machìna’s 3rd full release is an exploration of finding direction and finding solitude. The album was inspired by an emotional investigation into the notion of oneself. During times when the whole world is looking in on itself, music needs to provide a response. 

All sketches and initial recordings for the album were created in a small secluded hut at the foot of Mt. Shirouma, 2000m above the sea. In finding physical and social isolation, music could stand still and begin to respond to itself. This idea of internalization sounds bouncing off mirrors back into themselves, new points started to form along a new axis, a compass that new from within to point out.

모듈러는 일종의 커스텀이다. 신디사이저를 구성하는 여러 모듈들을 취향대로 따로 구입해 조립한 나만의 신디사이저다. 하는 목적 자체가 기성품의 전형성에서 벗어나는 것이기 때문에 이 계열 뮤지션들은 평범함에서 벗어나려는 성향이 강하다. 노브를 돌리다 우연히 찾아낸 소리나 예측을 벗어나는 랜덤 신호를 즐겨 쓴다. 모듈러를 메인 악기로 사용하는 마키나 역시 그들과 닮아 실험적 음악을 들려준다. 테크노의 비트를 공유하지만 클럽보다는 주술 의식에 어울려 보이는 이 트랙에서 확립된 장르적 전형을 거부하는 마키나의 음악적 특징을 엿볼 수 있다. 파열음에 가깝게 찌그러진 전자음에서도 그녀가 선호하는 사운드가 일반적인 신스 팝과 다름을 알 수 있다. - 이대화 (온스테이지 기획위원)

모듈러는 직접 다뤄본 사람이 아니면 그 조작을 눈으로 보고 이해하기 어렵다. 그러나 마이크 앞에서 노래하는 행위는 누구나 쉽게 몰입감 있게 지켜볼 수 있다. 마키나는 본명 김여희라는 싱어송라이터로 활동한 경력을 살려 직접 노래까지 한다. 모듈러 신스를 메인으로 사용하는 전자음악가들 중에서 극히 드문 케이스다. 노래를 하면 사운드뿐만 아니라 가사로도 자신을 표현할 수 있다. 대중성과 스타성 측면에서도 유리하다. 마키나가 다른 모듈러 아티스트들에 비해 좀 더 많은 관심을 받는 이유 중 하나다. - 이대화 (온스테이지 기획위원)

live set at RSO.BERLIN | VERTX | September 13th 2025.

'𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣' is a series of dance tracks released periodically throughout 2023. The series is inspired by the defining harmony of rhythm and sound. The abstraction of simple techno beats and the processed overlaying of musical percussions is at the core of this exploration into the depth and complexity of techno. each track is composed in a simplified way, with a limited set-up of just one drum machine and the artist's own voice. The live show is pared back, with the intention of being able to play in a variety of venues and with an affordance that allows the music to be tweaked on stage for the occasion.

machìna - Action live at RSO.BERLIN, 13.09.2025

archipelago represents a new direction in machìna's musical story. These 10 tracks are a transition that is influenced by the artist's switch to a more analogue based set-up, with the modular system forming the basis for a new harmony between vocals and electronic sound. Although it is by no means the finished article, archipelago has been a process, a platform to express the new sounds, textures and emotions of machìna. 

The title 'archipelago' references the idea that each song can exist independent of the whole, but it is something invisible that ties the album together. The concept of each song formed through abstract investigations of ordinary words, and objects. ‘neon' takes neon lights and looks into the fragility of aesthetic beauty. ‘315 Heda' was inspired by a tired old fishing village in Izu, and delves into the irrelevance of history in the now. 'Past' is simply about the memories of a past holiday, and uses field recordings to express the loneliness felt in the streets of Paris. Each song is conceptually autonomous, yet through machìna's visceral vocals and resonating melodies each isolated track comes together to form a whole.

Recently I had an opportunity to play and tweak with YAMAWA machines and sample sounds created and recorded by SOUNDS GOOD. when I first had a listen to their library I was really attracted to the rhythm and the rawness that the machines make. So I started by stretching out some random sounds and then created new perceptions of the same sounds through chopping. so in the track all the perceived sounds and background noise is from the YAMAWA sample. Aside from the kick and the hi hat(blended) clap from my drum machine. also I tried to feed in to my tape modules, so I could use Micro-sound to create a unique texture and warm noise. the main picking staccato sound was taken from the micro tweaked sounds of the modules as well. so, who are you when no one's watching?

「uptoyou」という新しいシングルをリリースさせていただきます。 最近、YAWAWAのマシンで演奏したり、微調整したり、SOUNDS GOOD®で作成および録音したサンプルサウンドを聴く機会がありました。 彼らのライブラリを初めて聴いたとき、私はマシンが生み出すリズムと生々しさに本当に惹かれました。 だから私はいくつかの音をランダムに伸ばすことから始めて、それからチョッピングを通して同じ音の新しい知覚を作り出しました。 そのため、トラックでは、知覚されるすべてのサウンドとバックグラウンドノイズはキックとドラムマシンのハイハット（ブレンド）を除いてYAMAWAサンプルからのものです。また、テープモジュールにフィードしたので、マイクロサウンドを使用して、独特のテクスチャーと暖かいノイズを作成できました。 主なピッキングスタッカートサウンドは、モジュールの微調整されたサウンドからも取得されました。
