In order to create slightly futuristic cars i had some fun using "whoosh" from Melted sounds, loading sounds from Jedsound, Frank Bry, Tim Prebble Andreas Usenbenz and strange roomtones previously made using a convolution reverb :

FUTURISTIC WHOOSHES USING MELTED SOUND INSTRUMENT

Using a Convolution reverb it is possible to turn any soundclip into a roomtone with the harmonics characteristics of the original sound. The technique is described by douglas murray here :

Applying this technique with great libraries from Frank Bry, Tim Prebble and Andreas Usenbenz, you can hear first the sounds I used as impulse responses and then the generated roomtone

HOW TO TURN ANY CLIP INTO ROOMTONE USING CONVOLUTION REVERB

Examples of using fantastic Guntails sounds recorded in Idaho mountains by Frank Bry as Impulse responses. Original sounds are from libraries i own from The recordist and free sounds from Boom Library.
Frank Bry recorded gun sounds using multi-mic set up : close, med, far, focusing on the guntails echoing through the mountains. I extracted  some, and feeded many convolution reverbs (TL space)in Protools, according to their position : close, med, far. For each multisample, I cut it in 3 different way : Full (the whole gun sound), Cut (I removed the first 400 milliseconds of the sound, to eliminate the impact and the high frequencies), and Fade (to only get the Guntail without the Bang). The IR are listed as this : CLOSE MIC -->FULL IR, MED DISTANT MIC--> CUT IR, and FAR DISTANT MIC--> FADE IR.

SO, if you follow me i have 7 Convolution verb, on 7 parallel aux tracks (in my case, 2 close Mic, 3 Med distant, and 2 Far distant).
After, i began to play with a close recording of a train horn : choosing and balancing the Reverb tracks, you can simulate that the train is far distant, med or close . I'll keep this Protools session as a template when I will need a mountain reverb, with a very long tail !!!
These exemples are quickly made, I think i can go further, using different type of guns and riffles for each IR, choosing the best sounding...
One last thing, It works almost only with sounds that exists naturally in the mountains, and loud enough to excite these long echoes (the train horn for exemple).
