In this installment of Sound Advice, we are proud to present our first live episode, featuring dance music giant Laidback Luke. The Dutch DJ, producer and founder of Mixmash Records joins us from SoundCloud NYC to reflect on his decades-long career, from headlining the world’s biggest stages to developing his mammoth sound.

Recorded live in front of a studio audience, we talk to Luke about the evolution of his career, how he first got started and the stories behind some of his biggest tracks. We also explore his approach to DJing today, his return to the bloghouse sound and his recent call for remixes of his track, “1000 BPM.” Plus, hear Laidback Luke pass on wisdom learned from his kung fu teacher, his advice for staying prepared in the music industry and much more.

While Finn Wolfhard is known for his acting roles in Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” and the two recent “Ghostbusters” reboots, music is his first love. Most recently, Wolfhard has played in the alternative rock duo The Aubreys, alongside drummer Malcolm Craig, and today, is sharing his solo material with the world. In this exclusive commentary, Wolfhard talks about the making of his debut solo album, ‘Happy Birthday,’ which was released this past June via AWAL. The album grew out of a self-imposed challenge to write 50 songs by the end of 2022. It’s “always been something that I can control,” Wolfhard says. Certain themes emerged — nostalgia, loneliness, anxiety — but the music is joyful pop-rock. Several tracks, like “Crown” and  “Trailers After Dark,” were written in the attic of his childhood home in Vancouver. “I missed being a kid,” he tells SoundCloud. “Still do.” Listen now.

U.S. Girls, the solo indie pop project of vocalist and musician Meg Remy, was inspired by a one-off gig with a group of Nashville musicians for her latest album, ‘Scratch It.’ In this exclusive commentary, Remy discusses the making of tracks from the album, and the themes that inspired her lyrics. On “Firefly on the 4th of July,” a song about the fear of nuclear war is turned into “a garage-soul classic,” she tells SoundCloud. The track “Emptying the Jimador” recalls a bout with a bottle of tequila after reckoning with her fraught relationship with her mother, while “No Fruit” is a pent-up response to “someone who said something mean to me once.” As an experimental pop songwriter who grew up on riot grrrl bands, Meg is scratching a new itch. Congolese-Canadian vocalist LU KALA is as upbeat in person as on her tracks. “Massive anthemic energy” is “my signature,” she shares. In this exclusive commentary, LU KALA talks about the making of her sophomore EP,  ‘No Tears on This Ride,’ and what inspires her lyrics. Having written for acts such as Jennifer Hudson and Katy Perry, and featured on Latto’s hit 2023 track “Lottery,” the EP sees LU KALA step more into her solo work. On the focus track, “Work,” she welcomes another fast-rising Canadian, Shelailai. The track “Hotter Now” expresses “the hottest version of myself,” she tells SoundCloud. “A perfect breakup anthem, if I do say so myself.” And with “No Exes,” another celebratory rebound track, “You can’t help but dance and sing along.” Listen now, only on SoundCloud.
