Disquiet Junto Project 0177: Netlabel Portrait

Very nice samples to work with.
I unmuted the first 3 (or the last 3?) the more "synth" ones, didn't use the glitchy/noise tracks. Those 3 tracks played back with no added fx or mix sounded full Vangelis for me.
I  miss and I know I will miss Vangelis Papathanassíou for the rest of my life.
This one's for him.

I wanted to make a ten minutes track, because thats 600 seconds for disquiet0600. Some of the samples went into granular meat grinders of different kinds (but mostly Granulator II in Live), others were used more or less directly, but with something from Puremagnetik as an FX. I went by stomach for a track that would please my taste, using only Marcus samples

Rejigged (disquiet0629)

I extracted 6 parts from an old track of mine. These are initially exposed in sequence, subsequently the processing was done by altering exclusively the speed and duration of each part. The piece from which I extracted the 6 parts was built with csound, the subsequent reworking was also done with csound and then mixed with audacity.

This was my contribution for Disquiet Junto Project 0629: Jigsaw Logic

Here’s a copy of my post on the Disquiet Junto 0629 discussion thread:

Wasn’t sure how to go about this project at first so I wasn’t going to participate but after thinking about it for a bit, landed on the following solution. 

I used the piece that I created for Disquiet Junto 0589: Auto Play from April 2023, Autogenic Succession. Imported the audio file into Ableton Live and let Simpler auto-slice the sound file. I then used the Max for Live MIDI device, Random Notes by Hacktive, to sequence the slices onto two tracks. It took several tries of tweaking before I was somewhat happy with the final result. The final minute is the unaltered last section from the original project.

Shapeshifted Autogenic Succession [disquiet0629]

I always enjoy these remixes - get to do stuff I don't usually do... I tried a bunch of stuff: Paul Stretched and Hourglassed the samples, played, folded and reversed the life out of them...but ended up with the three samples loaded into Borderlands on my iPad. I recorded the outcome into Ableton - added a little pingpong delay on one track and some mastering to the whole thing and voila...

Every couple of months the Disquiet Junto hosts a netlabel remix. All of the source audio for a netlabel remix is available for free, non-commercial download and creative reuse thanks to a Creative Commons license. This series of “netlabel remixes” is intended to promote that sort of thoughtful, collaborative sharing.

The netlabel Dark Winter has already released three albums this year. We’re going to use a snippet of one track from each of those records, and in combining them produce a kind of sonic snapshot of the label.

Step 1: Create a new piece of music by using nothing but the following segments of the following songs:

**Production Notes**

All sounds you hear derive from three tracks of the Dark Winter net label (see below). Nothing else was added. 

Netlabel remixes at Disquiet Junto are always fun, and this was no exception. I started extracting a loop from the track “DSM III – The Cristalline Entity”. After that I reversed the intros of the other tracks, tried to extract some low notes and get the bass right (no easy task). 

After that, it was just laying out the pieces. I used Ableton Live’s Corpus, the lovely Crossfade Loop Effect from Expert Sleepers and a ton of EQs. 

Yeah, I know, I know, it’s a strange one (again - but I kinda like it that way).

Mind on many things; took on this Junto as a wind down, and a quick turnaround. Became sufficiently meditative I can't recall the steps: Some messing about in Audacity to break down the original 3x 30sec into various balanced level blends and blocks - then racked up as AudioMulch feeds through multi-FX structures and out onto the control surface.

Winter's Turn [Disquiet Junto Project 0177: Netlabel Portrait]

I started with a loop of the Scott Lawlor snippet and used a step sequencing EQ filter to softly enforce a tempo. Then I modulated a duplicate of the Lawlor loop to create a melody. And I used granular synthesis of the Nadador Nocturno snippet to create an interesting setting in which to place the melody.

A Mourning Song [Disquiet0177 - Netlabel Portrait]

I used “World of Ice and Snow” looping forward & backward as a drone almost throughout. It is also passed through RP-Distort, a rythmic patch in Etch Red and a bitcrusher to produce a noisy heartbeat. Taming this one proved a challenge, as it tended to overwhelm the rest of the track in its loudest passages, but I did not want to destroy the dynamics either.

A passage of “Underground Shelter” is used at various pitches. The same bit is fed through an extreme effect to produce a more discordant sound, and in yet another track, this time effected by 3Plex with a rythmic preset. 

“DSM III” is played straight, but backwards and at different pitches. It is also used, with reverb followed by stereo delay, for the church-bell like peal that rings every four bars in the first section and every two bars in the third.

I had hoped to make a greater contrast between the sections. More time (and/or better inspiration) would no doubt have helped. I think setting myself a clearer goal from the start and perhaps choosing some specific and more radical effects would have been indicated.

Jam Time 1/3 (disquiet0472)

My thought here was that it could do with some percussion, so I designed sound percussion sounds. I made a set of sounds then did a few layers of finger drumming in time to the original. I struggled a little with the transition into the bridge (which has a different tempo) but broadly I think it worked out. You can download a version with the two parts hard panned left & right here:

Placebo Effect 2/3 (disquiet0473)

Disquiet Junto Project 0474 – Complete a trio by adding a track to an existing duet by two other musicians.

How do I start? Singing is always dangerous, if you are not a singer… No… okay, this way: Some children can only be loved by their parents… one must stand by one's misdeeds … my microphone was broken … the true beauty of music is that it connects us, yes, this is it! 

I startet with the playlist https://soundcloud.com/disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0473 and went to "around the middle of it" and started listening until I found something I liked: https://soundcloud.com/disquiet/sets/disquiet-junto-project-0473 by https://soundcloud.com/daniel-diaz (guitar) and https://soundcloud.com/ray_cobley (synth). The strange mixture felt right and asked for some voice.

So I improvised with the text given by the titles (and some extra text). I did two takes. I added as much plugins as possible to hide the fact that I can't sing. As you can hear: Neither can I sing, nor am I able to hide it with production gimmicks.

Anyway, after slicing my vocals I somehow liked it. Yes, you will have to listen to it 20 times, drinking some high octane booze, but then you will discover the hidden beauty of this track. Thanks, guys, I really had a lot of fun with this!

Diaz/Cobley/Krakenkraft: Would Somebody Please Do Something? [disquiet0474]

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications.
