Residing in Adelaide, Australia, Code618 is a veteran of all things electronic music, obsessive crate digger and curator of techno and house sounds for over 30 years.

After hearing sonic explorations from Detroit, Chicago and Europe over the crackle of late night radio in the early 90s his radar was locked. For this mix he has delved deep into the vinyl archives for a retro inspired set of 90’s classics and newer releases on a similar tip. 

Mixed 100% on vinyl via venerable Technics 1200’s and DJM-600 in between Code618 leverages experience DJing during the 90’s in the burgeoning Adelaide techno scene.  Expect sounds from Jeff Mills, Dave Clarke, Surgeon, DJ Rush, Ausgang, Frozen Border and Joey Beltram to name a few….

Birthed from the grit and grime of the mid-nineties Midwest rave scene. Born and currently residing in Akron, Ohio, USA. Inspired by the music and DJ’s coming out of Detroit, Chicago, New York, Berlin, the UK and the parties that were happening across the Midwestern United States during that magickal time. 1 Auxy began his obsession with record collecting and DJ’ing in 1995 in Akron and Cleveland. Warehouse parties and club nights. Late nights and early mornings. Techno, house music and the intersection where they meet. Raw, soulful, psychedelic. Mixing new and old. All for the love of the music. No bullshit. No gimmicks. 

"I really like this one. Starts off with ambient and more experimental jams, builds into a deep super heady techno set and ends with some dub techno from Maurizio and a house cut from Cassy. Really nice flow to it. Kind of like condensing a party into an hour and a half".

Yax Invites #051 - 1 auxy

My next guest on Yax Invites is Adelaide techno veteran, Ben Alibi, who has kindly prepared an interesting write up to support his mix for the series below.

Good records offer an insight into another existence - be it here on Earth, or the far flung reaches of our imaginations. Speaking personally, the valuable ones are usually something I continue to find something new in and are as appreciated being played right through, or mixed as a portion in a set. 

When DJing, I feel the focus should be on the music itself; I've only ever used two sources at once and I like to believe that in some ways there's fewer places to hide when it's just you and two tracks. Knowing how to juggle three (or more) decks well would be awesome though! 

I always go back to hearing Jeff Mills play over two nights, during the mid 90's. Night one was his 3-turntable power mix - which was amazing to watch first-hand! However, night two was performed on two decks only, whereby it felt to me like the level of intensity and audience involvement was counter-intuitively higher. Furthermore, it seemed like the track selection went deeper and everything being aired reached its full potential. 

As such, I believe a DJ's role is simply to work productions together, so as to best highlight the standout parts of each track simultaneously - anything more, or less, only detracts from what should be at the core of it all; individual human expression, through techno music. 

This mix has plenty of personal old favourites - tracks that we (my generation) would associate with a night out in Adelaide during the early 90's. I'm old enough to remember this period fondly and with good reason as Adelaide, South Australia truly was the underground techno capital (outpost) of Australia - if not the southern hemisphere - primarily due to being the base for the formative label, Juice Records. 

The current generation of contributors should certainly feel proud of our foundations, but crucially, remember that so much has changed. We're totally just a grain of sand on a beach now, but something big has been achieved here before, so it's certainly possible again.
 
From my perspective, if there's one thing to take from our history here, it's that we be totally confident in our unique way of doing things as that's core to our sustainability; moreover, it's what someone on the receiving end 'buys into'. 

Again, with the sentimentality... but buying records back in the day was like being a tourist - you were taking a ride on someone else's reality. Every point in the globe, every scene within a point, had its own sound and this was a big part of the attraction that techno music originally held. In essence, I wish to continue being part of the movement that (re)focuses on sounding like Adelaide, for us to then communicate outwardly with. 

I love what we had, but I love where we might go next, even more. 

I hope that you enjoy listening to this selection as much as I did laying it down. N.B. keep an ear out for the new (and some unreleased) music within from DMZ and Antony Coppens, on Juice Records.

Yax Invites #057 - Ben Alibi

First released as part the EPM20 compilation from @epm-music, 'Beyond The Reach Of Time' was a track unearthed by British techno icon Karl O'Connor AKA Regis from the archives, showing an introspective, more emotional side to the producer and @downwards label head that had otherwise “been buried in the mists of time.” 

For his take, @shedofficial pulls 'Beyond The Reach Of Time' into tribal territory, deepening the track’s percussive elements with robust drums and shimmering hi-hats. The result is hypnotic and propulsive, while honouring the emotional integrity that forms the soul of Regis’s original.

Paisley born Lee Cee (Lee Clark) has been collecting and playing vinyl since 1997 at the age of 15. Lee has been a resident DJ at Club 69, Paisley for various nights since 2002 and has shared the booth with the likes of acid legend DJ Pierre (Trax Records/Strictly Rhythm) and internationally renowned DJ and producer, Nightwave. She has also played at outdoor parties/raves throughout Scotland. Lee has been resident for Tech-Know Radio since 2019 (Groove City Radio)and for Golden Days in Glasgow.

Lee's sets are notorious for her eclectic taste in genres which can vary from Electro, Acid and Techno also with the some Funk/Break Beat/Hip-Hop reflecting her true passion for music.

Third part of the live A/V series that took place in Vienna from September - November, 2022. On display of the group exhibition was the complex interplay of analog and digital work approaches to live audio, live video, sound installations, fine arts and luminograms. A reflexion of different perspectives. 

The studio room hosted installations by Markus Guschelbauer and Catharina Bond, as well as luminograms and photographies by Mahir Jahmal and Annika Hippler. 

The 7h live A/V performance in cooperation with @4youreye Projection Art took place in the basement of the venue.

Andrea Vurchio aka AV TEKNE is a 48 years old dj/vinyl collector/
producer who lives in Italy.
He started out as a dj in the early 90's during the Techno world-wide diffusion an took immediately interest in the harder and pounding techno vinyls sector.
Many are the consoles he played at since then, setting his hearth and his gear mostly on "underground/illegal"
He's also a co-founder member of TekneRec (IT-UK), where he
produces techno tracks along with techno podcast/set, using either analog and digital equipment, and also Superdrive Records (IT)
