energy metallic openers and dub-inflected body rollers, to disorienting, delay-heavy experiments and stripped-back percussive tools, each contribution reveals a unique grip on groove and detail. Some tracks move like engineered machines: sharp, robotic, and syncopated to surgical precision. Others embrace sensuality and unpredictability, exploring spatial motion, layered harmonic friction, and states of controlled chaos.


Each piece acts as a structural component in a larger sonic architecture, where tension is built, collapsed, and rebuilt. Friction becomes a form of choreography. Across the record, a shifting palette of emotional mechanisms takes form; granular and magnetic, haunting and quietly forceful, restrained, then disruptive.


More than a retrospective,  SK_eleven’s first compilation becomes a collective gesture toward techno’s unresolved possibilities:  its ability to hold contradiction, remain in flux, and mutate without conclusion.

Jay Clarke’s London-based imprint BLACKAXON hosts Manchester artist Yant’s debut release featuring four dazzling cuts titled ‘Cosmic Borders’.

Reminiscent of Jay Clarke’s earlier releases on BLACKAXON and Klockworks, ‘Cosmic Borders’ displays Yant’s flair for stimulating techno at high-octane speeds. The lovely Orchid-AM asked some of their artists to contribute a track to help save our scene! Here's mine "Soup Kitchen" written in a day during lockdown I thought it would be a nice track to introduce myself to the agency, and one which I feel has a playful attitude, just like the club itself. One of the first clubs I came to in Manchester and still it has such a warm feeling and amazing family of people who work there. Soup Kitchen x

While scientists are working on finding a cure for the COVID-19 virus, we, humans, can only spread love and support each other. Orchid-AM can only spread love through music and by uniting artists and clubs that are kept apart from each other at these difficult times.

We have asked producers and musicians represented by the agency to come up with some new music in one week, and then name it after a club they hold close to their heart. We have packed it all in a nine-tracks compilation released digitally via Bandcamp, in hope for a return to normality soon.

All sales will be equally shared between artists and clubs."

Rising talent Yant delivers a quadruplet of aces for his second outing on Jay Clarke’s BLACKAXON imprint.

We got the first taste of Yant aka Andrew Tomlinson’s production prowess with the transcendent ‘Cosmic Borders’ EP in late 2018. Clarke had originally planned to keep Blackaxon purely as an outlet for his studio creations, but the quality of Yant’s work convinced him otherwise.

The Hydro EP is an iridescent expression of Yant’s musical sensibilities. ‘Hydro 1’ provides driving rhythms from the off, before a heady concoction of synths and a lead siren drive the production home. ‘Hydro 2’ is a dark pumper, reminiscent of earlier Blackaxon releases. It builds gradually, heavy on mood, before a propulsion of drums raises the energy to another level. A highlight of Clarke’s set going back months, ‘Hydro 3’ is a delicious synapse-searer, marked by swirling synths and Yant’s trademark groove. ‘Hydro 4’ is a textured, low-slung chugger, imbued with thrashing dancefloor attitude and a glint of euphoria.

With this EP I can hear his inspiration from the likes of DVS1, Luke Slater, and ø[Phase] in his productions, all while having his own spin.
