This song is inspired by Isabel Ecclestone Mackay’s poem, which recounts the tragic fate of Marguerite de La Rocque de Roberval, a noblewoman abandoned on the Isle of Demons during the early voyages to New France in the sixteenth century. 

Her story, preserved in legend and testimony, reflects both the harsh realities of colonial expansion and the vulnerability of women whose lives were often dictated by male authority. 
Through spoken narration, lyrical verses, and instrumental interludes, the piece evokes love, motherhood, loss, and survival, framing Marguerite not only as a victim of exile but as a witness of resilience. 

This work is both ballad and lament, bridging early twentieth century poetry with the lived struggles of women in the founding era of New France, inviting the listener into the intimate memory of a woman who endured abandonment and death yet survived to testify to her strength.

About the author of the poem

Isabel Ecclestone Mackay (1875–1928) was a Canadian poet, novelist, and playwright, remembered for her lyrical style and her role in shaping early Canadian literature.
Born in Woodstock, Ontario, she began publishing poems and stories as a teenager under the pseudonym Heather. Over her career she produced six novels, four poetry collections, and five plays, while contributing hundreds of poems and short stories to Canadian newspapers and magazines. After moving to Vancouver in 1909, she became a central figure in the literary community, co‑founding the British Columbia chapter of the Canadian Women’s Press Club and serving as president of the Canadian Authors Association’s Vancouver branch.

Her work often explored themes of memory, love, and resilience, and she was closely connected to other Canadian writers such as E. Pauline Johnson and Marjorie Pickthall. Mackay’s poem on Marguerite de La Rocque de Roberval reflects her interest in blending historical legend with emotional depth, giving voice to women’s experiences across time.
