ZX81 is a British monochrome computer as big as an adult man's hand-palm. It has touch-sense keyboard and 1Kb of RAM only and it's been released in 1981 (American version is Timex 1000 and Timex 1500). 
It had a modular construction, so people weren't forced to buy all the hardware in one machine, if they didn't need it. So - if anybody required additional RAM, he could buy 16Kb RamPack or more. 
If somebody needed sound - he was able to buy a ZonX sound-module (with YM/AY chip inside). 

Finally we decided it's not enough for us. ;) ;) ZonXes are still being produced by various guys. And now - one machine is interesting for our porpose: Mr-X, because it is a through-out device - more interfaces can be connected to it. So - we decided to connect two sound-modules to ZX81 (one of them is on different ports than another) to obtain 6 channels of sound. 
And... IT'S ALIVE!!!!!! ;) Yes - You can here listen to  6-channels music composed on real ZX81 32Kb with two YM/AY interfaces (ZXpand-AY and Mr-X). Also I recorded the music from real ZX81 hardware. 

To compose the songs I used Andy Rea's "ZX81 SoundTracker" (first I made one half of every song, then the second one, because the SoundTracker for ZX81 can support only one AY chip - 3 channels). 
Then I recorded them from the same ZX81 with ZXpand-AY and Mr-X modules (using TurboSound Player).

This is kind of micromusic I made in MIDI standard, using two machines from 80s: 

- a sound-module Roland MT-32 (8 channels + drums) - 1987
- ATARI 520ST (with Cubase 2.1 as the sequencer) - 1985

I don't have many opportunities to play live some improvisations when I use trackers, so this time - with MIDI - it was kind of fun. :)

Also I think people tend to forget the MIDI is Atari's power, so I just wanted to remind it. ;)

Anyway, this song has been made on a pure ATARI TT, a machine released in 1990, with 4Mb of RAM, 8-bit sound quality, with 2 hardware digi-channels only.
The trick is - HexTracker gives 16 channels, using the Atari's 32Mhz Motorola CPU.
(Can make more but with a substantial sound quality reduction).

This song is a MOD format and has all its limitations (8 bit samples, only 64Kb for a sample, only 31 samples in the module, octaves limitation) but the only difference - are those 16 channels in the MOD (software mixing).

Music entirely made with Raspberry Pi 2, a British microcomputer, where the "micro" word is very well-used, as we're talkin' here about a tiny black box. :)
The song has been recorded directly from the machine.
26 channels have been used.

The R_Pi2's sound is being generated by the Broadcom BCM2836 chip, so it's resolved somewhat like in ZX Spectrum 48K, hehehe: the sound is being generated by the CPU.

It plays music with 11 bit quality. It's not an actual DAC, it is a digital PWM module (gives a 'pulse width modulated' signal) working with frequency around 40MHz and it is low-pass-filtered.

Like I used to say, the original Pi sound is warm'n'soft; doesn't remind thousands of razors on PC.

I've just finished a small test of Amiga1200 working with MIDI. 
Hardware: Yamaha QY70 + Amiga 1200 (MIDI).
Software: OctaMED 4.00.

Amiga 1200 - a computer launched in 1992. 14Mhz of Motorola CPU on-board. Mine has 10Mb of RAM. The song surely would work on standard 2Mb, without problems. 

Yamaha QY70 has been released in 1997. It's a very small synthesizer with sequencer (but can also work in MIDI mode), similar in its look to Atari Lynx handheld game-console. 
Sound generation method: AWM2.

OctaMED 4.00 - the series generally has been closed in 1992 (later the program became freeware). 
You can use 16 channels here, in the MIDI mode, however it still works as a tracker, so - for example - You cannot put a chord into one channel: You have to use 3 separate channels to make the chord.

A 'funk' chiptune with a slow intro. Made in 2016. ZX Spectrum 48K with AY-interface was my instrument here. 
Some complex synthesis has been used to avoid the usual boring square-wave of AY. The problem with those advanced synths is - literally all notes have to be tuned manually to a proper key/pitch. So You can imagine it's kind of tedious. ;)

Well, theoretically ZX Spectrum (and other computers with AY chip inside) have no sampler - only a digital synthesizer. 
But when the AY is being linked to any CPU chip (Z80 in my case) - it can actually be used as a sampler too. 
With the Z80 power, ZX Spectrum 48K can play 3 channels of digital music through the AY-interface, with 4-bit quality  (btw, it can do it via ULA too, but in 1-bit quality). The SampleTracker software has no volume commands, so - to achieve delays  :) - I have to make the same sample twice: the louder one, and the more silent one, heheh. That takes RAM away, of course, which is crap because I have only 48K of RAM on ZX Spectrum ;) (even less, actually, hehhe).

Yerzmyey - Agartha

It's a J-POP chiptune I made in 2014 - it is a cover of the main-title music from Sailor Moon Stars anime TV-series. :) 

I prepared it especially for my concert in Tokyo/Japan, in 2014 (the Square Sounds Tokyo chiptune festival). 

This particular song has been designed for a ZX Spectrum with TurboSound interface (2 x AY chip = 6 channels). 

As I use only the standard ZX SoundTracker 1.1 editor (the oldest tracker for Spectrum, released in 1991 or 1992) - and it uses only 3 channels - I had to make _separately_ two "halves" of the song :) NOT hearing them both at once, hehehe. I had to... 'imagine' one while making another. :)

Only when I finished the song, I merged both the halves together and then I was able to play entire song (and record) from my Speccy2010 comp - and it was the first time I actually heard my tune, hehehe. 

Anyway, it took me something like a month (or more) to make the cover: I love the song but it isn't the easiest to do. ;)

Yerzmyey - Yerzmix part 5

Hi. It's a 6-channels song for one SID chip (6581). 
Composed in 2019 on The C64 Mini and recorded from it. 

The song is kind of a test I made to check out two things: 
- is the Polyanna tracker for C64 any good? Yes. It can play 8 channels or 6 channels on one SID chip, on a regular Commodore 64 (the old SID is required). 
- is The C64 Mini computer any good? Yes. Most of the stuff - including sound - works much better that I expected. 

As for the Polyanna tracker by Aleksi Eeben - here are a few words from the programmer: 

"
Polyanna is a 8-channel music editor for Commodore 64. It plays 3 regular SID channels together with 5 emulated SID channels on a stock machine. Old SID chip (6581) is required. The mixer is based on Sid Vicious, a SID emulator I wrote for VIC 20 in 2006. For optimal performance the emulated channels in Polyanna are optimized for pulse waveform only. Pulse width
modulation and envelopes are of course supported, although they're rough. Don't expect too much! :) There is also an optional 6-channel mode with improved sound quality:
- 8 channels: 3 regular SID + 5 emulated channels @4.4kHz
- 6 channels: 3 regular SID + 3 emulated channels @7.7kHz
"

As for The C64 Mini, I like the machine; it's good for games; it's also kind of good for making stuff: although the disk-drive speed is more/less the same like on the original C64 (You can speed it up a bit but sometimes it may cause problems with loading, so anyway I use the standard floppy speed only) - however here You have also 4 slots for snapshots, for each diskette. Instant saving / loading the song while composing is a very nice & useful feature. Really comfortable. When You finished composing - You can normally save the final song into the diskette (the *.d64 file) and move it anywhere - into an emulator, into a real diskdrive and the original C64 - and so on. 

So anyway - some more 'crunchy' sound sometimes - isn't any faulty procedure of the C64 Mini SID - Aleksi says it sounds the same way on the original C64 (and it doesn't work at all on the C64 with a new SID, we checked it out already). 
Also - it might sound even better but I made the song in a wrong way - being corrected by Aleksi too late :) - he said that it's more reasonable to use low sounds on the emulated channels and high pitch sounds on the hardware channels. Which I might figure out by myself if I only took this effort to read the instruction, haha (the "7.7kHz" fragment might give me a clue ;-) ). 

You can notice the problems with keepin' tempo too, hehe. But this sound-engine is really a killer for the Commodore, hehe. The computer does what it can. 

I dedicated this song to my Kate because she is a mathematician by penchant - and a programmer by profession, so she can appreciate how tired the 986 Hz processor is, playing this stuff (yes, I use PAL). :-P
Also, she likes 80s style of music. :-)

Yerzmyey - Arcane Zone (Part 2)

ZX Spectrum 48K has 1-bit sound by default, but one can also connect an AY-interface to the machine (existing since its very beginning in 1982 and even earlier because first AY-interfaces have been built for ZX81 computer - 1981).

Anyway - then Spectrum48 has the same sound-abilities what Spectrum128, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST or MSX have (they use the same chip standard: AY/YM). It means 4-bit sound, 3 channels + white noise generator, square wave and several 'buzzers'. Or - instead of it - I can use 3 channels of 4-bit digital sound with the AY, but then I have to fit all samples in 48Kb of RAM. :)

In case of chip-music, as "standard capabilities" I understand AY/YM working in 50hz (Atari ST can use this chip with 200hz of speed which gives the Atarians better audio effects due to their more powerful CPU - 16-bit, 8MHz. Cry cry!!).
So that's my weapon of choice: ZX Spectrum 48K with AY-interface. 

For making chiptunes I use ZX Spectrum's Sound-Tracker 1.1 and for digital MOD-like music I use SampleTracker 2.0 and 2.1.

In 1994 I started to make music also for Amiga 500 (MOD / MED files) on OctaMED, but they were 4 channels traxx mostly - in 99%. :) We made only several 8 channels tracks on OctaMED but it was pretty hard task for old good A500, so usually I stick with 4ch. :)

In 2002 I founded AY-RIDERS band. We play chiptunes on our Spectrums (48K, 128K and higher models). AY-RIDERS' music can be found here: http://ay-riders.speccy.cz/ (My own music You can find here: http://yerzmyey.i-demo.pl/ ).

Some time later I started to make more music for Atari ST and STe (mostly digital, but also some chiptunes).
That's how the YM-DIGITAL band appeared in 2010: http://ym-digital.i-demo.pl/ - there are 2 albums for all enthusiasts of ym2149 chip and digital oldschool music.

In 2012 I bought an Amiga 1200 and was able to start making full 8-channels digital songs for the platform (with independent volumes). That's how the "RetroBeat" album appeared, for all fans of Amiga, and also for fans of retro-computer-music.

From time to time I make songs for Atari Falcon 030 (10 channels of digital music, on DHS-Tracker). 

In 2015 I bought a British microcomputer Raspberry Pi 2 (smaller than the human hand-palm :) ), and I make some music on it, too. 

So, in short, my software/hardware usually are:
