'Funky Pete (You Ain't Pete) 2.0' is another update from the original 'Dadbod' series where the focus was classic rock and soul samples that I remembered from my Uncles' record collections. 'Frampton Comes Alive' was inescapable the year it came out. The record was EVERYWHERE. I think it may have been the first 'live' album I'd ever heard. 

I don't see people speak too highly of it these days, but I still believe the album holds up. With  that offered, I present to you my take on one of my favorite songs from the double-album. 

I feel good...and I hope you feel like I do.

'Bigger Than You (A Living Love) 2.7' - I have loved the source for this tune from the first time I heard it. 'Bigger Than You' is another track in the 'DADBOD' series where I reshape and remix songs I remember hearing with my Uncles when I was a child. 

My Uncles had eclectic taste. One day, I would visit their room and they're listening to Parliament-Funkadelic, the next they're listening to Led Zeppelin and an hour after that, my Uncle Tim is playing Miles Davis records for me and teaching me the presidents of African nations. Needless to say, their influence on me and my tastes has been most appreciated...and I believe, evident. 

Sometimes, it presented minor issues; I vividly recall my good friend, Corey Miller (RIP. I love you, Corey), making fun of me cuz I was listening to Led Zeppelin's 'You Shook Me' when 'The Jam' was P-Funk's 'One Nation Under A Groove'. He did that damn 'AHHHH MY LOVE" scream Plant does in the breakdown for damn near a whole summer. Got on my nerves, but it was genuine good fun. I laughed then and I' laughing now! I always enjoyed playing my records for my friends, even when I was at risk for being the weird kid who listened to Thelonius Monk or Todd Rundgren. 

My Uncle Bebe told me a story of when I was a very little boy,  maybe three years old. I guess he addressed me by my name, Russ and I replied, 

"My name is Elton." 

Imagine, a three year old claiming a stage name. (I knew what I wanted to do a long time ago!) Apparently, I was dead serious and he called me 'Elton' for a while to appease me. Hahahahahahha! 'Elton'. Your friendly narrator was VERY into 'Bennie And The Jets'. VERY! Still am...just might hafta get some EJ in the mix for this project. 

Uncle Bebe always looked out for me. Uncle Jack (RIP. I miss you so much. GO STEELERS!), Uncle Tim and Uncle Marc made sure I had an amazing foundation when my Mama and I moved back home from Gary, IN. I do not know what I would be without these men. The 'Dadbod' stuff is about and for them.

This is just one of those grooves that will always catch my ear and make me smile. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it. Work is happening every day to make the 'Rusty Redenbacher Is Nasty Slim' project fantastic. I don't have a release date yet because I am in a really good groove creatively. I'm just gonna keep making the music and getting it to you when I can.

It Was A Long Year

'Away From Me, Devil' is the second hip-hop track I made for this project. I was inspired by a bad situation I was in. The best way for me to react to the situation was to put it into the music. This is how I deal with things.  I put my life, emotions and reactions into the music.

The early hip-hop tracks I produced for this project were mostly guitar-based. I was having fun (and making a statement) by chopping and rearranging guitar parts that should be really familiar to folks. It was like me challenging myself to turn them into something else and challenging the listener to figure it out.  This one is based on something your average classic-rock fan should know. 

(Hint: the titles of my tracks will typically have a reference to what was sampled to make the tune. Holler if ya know this one. I think there's some stuff in here that gives this one away. It's get more difficult as we get deeper into the game!)

I hope you dig this one. Get them devils outta your life and prosper. Do it NOWWWW!!!

Alone on a Friday Night

'Nasty To The Rescue' was originally produced for the 'DADBOD' series. This is an update from the original, which was built by overdubbing and 'stacking'. Basically, I would loop drums, then loop the samples and play each part live the whole way through. It's the same way I would build remixes with my old Tascam 4-track updated and made a wee bit simpler by the computer. It helped to tune my ear because the parts would hafta sound as 'right' as possible before even being mixed in. I couldn't make adjustments or fixes to the mix. Once the part was done, it was DONE. 

Obviously, it's a new day. I have new tools, new skills, and new energy...even for the old stuff. When I began learning the process of production for this project (say that three times fast!), 'Nasty To The Rescue' was one of the first of my older tracks that I wanted to approach with the new tools. There were some wonky moments in the original that I fixed, I added vocal samples, I adjusted the bass line to SIT where it should, I programmed new drums. It was fun to give this little track a bit of a shine. 

I hope you get a kick outta this one. I'm gonna keep rockin and droppin for y'all. Get ready for a Nasty Summer! Rusty Redenbacher is Nasty Slim...riding to you on a fine Arab chaaaaaaaargaaaaahhhh.....
