A lil break in the pod series leads us to New York based duo Ma Sha Ru, stepping up for number 49. They've taken no prisoners with this 1, 50 minutes of heavy bass beltas. Sorta tunes that make you crave to wanna hear em on a system.  Big ups to them, a real corka of a mix :) 

We also caught up with em for a lil chat, read below! >

AM: What have you been doing recently? 

Setting up a new studio! haha We've been travelling to a few places last year to be together since COVID travel restrictions made things different. It feels nice to be finally back in NYC and have a proper set up. We also just released a new split EP with Ayesha on Kindergarten Records and a track on Pressure Dome compilation. Overall, we've been working on finishing more projects to come later in the year + preparing a new live set. Very busy and very much enjoying this! :)


AM: Your recent track for Pressure Dome as great, what’s the process behind your production? 

The process behind this track was actually atypical. The lyrics were written during our lockdown time in Minsk, Belarus. We talk about our willingness not to conform to rules that society puts on you and how to find a way to stay out of these limitations. The beat of the track was made during a short stay on an island in Italy during last Spring and deeply inspired by the freedom of the surroundings. There are water field recordings at the beginning of the track that were made on the spot. In this case we didn't have our machines with us since we were not in our studio, so everything was made in the box. Usually we involve the use of MPC 3000 and Bass Station II on our productions. 


AM: Where & how did you record the mix? Was there a theme for it as such? 

We recorded it in our apartment in Queens, NY. We recently moved a DJ booth to the living room, bought some big plants and set up neon color lights, so the vibes were just right! The set up is two XDJs 700, Pioneer DJM 600, a pair of KRK monitors. It's actually mad hot in NYC now, so we had a constant sound of the old AC working behind our backs but we think we still made it no matter how loud it was haha The idea behind the mix was to play some new stuff we got during this month and a few forthcoming bits from our friends. So happy to see everybody doing their thing - big up to our friends killing it with the tunes and labels!


AM: What have ya been listening to and digging recently?

Really enjoying the projects of our Kindergarten crew - Ayesha, Despina, Drummy, Stolen Velour and Ziyiz got something very hot in the works/forthcoming! We also just got back from a trip to Mexico CIty and felt very inspired by the Infinite Machine team and El Irreal Veintiuno productions. Of course, always big up to Sorry Records, Pressure Dome and Shubzin!

AM: Whats next for ya in 2021?

We have 2 EPs planned for the rest of the year/early 2022 and 4 compilations so far :) Going to start working on a new live set soon too, so we are looking forward to the future!

Violet co-hosts a weekly Techno night at JADE bar called Tech & Tonics (IG: @techtonicbk). This series highlights new and established talent in the techno/dance music scene. In response to the Omicron-driven COVID wave, Violet launched the Queer Nightlife Fund that provided grants to 48 NYC Nightlife workers who lost work/gigs.

Beyond the DJ booth, you can find them producing events for leading electronic music events in NYC.

We gathered Lostsoundbytes, Gil.Barte, NVST & Warzou, for two hours of ambient show on Station Station Radio, to celebrate last Big Science release.
Divided into 30-minute sessions, the show opens with an original creation by Warzou, based on a writing task, generated from AI and open-source applications. It will precede NVST and its famous selection of new releases, between drone and field recording. Lostsoundbytes attacks the second hour with his "behind the scene", this sound set emanating from his latest research. To conclude, Gil.Barte shares with us his experimentations, inspired by his last live performances and research works.  Special thanks to Station Station & La Station Gare des Mines. Enjoyyyyy.

Itako se promène main dans la main avec le spectre audible de la musique des quarante dernières années : 
Il accorde dans ses sets beaucoup de place aux tempos laissé pour compte, avec des préférences marquées pour la musique industrielle belge, la culture disco-edit, les oubliés de la trance et du downtempo des années 2000 ou encore la bass anglaise … Un juste (?) milieux entre musique super-compressé et son opposé.
Sur un autre versant il a produit plusieurs EP et à participé à différentes VA au cours des 3 dernières années.  Tendance acid, EBM, techno ou electro avec un stop à l’arrêt marqué, contrôle à droite et à gauche, cet été avec un album sur le label de Adam X : Sonic Groove.

Zohar is an Amsterdam based DJ. Last year she dropped her debut EP on her own ‘Zohar’ label. A bunch of pretty haunting distorted tracks that gained our interest. She’s working on a follow-up and you can catch her at Dekmantel festival and Selectors this year, among other great things to come. This 50 min mix is very exciting - there happens a lot in mood, rhythmic variation, and energies. All of it seems to shape around a strong redline of melancholic bass and drum driving tracks

Knekelhuis # 59 - Zohar

NTS/Mutualism resident @clemencydj brings us a phenomenal 2 hour mix that explores all areas of the textural and murky, all whilst steering clear of inserting any overt instruction for the listener. Subjective, dark, with plenty of beauty sprinkled in - this is one to listen to start to finish.
