Hear the whoosh of grass and crunch of snow underfoot, the addition of our favourite animal companions, and the beginnings of Fort Edmonton. One iconic sound you'll certainly notice is the rattling and squeaking of a Red River Cart, a invention by Metis people in the Red River area (hence the name!)

Since Time Immemorial to the Fort | Hearing Edmonton In Motion

Hop back in time with us and experience how people got around in the place we now call Edmonton! Hearing Edmonton in Motion is all about the history and evolution of transportation centered around today's Churchill Square. The Boomtown Days of Edmonton transitions from horse-powered vehicles to planes, trains, and automobiles. A mere Fort no more, Edmonton grew exponentially during the early years of the 20th century, and with that brought a host of new ways to transport people around the brand new city.

Hop back in time with us and experience how people got around in the place we now call Edmonton! Hearing Edmonton in Motion is all about the history and evolution of transportation centered around today's Churchill Square. Journey into Modernity traces the rapid growth and expansion of Edmonton's city, population, and transit system. We're a long way from only having one Ford Model A chugging through the town's unpaved streets! Now with modern cars, diesel, hybrid, and fully electric buses, LRT system, and more, everyone can get from place to place with ease.

Meet Jay Gilday: musician, postal worker, and host of Clock In. Delivering mail in Edmonton has always felt meaningful for Jay. Imagine his surprise when he found out his grandfather did the same work in the Northwest Territories – by dogsled.

In this first episode of Clock In, follow Jay to the picket line to learn why he and his fellow workers decided to put it all on the line by going on strike. Then hear him sing at open mic night at River City Revival – including a song he wrote to honour his connection to his grandfather, “Shoes.”

What parts of ourselves do we bring to our jobs? How much does our work define us? This episode is the start of a journey to understand how Edmontonians’ work and family lives shape each other, and the world around us.

Shima Robinson has always admired her mom. Shima served as Edmonton’s 10th Poet Laureate, and performs spoken word poetry under the name Dwennimmen. Her mom, Elsa Robinson, is an accomplished visual artist and former teacher.

Shima finds Elsa such a stalwart and reliable human being. Given how hard it can be to be a parent and make a living as an artist, Shima’s always wondered: How has Elsa pulled it off? And how have Elsa’s jobs and art informed each other?

In this episode, Clock In host Jay Gilday helps Shima ask her mom, and finds the admiration runs both ways.

As oil sands mining ramped up, he moved to Edmonton and travelled back and forth to work at Syncrude and Suncor. Along the way, he tried to make sure other Indigenous workers were treated fairly. On this episode of Clock In, host Jay Gilday speaks with Stephanie and Henry about how he made the most of tough situations, why their family moved to Edmonton, and what Stephanie admires most about her dad to this day.
