"The Shadow” represents the duality of light and darkness; although your shadow is always tethered to yourself, its darkness can only be seen in the presence of light.

A couple weeks ago, I was watching the movie “Shadow” by Zhang Yimou. It’s a Chinese martial arts film with tons of black and white imagery and very intense symbolism. The exploration of themes such as Light vs Darkness, Reality vs Fiction, Self vs Shadow really inspired to make some music. These themes particularly resonated with me because they are self-evident in the nøll branding and story. This was also a chance to delve deep on organic Asian sound design. The film soundtrack uses primarily the zither (Chinese harp), erhu (Chinese violin), and dizi (Chinese flute). I decided to design the track around this sound palate, but still keeping true to a modern trap sound. In the artwork and animation, I wanted to reflect duality in the symbolism of the track. The figure in the image may seem harmless, but her shadow is not always as it seems…..
