This is one of my series of auditory-visual synesthesia compositions. In this series, images are transformed into 3D and immersive electroacoustic music.
Does a tree feels anything? What kind of consciousness a tree has? One day I saw a giant tree, with its rough skin and the shape of trunk, roused this question. I would like to find the answer by composing a piece of music about a tree.

This musical work depicts the growth of a giant tree, standing on a rock, with rough skin on its trunk, went through its life experiences of blooming, decay, and finally rebirth from its illness. No matter what environment it is in, it put all of its vitality on growing and stretching. The music is composed in ambisonic system, and the audience are surrounded by the sound representing the tree, and then participating the journey of the tree at the place of the first person, to feel what the giant tree feels.

During the middle of composing process, I suddenly realized that a giant tree is more like an extension of the consciousness of the earth, an even more longer life. When I close my eyes and feel the music, I feel the primitive throbbing of the forests, through which, sense the ancient spirit of the earth and the power of its will of recovering, even though human-being brought to her such a harm. In these drastically changed era of 21th century, with new technologies and COVID-19, people are excited about the future but meanwhile have feelings of eschatology. Then I realized that the vitality of the earth will always be so powerful, and will last even longer after human-beings or other species as one of species she has breed. She gives life, which always come and go, with eternal love.

I love the photos in National Geographic magazine, especially those taken from the most remote places untouched by humans. I can imagine the photographers being immersed in those beautiful landscapes, feeling joy, peace, and perhaps loneliness while contemplating the insignificance of human beings on Earth.

I would like to convey such feelings and capture the breath of such landscapes through this work. The title, Aurora, intends to honor the sky, with magnificent mountains and coniferous forests blanketed in snow. I want my audience to see the reflections of the mountaintops on and in and ripples of surrounding lakes and feel what it is to breathe in cold and clean air. This landscape should feel joyous and untouched filled with love.

The work is written for a solo saxophone and electroacoustic performance. The solo part is mostly composed by extended techniques. The solo saxophone depicts mountains via multiphonics sounds: the aurora with practice tubes (plus glasses bottles); the ripples of lakes with singing-in-minor-seconds-while-playing techniques; and the lonely human with (only) quartertones during the solo passages. The electroacoustic part includes traditional chamber music, including the flute, piccolo, clarinet, bassoon, cello, and horn, as well as synthesized sounds. Together with those instrumental sounds, the solo saxophone part is seamlessly fused with the electroacoustic sounds.

The electroacoustic part is composed using the newest ambisonic techniques, with a 360-degree sound field surrounding the audience. When listening to this piece, audiences should use headphones to appreciate the binaural format.

I am inspired by the breathtaking photos in National Geographic magazine, particularly those that showcase the unspoiled beauty of nature in remote locations. As I view these images, I can't help but imagine the photographers feeling a sense of peace, joy, and even loneliness as they contemplate the vastness of the world and the smallness of humanity within it.

Through my work, Aurora, I aim to capture the essence of these incredible landscapes and convey the emotions they evoke. The title, Aurora, pays tribute to the magnificent sky and the snowy mountains and forests below. I want my audience to be able to see the reflection of the mountaintops on the surface of the lakes and to feel the chill of the crisp, clean air. This landscape should feel untouched and filled with love.

Aurora is written for solo saxophone and electroacoustic performance. The solo saxophone part is composed primarily of extended techniques, including multiphonics to depict the mountains, practice tubes (and glass bottles) to represent the aurora, and quartertones to evoke the sense of loneliness felt by the human observer. The electroacoustic part includes traditional chamber instruments such as flute, piccolo, clarinet, bassoon, cello, and horn, as well as synthesized sounds. This is a piece commissioned by TimeArt Studio and its ensemble.

TimeArt Studio received a letter from an alien, called OWt, from other dimensional world. OWt wants to cooperate with musicians on earth to compose a musical work. Although OWt cannot hear music generated by human-beings, but he/she can sense music in some ways. OWt asked musicians to perform music based on four different types of emotions, and have a good friend, the computer, to record and translate the music to him/her, and then asked Zoe to compose the music, which will present his/her living environment. Maybe, in a way, his/her living environment is formed by human’s inner feelings?

時間藝術工作坊收到來異次元世界的居民 OWt 的來信，說要和地球的音樂家合作一首樂曲，雖然他無法聽得到地球人的音樂，但他可以用某種方式感知的到音樂。OWt 請音樂家根據四種音樂情感演奏一些音樂片段，並請好友電腦協助將音樂紀錄並轉譯給他，再透過 Zoe 寫成音樂，而這樣的音樂，會呈現出他居住的環境。也許他的居住環境某種程度上，是人類的心靈情感世界所構成的物質化世界吧！

創作流程

此作品創作之初，先給予演奏家四個情緒指示，分別是：1. happy, content 2. vivid, exciting

3. negative feeling (sad, angry, ..) , 4. calm and tranquil。而演奏家們分別對峙個情緒指示演奏對應的音樂片段（可即興也可以自既有曲目演奏，長度不限），並以手機或簡單錄音設備錄音下來，回傳給 Zoe。為了模擬外星人無法正確聆聽人類的音樂，這些音樂片段的音訊檔直接由 AI 讀取，由電腦透過音頻辨識轉換成 MIDI 檔，再由 Logic Pro 基本內建取樣音源（長笛、豎笛、馬林巴木琴、和古箏），過帶 MIDI 的檔案至音訊檔。由於電腦對於音高的辨識和音樂家的解讀會有很大的不同，電腦對於音頻的變化解讀非常靈敏，通常單一長音會被電腦解讀為許多上下浮動的短音，又如人類特殊演奏技法也會被解讀成不同的音頻（取決於該聲響的泛音狀態），因此 AI 解讀後的音樂會有相當程度的扭曲。之後 Zoe 再聆聽『轉譯』後的音樂，透過聆聽轉譯的音樂，歸納內心浮現的場景心象，作為分別的四個場景，並完成音樂和電聲部分初稿。之後初稿完成後，各取其中四個場景的一分鐘音樂（不記片段名稱），回傳給演奏家，再請演奏家根據這四個片段演奏四個相對應的音樂，錄音並回傳給 Zoe，而 Zoe 再次將音樂片段過 AI 系統和過帶，轉譯成新的音樂片段後聆聽之，並對於新的轉譯後之音樂片對作為最後音樂色調調整的方向。

四個場景描繪如下

一、彷符置身於一個金黃色陽光包圍的花園，但是可以感覺到如海潮般的流動，也許是金黃光波粒子所組成的波浪？溫暖而天真的感覺。音樂上採用了崑曲的韻律，給予優雅溫和的感受。

二、彷彿看到如日本浮世繪的鄉野場景，有遠山、稻田，略微潮濕的空氣中透出一種原始的蟲類、生物的朝氣與活力。

三、一個由人類的未能消化掉的負面能量所蓄積的池，包含怨恨、恐懼、害怕等無法分離的情緒。充滿著如火熱的動能，人類所製造出的負能越多，OWt 的世界的負能池區塊越大，也許 OWt 世界的居民也在想應該如何分解這樣的區塊吧？此段音樂上採用京劇或北管的緊拉慢唱，帶出戲劇的張力。

四、一個如浮世繪中雪景般的地區，冷靜而沈著。彷彿所有的活力和能量往另一個溫度的方向移動，凝結成雪和霜。

One day, I was walking in a garden and wondered to myself, “What kind of creature is a flower?” Flowers are so colorful, and they create such vivid images in the mind’s eye; when people see a flower, they can sense a brightness in life. Flowers and flora usually need more sunshine than fauna to grow. With determination and energy, the flower reaches upwards from the plant stem silently, projecting a sense of tranquility. And when I try to touch a flower, I can sense its vulnerability and fragility. 

I love wondering about flowers and wanted to mimic the energy (or the consciousness) of a flower, which is why I composed this piece. 

I “painted” the images of eight flowers in the acoustic space by using the immersive ambisonic techniques of electroacoustic music and hope the audience will see the images in their mind’s eye. When I “painted” the flower, I wanted to convey how the flower is wholly itself, undistracted, and within its own unlimited energy. It’s only goal is to exist beautifully as itself in every moment.

漫遊在花的意識中
一天，在園子閒晃，忽然很好奇於花朵是一種什麼樣的生物？花朵五顏六色，總是可以給人們在視覺上一種極高的能量，展現生命的光彩。記得以前在園藝書本有注意到，花朵不同於其他植物的部分，必須要有全日照的環境才能維持生命，也可以說是要極需日光能量才能生長的（讀了園藝書以後，我依然還是黑手指）。當日站在花果旁觀察的我，感受到花朵為了綻放所呈現的生命力。然而，當它在如此展現光彩的同時，在枝頭上卻是極為寧靜，彷彿時間都靜止了一般。我試著碰觸花朵，花瓣就掉落了，驚訝於在如此無比的能量之上，卻披著極度脆落嬌柔的物質表象，如此的對比。

出於好奇，我想將花朵的能量（或意識）用音樂表達出來。運用沈浸式電聲技術，我在聲場中『畫出』八朵花，期望能將這八朵花的視覺形象，透過音樂植入聽眾的心象。在創作的過程中，我感覺到花朵的意識不是（如種子或樹僅往單一個目標前進的能量，而是向任何每個可能的方向自由綻放，如此的專注與自由，每一刻都沈浸在表達自己的美的可能性之中。

Since the early 20th century, glaciers worldwide have steadily diminished, impacting diverse regions from the Alps and Himalayas to Greenland. Antarctica, Earth's largest glacier store, faces thinning ice and shelf collapses.

Each year, glaciers discharge a colossal 46 cubic kilometers of ice, accompanied by deafening roars. Sea-bound glacier collapses involve massive ice shelves plunging into the ocean with seismic force, generating tsunami-like waves. Caution is crucial for distant shipborne observers.

This composition utilizes 3D immersive soundscapes, creating synesthetic experiences. It vividly depicts glacier texture, height, floating ice flow, and their disintegration. Beyond the mesmerizing imagery, it symbolizes human violence and destruction toward our planet. This narrative extends to the 21st-century realm of warfare, expressing an apocalyptic sentiment. Although primarily electronic, it integrates choir-like elements symbolizing the human-deity connection, delving into themes of apocalypse, redemption, and, in the final elegy, forgiveness.

Throughout its creation, I blurred the lines between painting and composing, sculpting sounds guided by my inner artistic vision. Close your eyes to sense the glacier's texture, temperature, weight, and the waves enveloping its consumed essence. 🎨🎵🌊❄️

自20世紀初以來，全球多數冰川都在不斷縮小🌍🏔️🌡️。這種現象已經觀察到在各大洲的不同地區，包括亞爾卑斯山脈、喜馬拉雅山脈、洛磯山脈、安第斯山脈等，格陵蘭島的冰川近年來正在經歷大規模的融化。南極洲是地球上最大的冰川存放區之一，某些地區的冰層變薄，並且有冰架崩解的情況。

Many of us are aware of the remarkable intelligence displayed by whales. They exhibit family bonds and care for their offspring similar to humans. The mournful moans they emit when losing family members reflect a deep emotional capacity that resonates with our own experiences. Whales communicate through vocalizations, using a variety of sounds and frequencies, and they also demonstrate teamwork and sophisticated hunting strategies.
Perhaps less known is that different whale populations in various ocean regions have unique "cultures." Despite sharing the same physical structures, these groups adhere to specific dietary preferences due to cultural reasons. Similar to the culinary distinctions between Western and Eastern tastes in humans, whales exhibit unique dietary habits, forming part of their cultural identity.
Humpback whales, in particular, possess a fascinating cultural phenomenon—their songs. Male whales from the same region learn and share specific songs, akin to their pop music. These compositions are learned in segments from a young age, featuring repetition and rhyme, similar to the structure of human songs. Once a song is learned, the entire group gradually improvises on it, continually evolving and collectively learning the variations over days, weeks, or even years, fostering a shared cultural experience.
Humpback whales are renowned for their diverse vocalizations, with a song typically lasting between 5 to 30 minutes. Inspired by this captivating cultural feature, I began to transcribe an 8-minute humpback whale song and interpreted it using wind instruments and the erhu. The instrumentation is divided into two parts: the humpback whale’s melodic singing and the rest of the orchestra creating the ocean atmosphere and depicting the storyline.
The narrative begins with a joyous humpback whale swimming and singing in the deep sea, with the resonance of wind instruments mimicking the whale’s majestic presence, accompanied by other instruments evoking the sound of ocean waves. The piece transitions to another scene, where the humpback whale dances happily beneath the waves, incorporating elements of traditional Eastern dance music to vividly portray the scene. The third section depicts the humpback whale meditating alone in the tranquil, deep, dark ocean. The final part shows the whale gradually being surrounded by other sea creatures, eventually reuniting with its family, forming a colorful underwater tableau. The whale’s sounds gradually fade into the distance, depicting its departure.
Several deliberate choices were made in creating this piece. First, using culturally traditional Eastern instruments was to pay tribute to the humpback whale's culture. Second, the transcription of the whale song closely mirrors the original version, maintaining its temporal and pitch characteristics to present a karaoke-like effect, making it a "pop song." Third, the piece ends with the whale’s departure, emphasizing the whale as a sentient being with the right to exist independently, urging us to respect their lives and protect their habitats.
In summary, the Earth is home to many highly intelligent creatures that should be regarded as another species similar to humans, showcasing their unique cultures and emotions. We urgently need to recognize and respect their coexistence needs, fostering a more harmonious relationship with these species.

Explosions of heat in the dark,
Shining, roaring,
Turning all in its path to ash and flame.

Yet, as it advances,
The glacier's cold confronts,
Deep within ice and snow,
Lava's heat bursts through the surface,
But the frigid air gathers,
Forming chimney-like ice pillars,
Half fire, half ice—
A battle where fire and ice entwine
Frozen in place.

Lava enters the icy tunnel,
Each step carving marks on frozen walls,
Steam and heat,
Etching hollows on the ice,
Like blooming frozen flowers,
Breaths intertwined,
Eroding solid ice into shifting forms,
Shards of crystal shatter,
In the clash,
A silent symphony reverberates.

At the tunnel’s end,
A cavern dark and deep,
Silent as death,
Cold waters mirror the faint glow,

Bass Clarinet Concerto Taiji-the Origin of Si Xiang (Four Phenomena) (2008)

This is a work for memorizing the trip visiting the Plitvice Lakes National Park at Croatia, and reflect the live and the breath of the forest. It is very important to have natural sound to speak itself, therefore, I compose this work with 50 % of soundscapes  and 50% of electronic (with chamber music sound) music. The soundscapes are not backgrounds, but foreground mingled with electronic chamber music part. In this work, I use granular synthesis to mimic the 'heart-beat' of the nature.

The Breath Of The Forest (for normal headphone with weak low frequencies)

This piece is about my fantasies of staring at stars. Sometimes the sky makes me imagine the sci-fi movie;  sometimes about the dimensional worlds of physics, sometimes fear from a nightmare. After all, through those images,  I feel curred and refreshed mentally in the end.

這首作品是凝視星空的幻想，夜空有時讓人想到科幻電影、物理的多次元世界、惡夢中的場景..等，但總之，透過這些幻想，到給了心靈的洗鍊與沈澱。

I wrote this piece for my grandmother. With recordings of my grandma’s talking (in Taiwanese) about her young ages. Through her talking, I hear stories about her mother-in-law with binding feet in Taiwan and her sad memories about common domestic violence in Taiwan 70 years ago. She also speaks two Taiwanese ditties: one is about how women in her age wishing their husbands and parents-in-law to be healthy, and the other is about ancient people's future telling based on fingerprints. 

Taiwanese has quite a different tone from mandarins. I usually find this tone is musical. This kind of pronunciation and content of speakings are gradually vanishing because elderly people are gradually disappearing.  Through her memories, it is fun to peek the old life-styles and the roles for women in Taiwan. I hope those Taiwanese speaking tones and speaking content with old stories could be preserved through this musical piece.

這首作品是寫給我的八十多歲的阿嬤，這首作品中有阿嬤用台語訴說她童年故事的錄音。從她的故事中，我聽到一個關於他婆婆纏足女人的故事、以及阿嬤自身兒時家暴的日常。另外他也說了兩則台語的俚語，一則是過去婦女對公婆說的好話和對自身的期望（期望夫婿與公婆身體健康），另一則則是指紋歌，用指紋的圈數未孩童算命。

台語和國語有很不一樣的語調，對我而言，台語的音調非常有音樂性，而像阿嬤這樣的說話內容與音調，因為長者的凋零正在慢慢消逝中，從他的故事裡，我們窺見了早年台灣的生活方式以及女性的角色。非常希望透過這個作品，這些傳廾的記憶能得以保存在心中。

This is the ossia version specifically for the well-known Taiwanese harpsichord player, Chia-Hsuan Tsai. In the third section of the harpsichord part, she purposely chose the temperament of 415/392 Hz Werckmeister to evoke the feeling of the suffering people from different corners of the earth. Even though people from different places with different experiences of life (as the diverse temperaments tuned at the same time in this section), the empathy of the suffering leads people to overcome the bad situation.

Sebastian Nagretshei, also known as Yi-Cheng Lin, is an accomplished composer specializing in auditory-visual synesthesia, 3D immersive music, and AI music development.  He previously worked as Chief Music Officer at an AI music company before transitioning to his current role as a full-time composer and adjunct assistant professor at National Taiwan Normal University. 

His work has received international acclaim, featured at prestigious events like SiMN 2023, MUSLAB Planeta Complejo exhibition, NYCEMF 2023, SICMF 2023, NIME 2023, MiRNArte 2023, EiS 2023, NoiseFloor 2023, Earth Day Art Model 2023, MOXsonic Festival 2023, ICMC 2022, IRCAM Forum 2022, SICMF 2022, and Atemporánea 2022.
