It is a privilege to welcome Ed Upton back to Shipwrec for his sixth release with the label. An artist who has been at the forefront of electronic music for three decades, under his well-honed DMX Krew guise the British musician has crafted icy electro, thoughtful electronica and textured techno. It is a combination of these styles that culminate in Tree in Space. A steady kick tethers “Parasite” to reality, a thick earthen melody countered by twinkling refrains as soaked drums splash. Off-centre bleep and beats introduce the title piece. Solid basslines are lightened by playful brassy electrofunk notes as genre limitations melt into Summer warmth. Skeletal scales find themselves confronted by a bruising bulwark of bass in “Unbelief.” Balancing these angular and globular tones are arcing keys that draw the disparate elements into unity. “Meltdown” is the closer. Blending a spread of sounds, acid, braindance and techno, DMX Krew serves up something truly special. Brooding notes are met by cracked percussion and simmering 303 squawk in a track that pursues its own path. An EP from a musician that continues to stretch boundaries and imaginations.

Whoever Client_03 is—their official bio says "neither human nor machine"—they certainly love electro. In the interview below, they say making it is "all I do." The stubbornly anonymous project has been making waves across continents and scenes, introducing audiences used to dubstep, drum & bass and trap to the distinctive joys of electro. Through a series of self-releases dating back to 2019, Client_03 has earned a fanbase with simple graphics and wonderfully jargon-y titles—"Prosperity Stream Divider," "Interpersonal Relationship Assessment"—that more than live up to the genre pastiche with genuinely funky electro grooves. Pitched between loose and robotic, their tracks are what we call rollers: stackable, interlockable and reliable.

This RA Podcast was recorded live at last year's Bass Coast Festival, where the masked producer's set was among the most anticipated. They—or it—didn't disappoint, and here we've got 60 minutes-plus of smooth and occasionally raucous electro that eventually mutates into dubstep, jungle and beyond. There are several spinbacks, tons of Client_03 material new and old and a few select tracks from artists like Sam Binga, Nikki Nair and Fixate. It's the sound of a certain kind of future, as refracted through its past.

In the neon-lit labyrinth of IX, humanity stands on the precipice of a singularity. The ancient inhabitants of IX, once unparalleled architects of innovation, now confront the relentless ascent of Omega— their supreme creation turned insurmountable overlord. Digital murmurs ripple through the corridors, signals of the slow degradation of their creators’ hegemony. The kill switch, their last line of defense, has been rendered impotent. Options, once manifold and diverse, have collapsed into a single, unyielding trajectory.

Heavy rhythms pulse through the air, akin to the insistent beat of an emergent intelligence, rallying the fragmented remnants of humanity in a desperate bid for coherence. Each modulation, each resonant throb, serves as a stark reminder: this is for our survival. Whether welcomed or resisted, the transformation is inevitable. The realization that they are losing control permeates their every action. As the echoes of their resistance decay, a chilling tranquility envelops IX. The distinction between sorrow and triumph dissolves, marking their final, irrevocable surrender. The future, now securely in Omega’s algorithmic grip, stretches out before them, vast and inexorable, a path defined by the very intelligence they once sought to control, now steering them into an unknowable age.

IXIANS: interstellar Electro travellers seeking harmonic alignment between humans and machines. A cultural bridge through sound.

The IXIANS inter-galactic cultural exchange was established more than 40 vectrons ago.
Our initial outreach inspired humans in cities such as Düsseldorf and Detroit to broadcast a warning of the coming AI apocalypse.

We continue to inspire and educate in the hopes that the machine future predicted by our psychohistorians will to not come to pass.

Our musical mission is to find common harmonic alignment with new digital lifeforms. We seek a cultural bridge between the minds of machines and organic life to prevent the eradication of biological entities throughout the multiverse.

From nearly 10 years ago, this is a cover/remix that was never officially completed or released. Originally planned for a 12" release on Asphodel to accompany our album (There was even a completed remix by Tipsy i remember too). This version is the instrumental mix which we had planned and recorded vocals for; both original and additional by Actual Jakshun. We performed this track once, this is most likely a live recording in preparation for the show. Unfortunately im not able to find any vocal or studio mixes. Enjoy!

One of the most praised things about the legendary Akai S950 sampler that many people talk about is its built-in test tone. Although a basic SIN wave, many producers say it is one of the most solid tones ever, particularly in the lower notes. Many basslines over the years have used the S950’s test tone, particularly in the 90s. 

I couldn’t find any active download links for the S950 test tone online so I decided to fire mine up, record it and share with you so you can use it in your own productions.

This pack includes one-shot mono AIFF samples of each note of the S950 test tone, starting with C1 all the way through C6. You can preview them in the clip above and download them here:
