This week’s project involves members of the Disquiet Junto participating in another music-making community: the Naviar Haiku Project. Already members of the Junto have joined in the Naviar, and this is an opportunity to add to those ranks. Each week participants in the Naviar Haiku Project compose original pieces of music in response to a shared, provided haiku. The following are the steps for this week.

Step 1: This is the haiku for the 12th Naviar Haiku project entry:

Step 2: Compose an original piece of music in response.

Step 3: Upload the file to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud and describe your approach and process in the text field associated with the track.

obsidian [naviarhaiku012 – they encounter / disquiet0117-naviarjunto]

I shouldn't but I had to….I'm writing a paper to conclude my studies at DIEM, Denmark for a degree in Electronic Music Composition - but this assignment sounded to good  when it landed in my inbox this morning...
I set out, as I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted the track to sound like, and it wouldn't take long (did someone say naive?). I also wanted to try out my new interface for transferring digital audio from my iPad to my DAW - I ended up not using an sounds from the iPad, but anyhow I had fun trying and the excuse for working on this piece sounded good in my ears….What I did do, was using a couple of recordings of ice and snow, and a recording of a piano at a local thrift shop…and myself whispering the haiku. The ice and snow recordings where eq'ed a bit the piano went through Ambient a couple of times and once through a looper/delay in Reaktor. The final result is pretty close to what I thought of, before I started - as always things changed once I started experimenting with the material…but thats okay.

**Production Notes**

"Cathedral of ice?" Well, this had to be a drone. 

The base is an older piece, heavily filtered and treated. Added some Operator Sine bass here and there. The Pianos are from Boscomac (great free Reaktor stuff over there!) and the synth is Ye Good Ol’ Animoog on the iPhone - weeeee! Finally there were some last touches woth my new toy, a shortwave radio. 

Composing, arranging and mixing took 3 hours. Thanks for listening!

Creek [disquiet0117-naviarjunto]

I wanted to mirror the proportions of a haiku in my piece, so I chose to make part A 5 x 4 measures, B 7 x 4 measures and C again 5 x 4, which made for a nice length at 100 bpm. I wanted to start building the piece using chords; my main problem there is that I automatically resort to 4-bar chords when I start a project. I decided to force myself to use non-uniform chord lengths. I thought I would reduce the length of the chords as the section progressed.

As a happy coincidence, I realized that 4 + 2 x 3 + 3 x 2 + 4 x 1 = 20! I thought to reuse this framework in reverse, and so to use the same chord progression, backwards, for section C. Section B has mostly 2-bar chords but some are 1/2 bar. The beginning and ending chords are also symmetrical but not the middle ones.

I chose a shimmery pad for sections A & C (ice) and an organ-like pad for section B (cathedral). I wanted a tinkly sound to play against that, and sequenced a loose, meandering melody for section A. A flute-like patch plays almost throughout, usually reinforcing the highest chord tone. I added an arpeggiated patch for section B to increase contrast.

The haiku was too short for my initial plan to record myself reciting it, stretch the sound, and use that as background. I did record myself whispering into the mike (one take), split it into 3 parts, and processed each with different effects: echo & reverb, multitap delay, plain reverb. The snippets are repeated a few times but not too evenly.

A one-measure intro and one-measure outro serve to bracket the piece. Part of me just wants to keep piling on layers and effects in hopes of coming up with something dazzling, but don't haikus teach us that less is more?

Cathedral At The End Of The World [disquiet0117-naviarjunto/Naviarhaiku012 – They encounter]

Very nice samples to work with.
I unmuted the first 3 (or the last 3?) the more "synth" ones, didn't use the glitchy/noise tracks. Those 3 tracks played back with no added fx or mix sounded full Vangelis for me.
I  miss and I know I will miss Vangelis Papathanassíou for the rest of my life.

I wanted to make a ten minutes track, because thats 600 seconds for disquiet0600. Some of the samples went into granular meat grinders of different kinds (but mostly Granulator II in Live), others were used more or less directly, but with something from Puremagnetik as an FX. I went by stomach for a track that would please my taste, using only Marcus samples

Rejigged (disquiet0629)

I extracted 6 parts from an old track of mine. These are initially exposed in sequence, subsequently the processing was done by altering exclusively the speed and duration of each part. The piece from which I extracted the 6 parts was built with csound, the subsequent reworking was also done with csound and then mixed with audacity.

This was my contribution for Disquiet Junto Project 0629: Jigsaw Logic

Here’s a copy of my post on the Disquiet Junto 0629 discussion thread:

Wasn’t sure how to go about this project at first so I wasn’t going to participate but after thinking about it for a bit, landed on the following solution. 

I used the piece that I created for Disquiet Junto 0589: Auto Play from April 2023, Autogenic Succession. Imported the audio file into Ableton Live and let Simpler auto-slice the sound file. I then used the Max for Live MIDI device, Random Notes by Hacktive, to sequence the slices onto two tracks. It took several tries of tweaking before I was somewhat happy with the final result. The final minute is the unaltered last section from the original project.

My thought here was that it could do with some percussion, so I designed sound percussion sounds. I made a set of sounds then did a few layers of finger drumming in time to the original. I struggled a little with the transition into the bridge (which has a different tempo) but broadly I think it worked out. You can download a version with the two parts hard panned left & right here:

Placebo Effect 2/3 (disquiet0473)

Disquiet Junto Project 0474 – Complete a trio by adding a track to an existing duet by two other musicians.

How do I start? Singing is always dangerous, if you are not a singer… No… okay, this way: Some children can only be loved by their parents… one must stand by one's misdeeds … my microphone was broken … the true beauty of music is that it connects us, yes, this is it! 

I startet with the playlist https://soundcloud.com/disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0473 and went to "around the middle of it" and started listening until I found something I liked: https://soundcloud.com/disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0473 by https://soundcloud.com/daniel-diaz (guitar) and https://soundcloud.com/ray_cobley (synth). The strange mixture felt right and asked for some voice.

So I improvised with the text given by the titles (and some extra text). I did two takes. I added as much plugins as possible to hide the fact that I can't sing. As you can hear: Neither can I sing, nor am I able to hide it with production gimmicks.

Anyway, after slicing my vocals I somehow liked it. Yes, you will have to listen to it 20 times, drinking some high octane booze, but then you will discover the hidden beauty of this track. Thanks, guys, I really had a lot of fun with this!

Diaz/Cobley/Krakenkraft: Would Somebody Please Do Something? [disquiet0474]

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
