Burning Bridges

Drums, bass and saxophone unite to create a deadly groove on "Find Joy", the lead track from ‘Rising’, the forthcoming EP from multi-dimensional future-jazz outfit JK Group, on La Sape Records.

JK Group is the brainchild of award-winning saxophonist, Joshua Kelly (30/70 collective, PBS Young Elder of Jazz 2019). ‘Rising’ sees the band return to La Sape to follow up ‘What’s Real?’
 their universally applauded and long sold-out 2021 release.

Where ‘What’s Real?’ served as a platform for wild experimentation, ‘Rising’ returns to a more considered and familiar format for the band, offering up 4 cohesive tracks that are deep in conception and expression, at once original and fresh. Conceived after recording an as yet unreleased body of work written whilst undergoing chemotherapy, ‘Rising’ celebrates bandleader Josh’s survival and eventual recovery from the intense treatment he received for lymphoma in 2020.

The band stays true to their honed format of jazz traditions melding with influences from electronica and beyond. Like the first release, 'The Young Ones', 'Rising' sits comfortably in the crossover of raw, live jazz and electronic dance music, whilst also throwing an unexpected curveball to the listener expanding the palate of the bands sound to a pigment never before heard in their music. The EP takes you on an emotional journey throughout the four tracks, best listened to start-to-finish.

Exclusive Premiere: JK Group "Find Joy" (La Sape Records)

I recently graduated from the  SEMA Music Production course by Santuri East Africa. Sketching Sounds is a complication of 2 sketches I produced, wrote, mixed, and mastered for the course's final project.

The process behind the tracks:

1) To The Sun -
For the course final project, 1 of 2 assignments entailed producing a sketch in a genre we are not too fond of, familiar with nor inclined to produce/perform. The genre I selected for this sketch was a deep house.

2)Take The Moment -

The other final project assignment required a sketch that incorporated culture and experimentation. From this sketch, I drew from sampling culture as a basis for creating the sketch's foundation and shaping a unique narrative which I did so by repurposing my own vocals from past unreleased projects, ambient soundscapes, and punchy drum and skit samples from some of my favorite artists (sampled in this sketch are Feel by Jacob Colier and Lianne La Havas, and Rafael's prayer by Sault).

For experimentation, my process of composition was guided by the approach of "a piacere" which is an Italian musical phrase meaning “to your pleasure/at will.” - a philosophy on musical expression where some aspects of a song – such as tempo or dynamics do not need the performer to follow the rhythm strictly. With this approach, in class, we were challenged to create a sketch without a metronome. To work around this limitation I began the track with a sample of a simple yet strong drum loop which I used to hold count and establish a starting pulse for the sketch.

Finally returning to HQ after a gruelling ‘Tayi Bebba’ global tour Clap! Clap! is back on deck with more polyrhythms to smash the club. ‘Camo’ jumps off with Cris’ quickstep bare-footwork and global sound harvest. On the flip is ‘Fever’ another percussive kick drum stormer with a pinch of 80’s electro-boogie in the pot.

Madison McFerrin – Learn Your Lesson (ANDYS Remix)

Raúl Monsalve y los Forajidos find common threads between funk, Afrobeat and traditional Afro-Venezuelan music on “Bocón”. Lauded Family Atlantica frontwoman, Luzmira Zerpa, guests on lead vocals, transforming a traditional song from the coastal region of Barlovento about liars, big mouths, or “bocones” into a diatribe against national and world leaders with a dangerously loose grip on reality, “Bocón” makes it clear there’s no hiding from either the truth, or los Forajidos. As they hammer the ground with bamboo tubes, layering the horns and low-end synth bass with the powerful polyrhythmic quitiplás percussion native to Venezuela.
