This composition is written based on the Malaysian folktale – Puteri Gunung Ledang. The folktale revolves around a celestial princess who lived on Mount Ledang, located in present-day Tangkak District, Johor, Malaysia. The Malacca sultan had heard of the princess' beauty and wanted to marry her, but she set seven impossible conditions for him. 

The whole composition can be divided into 5 main sections: Intro – Mysterious, nervous, dance- like – Frightening, funeral dance – Mix of beautifully and forcefully – Finale. In the 2nd and last section, I use the seven conditions as the main idea. Throughout the whole piece, I use some of the elements from the Malay traditional style – Zapin, specifically in the improvisation intro, its interlocking dance-like rhythm, and the melodic minor melody.

The seven conditions used in the final section are taken from the movie “Puteri Gunung Ledang” directed by Saw Teong Hin. All spoken word in this composition is in Malay.

This composition is written for “Free Hand – Malaysian Contemporary Composers Piano Festival”. Knowing that it is an educational event inspired me to include more technical aspects. “9 Etudes for Piano” is a one-movement work that contains 9 different piano techniques: glissando, arpeggios, scale, chromatic scale, octave, chord voicing, repeating note, tremolo, and complex rhythm.

This piece tributes to four important piano etude composers, by quoting one of their etudes:
1. Czerny etude op740 no.18 
2. Ligeti etude no. 1 Désordre 
3. Chopin etude op25 no10 
4. Liszt etude S139 no.2
