This piece uses fragments of text from a guide on how to beat the point- and-click video game "Eric the Unready". The walkthrough assumes that you've tried to play the game before, so it doesn't bother providing context for its directions. The result is a series of directions that are strange and absurdist; creating a narrative that is semi-followable but deeply meaningless.

This piece is about fragmentation. The poem is taken from Dickinson's collection of "envelope poems" which were literally scrawled in dull pencil on various scraps of papers and envelopes. Like most of her work, these poems did not see the light of day until after her death. The brief interjection comes from what began as my attempt at 'modernizing' the language of the poem, only retroactively realizing a) how pointless that is and b) how intensely I had projected my own immediate reality into this 'translation.'

The inspiration comes from reading academic papers, grappling with their meaning, feeling a bit frustrated, and ultimately playing with the sound of words.

"Composition puts together elements from the input spaces to create new entities in the blended space, yielding flowers that can gaze and empathize. Completion extends the image suggested by the original mapping, drawing on our background knowledge of the circumstances summoned by the CIN. For instance, we know that flowers deprived of nourishment will soon die; thus, the flowers that will be laid with the miller in his grave will almost certainly be dead flowers. Because these are anthropomorphic flowers, we can also imagine that the nourishment they require is not water (even in the form of bitter tears), but evidence of true love." NYC-based Sam Pluta is perhaps best known for his use of electronics in his instrumental music, but for his commission for us, “binary/momentary logics: flow state/joy state,” the composer goes acoustic while preserving elements of technologically-modified sounds. A perfect send-off for the close of the season, Pluta refers to this super-charged work as “pretty much full-on the whole time,” and you all are in for one wild romp.
