Pamela Z composed this piece as part of the score for Reveries and Elegies, Mary Armentrout’s site specific performance project – a shifting, wandering, accumulating, de-accumulating installation that explores change, loss, and dislocation.  The track is composed entirely of samples of Armentrout's speaking voice, which Z has layered, stretched, squeezed, and dissected. In the performance, Z's soundtrack was paired with a time-lapse film by Ian Winters layered on a live dance by Mary Armentrout.

Medical text pp. 57: Age is an aggressive, virtuosic, and remarkably vulnerable piece crafted around the text found in the educational tome Cyclopædia of Practical Medicine Vol. 1 published in 1845. 
The chapter that this piece addresses is on the topic of age and its effects on the body through the multiple stages of life, beginning with nascent burgeoning growth and advancing to eventual unerring onset of decay. This piece manipulates the coherence of text and plays off of humanities want to comprehend speech in voices, often crafting phones and consonants that are similar to speech but contorting them beyond understanding. When juxtaposed with recognizable text and married with a plethora of timbral driven gestures and extended vocal techniques, smooth transitions between nonsense and meaningful text help to drive the piece through continuums of obfuscation and clarity.

“Listening offers another point of view, an alternative perspective on how things are, producing new ideas on how they could be, and how we could live in a sonic possible world, and how we could include sound’s invisible formlessness in a current realization and valuation of what we understand to be the actual world.” [Salome Voegelin - Sonic Possible Worlds, 2014]

How can the invisible and shapeless sound be represented by a human voice and transformed into a tangible form like a word in a language? What kind of sonoric experience is created when we listen to a foreign language, where the words are neutralized from their meaning? How can a change in an environment affect our listening practices and the way we experience and vocalize sounds?

RishRush (=the Hebrew onomatopeia word for “the rustling of leaves”) is a voice-sound triptych that travels around a multi-lingual onomatopoeic space and inviting the listener to explore alternative listening practices, while loosening the connection between word and its meaning or between a sound and its function in an agreed sign system (=language); it is a recollection of the initial reverberation of things into a language;  an invitation to question the formation of formless sound into a material (=voice), and the fragile tension that exists between the actual vocal expression and its object: all the sounds in the world, including the silence.

Contradictory Truths

"While the Coronavirous lockdown made many things impossible or infinitely more difficult and painful, it also opened up an unprecedented space to think, to reflect and to work in ways that the usual pressures deny. 

On March 17th David Toop and Lucie Stepankova were due to play in a trio with Yifeat Ziv at Café Oto; then on April 9ththey were also booked to play at Iklectik as a duo. Both gigs were cancelled, of course, because of the virus. In support of Iklectik, Lucie and David agreed to record a track together in the only way possible, by exchanging files and passing mixes back and forth across the aether. The feeling of working on this first track was positive so they decided to make a mini-album. One of the elements from the first track was a reading by Lucie of a passage from Kenya Hara’s book, On White, and this preoccupation with colour became a theme for the whole project. Other tracks were inspired by the writings of Himla af Klint on mystical blue, Hokusai on shades of black, François Jullien on the six colours of Chinese ink and Cees Noteboom on the yellow/orange hue of a ceramic bowl. 

Jullien wrote of a transition from ‘physical concretion to spirit dimension’, according to the dilution of the ink. This is how these tracks felt as they emerged between April and June of extraordinary times. When the album was finished it seemed fitting to offer it to Café Oto in a gesture of support and hopefulness for the future of London’s key venues. 

David Toop and Lucie Stepankova have previously played in duos at Café Oto, Iklectik and at the Jhilava documentary film festival. They have also played in trios with Yifeat Ziv at Hundred Years Gallery, Tania Caroline Chen at Iklectik and John Butcher at Hangar Bicocca, Milan." - David & Lucie

Parstronix's Parasol Unit Gallery live improv performance to mark the Navid Nuur solo exhibition, May 2013. Navid Nuur is a Dutch-Iranian artist whose works are based on phenomenological experiences. Performers for this incarnation of Parstronix were Sam Fathi on daf drum, Fari Bradley on Monotron, Armin Firouzabadi on guitar and Roshi Nasehi on voice and keys. Experimental vocalist and sound artist Yifeat Ziv debuts on FP for our 100th release with her glorious exploration of sounding in the Brazilian Amazon. Some words from her text accompanying the release are below:
