Gaza is the moral compass

Likulli Fadāin Eqāéh لكلّ فضاءٍ إيقاعه [to each space its own rhythm] 2019–23

a landscape of ever amusing contradictions on unstretched canvas: – of predictable rhythms (day and night, high tide and low tide, routine and intuition, rent and bureaucracy) and unpredictable rhythms (good fortune, bad poetry, chance, mistakes and chaos).

Berlin-based Syrian musician Khaled Kurbeh makes his @ResearchRecords debut with Likulli Fadāin Eqāéh, a tapestry of soundscapes written, performed and recorded across four years as part of his practice muhawalāt [attempts, variations] and hawāmesh [margins]: an outlet of gestures, sonic footnotes and observations from the everyday.

Kurbeh’s first release in seven years departs from his largely acoustic debut, Aphorisms, a collaboration with oud player Raman Khalaf and ensemble with elements of maqām and jazz.

Likulli Fadāin Eqāéh offers a collection of 10 electroacoustic compositions – they’re brooding and experimental with hints of musique concrète. The tracklist implies a mapping or an itinerary. Field recordings of swallows and the snapping and un-shelling of sunflower seeds on interlude Nuzha I [Excursion I] are countered by sparse composition of low-end synth, harmonium, upright piano and prepared fender rhodes played with mallets on Darb I–II [Path I–II]. Patterns of cymbals and agitated bells appear on Jauqét Ajrās [Choir of Bells], while currents of bowed strings shiver and stutter on al-Ajrāf [The Cliffs]. The release captures four years of overlapping sonic wanders, finely balancing tensions of harmony and dissonance, stillness and resonance, texture and rhythm – recorded inside and outside.

The gatefold vinyl features artworks by Ida Lawrence and includes a booklet of 10 painted variations of the one scene. On the outer cover, paths stretch under a dramatically accented and vivid sky; while inside, the same landscape appears over and over in another light.

Likulli Fadāin Eqāéh لكلّ فضاءٍ إيقاعه [to each space its own rhythm], is set for release on July 18th 2025 via Research Records, Naarm/Melbourne. A follow up solo piano album by Kurbeh, recorded in his studio in Kreuzberg, Berlin, will be released later this year.

Just 2 days ago I was sitting in a cafe during my recent trip for Lebanon and Egypt when Donald Trump announced his ban of muslim people visiting the USA marking another climax of xenophobia, anti muslim and anti Arabic narrative (الترجمة العربية أسفله).  At the same time I was in Cairo, a colorful, energetic and vital city that despite the cities and countries problems has not much in common with the stereotypical narrative of the Arabic world that is so largely told in the Western media. I’m aware that in times of these music is just a tiny piece of the puzzle to tell a different story but given that this is what I’m working with I felt it was the right time to drop another mix of music from Arabic tapes, vinyl and master tapes. Music that is very different to what a lot of people might expect. Straight up Chicago soul music with the „The Cats“, an Egyptian band covering „The Dells“, Lo-Fi electronic music from Sudan, tropical sounds from Cairo by "Al Massrieen", energetic disco from Algeria by „Zohra", another unknown banger by Morocco’s answer to James Brown „Fadoul“. Or what about some incredible AOR / yacht pop from Lebanon feat. Ziad Rahbani on keys with „Games“ and another little preview of our forthcoming „Ahmed Malek & Flako“ record among some other great music? Music that tells a different story, music to listen to when the world is going crazy and everything in between. #antitrumpmusic

قبل يومين، كنت جالسا في مقهى في القاهرة، حين أعلن دونالد ترامب منعه للمسلمين من زيارة الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، مظهرا بذلك مظهرا آخر من العنصرية ضد المسلمين و العرب. 
في نفس ذلك الوقت، أنا كنت في القاهرة، مدينة مفعمة بالطاقة و الألوان، هذه المدينة التي رغم المشاكل التي تحيط بها، لا تشبه أي من الصور النمطية الشائعة على الإعلام الغربي.
إنني مدرك أنه خضم هكذا أجواء، الموسيقى لا تشكل سوا جزء صغير من الأحجية، و بما أنه المجال الذي اشتغل فيه، أحسست أنه الوقت المناسب لإصدار ميكس جديد من الموسيقى العربية. موسيقى مختلفة عن ما قد يتوقعه الناس. موسيقى السول مع " The cats"، فرقة موسيقية تعيد غناء أغاني "The Dells"، " لوفي" موسيقى الكترونية من السودان، انغام استوائية من القاهرة مع " AlMasrieen"، موسيقى ديسكو جزائرية مع "Zohra"، و أغنية مجهولة لصاحبها، جايمس براون المغرب فضول.
هناك أيضا موسيقى رائعة من فرقة لبنانية اسمها "Games" عزف فيها زياد الرحباني على البيانو.

Oskar Schuster feat. Possimiste - Stjernen

Yasmine Hamdan first made waves in the music scene with the pioneering Beirut indie electronic duo Soapkills, which she co-founded with Zeid Hamdan in the late 1990s. 

Having moved to Paris in 2005, Yasmine collaborated with Madonna producer Mirwais for the Y.A.S. project, releasing the sleeky clubby Arabology album on Universal in 2009. Since then, she has earned international acclaim as a solo singer-songwriter and producer, elegantly entwining far-ranging elements, from pan-Arabic roots and pop and poetic lyrics, to electronica, soul and guitar melodies. Yasmine has collaborated with filmmakers such as Elia Suleiman, Jim Jarmusch, and has toured globally in support of her albums Ya Nass (2013) and Al Jamilat (2017). 

Her upcoming third album is scheduled for worldwide release in September 2025 on Crammed Discs/ [PIAS].
