Call is a track that acknowledges the imperfections of the human condition and how we all react differently to emotionally challenging situations, oftentimes in ways that we’re not proud of. It looks at the reflections that inevitably occur after the situation has ended where we think about what could have gone differently and the impact that these reflections have on our day to day lives.

A dystopian electronic journey, ‘Trevor’ is cinematic in scope, seamlessly blending euphoric techno rhythms with cascading synth walls and screeching vocals. The track balances sonic tension with explosive energy, capturing YARD’s signature mix of post-punk rock and electronica. It grips listeners tight before erupting into an infectious, aggressive crescendo, solidifying their reputation as one of the most exhilarating live acts to emerge in the last 12 months.

Lyrically, ‘Trevor’ explores the concept of anthropomorphism—the human tendency to attribute emotions and meaning to inanimate objects.

YARD vocalist Emmet White shares; "I've a habit of naming inanimate objects that have played a significant role in my life. In this case 'Trevor' was the name of a bike that I had for years, which was passed down to me by my brother. Sadly, one night, it was stolen outside of work. The loss of Trevor hit me far harder than I had expected as it felt like I had lost a friend or a companion." 

As the first single from their highly anticipated upcoming EP, ‘Trevor’ marks a thrilling new chapter for YARD. Taking inspiration from sonic heavyweights like SUUNS, Death Grips, and Nine Inch Nails, the track showcases the band's relentless ambition and innovation, pushing their sound into even more expansive and electrifying territory.

As an instrumental track, ‘Slumber’ pulls no punches and proves that YARD can captivate audiences with or without lyricism. The track evokes an initial sense of confinement, tension, struggle and entrapment, themes that are regularly featured across YARD’s discography. 'Bend' truly encapsulates YARD’s unique sonic offering. It’s a track that radiates energy and aggression, blending heavy rock and grunge with distinctive electronic elements. The song opens with their signature blinding electronics, smashing drums, and powerful guitar riffs, all set against the bellowing vocals of Emmet White. The result is a piece of organised chaos that demands attention and leaves listeners clamouring to experience YARD live.

As the song progresses, it builds into a crescendo of electronica and post-punk energy, ending in an epic explosion that lingers long after the final note. Lead singer Emmet White explains, “When you are caught in cycles of ‘bending over backwards’ for people and find it hard to realign yourself. Overextending yourself into others' realities so much that you can’t find your own. Not recognising the contorted version of yourself that is left after accommodating the wants of many. Leaving you with physical reactions to this situation with tight, tense and involuntary body movements.”

Lyrically, ‘Essential Tremor’ explores health anxiety, hypochondria and the awkwardness of visiting medical facilities. With age comes health complications and is a facet of life that we all face. Medical procedures, surgeries and courses of medication all confront us with how our bodies change over time. It’s frightening and leaves us having to understand our new physical self. 

YARD vocalist Emmet White shares; “the song is a discussion about physical health and how mine has evolved as I’ve aged. A particular turning point was when I found out I had high blood pressure and an ‘Essential Tremor’ (a common movement disorder characterized by involuntary, rhythmic shaking, primarily in the hands and arms). These conditions stayed undiagnosed for the majority of my life. I suddenly had medical terminology for what I thought was normal and now my body felt unfamiliar. The song explores the conversations with my doctor, the panic upon receiving this news and getting used to the idea of taking medication everyday. At the end of the day I feel lucky for having received the diagnosis early and whilst I feel at a loss, I have a plan to deal with it all.”

Essential Tremor

Returning to Lawmaker has allowed further exploration of the song's themes and message. The song was a part of the early formation of YARD and played an essential role in the initial fabric of our sound. The song continues to explore the idea of incessant and insidious characters you encounter in life. People who are ‘self serving’ and lost in their own motives, preventing themselves from connecting to others or feeling a part of a group. Coming back to the song and with more years under my belt I’ve seen that people like this are usually lost in a system of their own making, feeling ‘incarcerated’ and trapped in a cycle they don’t know how to change. With that being said I think we can all relate to that in some shape or form. The song initially was about pushing against taxing people in your life, now it’s an attempt to find a better understanding.

Toxic behaviour, isolation and group rejection are engaged in this latest version of Lawmaker. Taking the role of a commentator on frustrating people we meet in our lives. A Lawmaker is someone who rejects those around them and is driven by self desire. This is a pattern of their own creation and something that is hard to break free from.

Lawmaker

Big Shoes addresses the concern that everyone will face in their lives; financial scarcity and the anxiety caused by that. Being from a generation that has seen multiple recessions and now the tokenisation of money (crypto, NFT’s etc.), feeling secure in your income feels all the more impossible. This environment  feels like a ‘stranglehold’ on your day to day and prospect of feeling comfortable in your earning an impossibility. Money isn’t everything and I believe that but when you are struggling financially it can feel like your whole world structure is collapsing around you. There is pressure to present yourself as fiscally secure, not acknowledging these issues to those around  you. A pattern of shame can emerge and can lead to rejection of it all and disengagement, being ‘Back in a moment’ but never fully returning.

Financial anxiety, uncertainty and hopelessness is what Big Shoes gravitates around. We are in a world of gate kept financial strategies and tokenisation of money. This leads you to feeling it’s impossible to get a strong foothold in your own monetary prospects. This overwhelming structure leads to rejection and refusal to engage with it all. The lack of financial education/literacy only compounds this belief that this is a world not built for you to understand.
