The Compound

This mix is from a private party I played at The Compound in Victoria BC, Canada on April 22, 2023. The occasion was Kelsey's birthday, and the event organized by Stuart and Kelsey of Dancing Owl. It was an incredible party with loads of smiling faces, and as the sun came up in the morning some of the dancers took a dip in the pool.

I have been asked about the music I played there, and so I put this mix together for everyone. As an evening progresses, I often change up my musical programming to respond to the dancefloor. For me responding to the dancers is part of the charm of dance music, and it's great to have that interaction with the crowd. This also means it's can be hard to go back and redo exactly what sounded good at the time. Because the live set was an hour long, I added in a few more tracks here to bring it up to an hour and a half. Other than the addition of a little more music, I did my best to recreate what I could of the show. I hope you enjoy!

Yoseff Samchuk 5 - @The Compound - April 22, 2023

Every year Shambhala Music Festival brings together some of the world's best electronic music, art, and culture. It is consistently voted one of the top ten festivals in the world. It never ceases to amaze me how large the festival has grown from it's humble beginnings in the woods of BC Canada. 

There are a few reasons why I called this mix, "The Return From Shambhala."

This mix is something personal to me. I have played Shambles many times over the years, but it is more than just my return to perform at an amazing party in Salmo, BC. I grew up in Toronto and spent some time in Vancouver, but these days I live in Victoria, BC. While I have never lived in Salmo or the Kootenays, I do have friends and family there. The friends who have worked at Shambhala are too numerous to list, even my brother Michael and sister Natasha have volunteered to help with the show. My father (Padma Samchuk) is a local and before he retired from working at raves, he worked for many years on the various incarnations of The Grove stage. Each year he brought new art, large-scale decorations and live painting exhibitions to the event. One of his large banners flanking the entrance to The Grove stage was used for the tickets a while back. Likewise, the cover art for this mix is also watermarked with one of his pieces. So for me coming to Shambhala Music Festival is also a visit with my family in nearby Nelson, BC. In that way, I am also "returning" home.

Shambhala is an interesting name to choose for a festival. As I understand it, there is the teaching of the Bodhisattva, or enlightened humans who are compassionate, generous and patient. Because of these traits, they have earned the right to escape the repetitive bonds of reincarnation to ascend to Shambhala. But instead of enjoying the fruits of their labors in that mythological place, they choose to "return" to the earth and help the rest of us become enlightened. Simply put, the idea of going to a heavenly party was a major theme when the festival was first named. Therefore, "The Return from Shambhala" is really a return from heaven.

Putting this mix together was a real joy for me as I prefer music that is emotional, genuine and cerebral. This track selection was curated to create a long, slow burn right through to the end. Often this type of programming is used for a warm up set or an introverted musical exploration going deep into the night. But this isn't an opening set. Because I went with bass heavy, ethereal and slightly psychedelic music, I envisioned this mix for the smooth journey home after the festival.

Yoseff Samchuk 6 - The Return From Shambhala - June 14, 2023

I called this mix "Beneath" because it really gets into that underground feel that is so special to the rave community. There are no commercial elements here, just solid underground music.

One of the most enjoyable things about dance music for me has got to be playing those three to five hour extended sets. Usually, it takes a good 45 minutes for the dancefloor to get warmed up and get a feel for any DJ. During a longer set, the good stuff starts in the second hour. That's when you can get into some interesting, subtle and emotional music, taking people to these special places they're never been, or didn't know they needed to go. It's really wonderful when a DJ is willing to take these risks and share unusual music with the dancers.

A good DJ can also strip everything down to the raw elements of dance music, working with simple yet powerful melodies, slowly massaging excitement out of basslines and percussive tracks. In this sensitive place, every new high hat and transition becomes meaningful and precious. That's what this mix is about. There are no hijinks or flashy popular remixes, it's just about the underground dancefloor. My indulgence was that the dancers are all warmed up and everyone is at rapt attention. Now the real music begins! I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did when mixing it.

Back2Bassics was a three-day festival tucked away in the woods of the lower mainland of British Columbia, Canada. The plan is to make this party an annual tradition and I was excited to be invited to play the first one. Back2Bassics was setup like an old school rave. The location was only given out on the day of, the camp site was by a beautiful river, and there were loads of BC DJs booked. Unfortunately, I got Covid and was unable to play! This was one of two gigs at the end of August and beginning of September that I had to cancel while I rested up.

There used to be a club night in Victoria, BC in the early 90's put on by Noble House that was also called "Back2Bassics," and later just "Basics." I think the name of the festival was to recognize that. I had a couple of sets booked, one for the night and another for during the day. I don't usually decide what to play beforehand, I always have a number of directions which I can go in. However, this mix is some of the music I hoped I would get around to playing during the night. I have been playing a lot of house and techno these days, but when feeling out the night ahead of time I was attracted to the more underground side of percussion-driven and melodic breaks. 

When the party-goers came back to civilization and told me about how it went, I heard that the old-school DJ's had also brought out their breaks, even the house DJs. Some even went back to the past and dropped in some early 90's breaks. Over the years I have found that music and the selection of music can be magical. There was no overall theme to the party that selected DJ's who were going to play a certain genre, and unwittingly I would have fit in with the way the music flowed throughout the festival. 

If people are interested in hearing more, I'll post the rest of the music I might have played that night. I hope you enjoy this taste of what could have been, and I'm looking forward to seeing you at Back2Bassics for next year!

Yoseff Samchuk 8 - @Back2Bassics - Sept 9, 2023

This mini mix is exclusively from Matt Laws' body of music. Matt is best known from his project Binary Finary. Their hit trance song "1998" topped the pop charts in the UK and Europe, and had numerous dance remixes and re-iterations that were played at raves worldwide. I remember being at a party with UK DJs in '99, and I heard it played 5 times! Paul Van Dyk actually did a mashup of two of the remixes, giving the happy ravers nearly 20 minutes of 1998 at peak hour.

Like any solid producer, Matt has made a ton of other music over the years, delving into genres such as chillout, breaks, drum & bass and glitch. For this mix I showcased his progressive breaks. The careful listener will quickly recognize that in a genre full of simple pre-set drum loops, he has produced his own percussion from scratch. His inspiration was tribal from around the world, breaks, electro and other sources, giving his music a crazy level of originality. These are timeless songs, music that excited and enchanted me right from the first listen.

Yoseff Samchuk 9 - Music for Mars - Nov 28, 2023

Where I live in British Columbia, Canada, there's not much sun for most of the year. So when summer does come along, everyone drops whatever they were doing and heads outdoors. Each year I set aside some music to play in the sunny summer months. Regardless of the genre, there's always been healing summer music with a fuzzy bassline, tropical noises and tribal percussion that makes me feel warm and a little bit lazy. This is the music I like to play at a daytime festival, dancing at the beach or a pool party. While you listen, try to imagine summers on the west coast of North America with the Pacific Ocean at your feet.

While I ended up cancelling the gig because I got Covid, thanks to Elio Agvaz for booking me, and I hope to make it up and come play Vancouver and Odd Thursdays soon!

This mix is the music I played at Saturday Evening Social on December 16, 2023. When bringing this music together, I was attracted to the unusual basslines in some of these tracks, and so I put them into in one rolling mix. In my opinion, these are some of today's artists who are producing progressive house at its finest. Something really special about this kind of music is that after the warm up, every track feels like it's going to be the last song of the evening.

This was the first time I was booked to play for Footwork Entertainment of Vancouver Island Canada. A lot of good shows have been done by them, and they have really fostered a space for community in Victoria. I had heard that a lot of older people come out to these things, and true to reputation there were people aged 30-40 & up, dancing alongside the younger crowd. I saw many people out that I haven't seen in years.

This night was at Hermann's Night Club in Victoria, BC. Originally planned to be a two room event, it was soon expanded to three rooms. Footwork brings in world-class DJs, and this event had Canada's own two-time Juno award nominee MC Flipside. I was playing in the other room when Flipside went on, but I was able to catch the second half of his set, which was stompy and vocal tech house. I always try to play something different than the other rooms, hence the harder, melodic progressive on this mix. Enjoy!

I wanted to imbue this mix with subtlety, but like most things I do musically it still teeters on the edge of epicness. It begins with a few ambient house tracks from Forty Cats, and then rises up in layers creating a long, slow burn all the way through to the end. This DJ mix is a teaser of what's to come in Nutopian dance. A journey from where progressive is today to where it's is poised to take off. It's truly music without borders.

I originally started out playing Goa Trance in the mid 90's before it was renamed Psy Trance. I have played a lot of progressive over my career, but I will always love Psy Trance. This mix is all new Psy music from the last few years, with it's characteristic high tempo and refined shuddering basslines, but it's not like any psy like we have heard before. There's a liberal use of Juno keyboards rattling out simple progressive melodies, while retro-ethereal, Enya-like gated vocals float over raw acid house riffs. It's reminiscent of 90's trance, but the artists I picked for this mix have shied away from the unbridled exuberance of the 90's. It's thoroughly modern music, and yet it gives a powerful nostalgic feeling without the dated in-your-face vibe of older trance music. It's impossible to go backwards musically, but when you put a new twist on things we can revisit the classic sounds and times we loved.

I have to comment on the acid lines, which for me are the best part of this mix. Here the grimey acid sounds aren't polished at all, and so they overpower the rest of the more refined noises like a dirty shirt. As you may know, acid was originally made with the all-important Roland TB 303, which became the defining sound of the harder dance music in the early rave scene. Acid house, acid techno and for a time even some breaks and progressive have all had these gritty 303 noises. In the 90's I used to say that 303 is my life, and all I can say now is wait for it to come in!

Yoseff Samchuk 13 - Psyclick - Feb 2024

There's a special place in Canada known as "Mile Zero." It is the start of the #1 Highway that goes coast-to-coast, from the Pacific to the Atlantic. It's located right here in Victoria, BC where I live. There's a beautiful set of cliffs that's over a kilometre long, in James Bay by the water, basically a few blocks from Downtown Victoria. For decades people have been doing free, summertime parties at the beach on the bottom of the cliffs. Because the speakers are pointed out facing the water, these parties can happen close to the centre of the city without any noise complaints.

I played a spectacular show with Mylo Wiger (DJ Mylove) and his crew in May of this year. There was a drizzle of rain during the day, luckily it stopped and the party took off. Thanks to Mylo for having me out. 

This mix is the warm, sunny music I like to play at outdoor summer events, with lots of vocals, melodies and fuzzy basslines. I originally had completely different plans for the music that evening, but when I got there this felt really right for the moment. Enjoy!

Yoseff Samchuk 14 - Mile Zero - May 25th, 2024

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, there was a genre called techno. I remember going to see all the Detroit greats, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins, and many more. I love the legendary music they made. The tracks had incredible melodies and when DJing they layered with a hands-on mixing style. Dance genres change so much over the years, and the old adage is true, the only thing that is consistent in life is change. Some of today's techno is almost unrecognizable compared to classic "Detroit" techno, but Detroit melodies never really went away. Some musical elements will always come back again, similar but changed. As new music gets mixed with elements of other genres, what's old is new again. 

In the 90's I played a lot of trance and progressive, which originally came from the original techno of the early 90's. But this isn't the first time I have mixed techno with a melodic quality. Just after y2k I transitioned into a new genre we called tech trance. Sasha used to call it trance with a small "t." These days when you look through the charts from back then, it's hard to sort out, as all that music has been put in the classic trance or progressive house categories, but tech trance was originally a distinct genre onto itself. In 2004 I did a track with Seed called Chlorine Shots" that was a good example of tech trance or progressive house. Most dance music was way faster back then, but there are other differences between the old 90's techno, 2000's tech trance and the 2020's melodic techno. Detroit was always very lush compared to the restrained tech trance. Today's melodic tech house and techno swings from minimalism to epic sounds. There's less use of the house "cats and boots," and it usually has that mighty 808 kick. This DJ mix is modern melodic techno and tech trance, a kind of homage to the old school. Techno has been around from the beginning of dance music, and it will endure. I got three turntables going for this mix, something that techno really lends itself to. Enjoy!

The shrine of the Silver Star is in the desert under the ineffable night sky. An oasis upon the camel's trek, she is sought by many a lost sojourner. This is the temple not built by hands, waxing and waning with the shifting sands. The Priestess is a musical journey of love that takes us from the depths of our hearts to the arcane crown above.

"The Priestess" is a 25 minute mini-mix comprised of all new, mostly unreleased and unmastered music. The feeling of this mix takes me back to the late 90's, I did an ambient night at Java Coffeehouse in Victoria, BC, Canada with Dub Gnostic and Sabrina Dzugalo-Foldi. But there were previous ambient nights at Java. In the early 90's there was a night called Gravity by DJ's Quentin and Nicole. Then in the mid 90's there was a show called Zero Gravity by DJ's Joshua Kitakaze and Adam Hendrickson. We were continuing the unbroken line of succession of Sunday night Ambient music at Java.

This mix is intended for listening, chillout or meditation. These are mostly unmastered tracks, revealing the raw and unedited sound directly from the original recordings. While mastering is usually a must for any genre, too much post-production mastering can sterilize music. This mix is a daytime set I played at a secret beach party on the fall Equinox in Victoria, BC on September 21st, 2014. Victoria is located on Vancouver Island in the west coast of Canada. It can have summer weather well into fall, and each year Victoria brags to the rest of snowy Canada because the flowers bloom here when it's still winter everywhere else! 

It was a really special event on a sunny day, and everyone there knew that this was probably the last outdoor party of the year. Thank you to Transmute and Sebastian Garcia for having me out to play, and I hope you enjoy the last drops of sunshine of 2024!

This mix is inspired by taking the dancer "beneath". For me it really gets into that underground feel that is so special to the rave community. There are no commercial elements here, just solid underground music.

One of the most enjoyable things about dance music for me has got to be playing those three to five hour extended sets. Usually, it takes a good 45 minutes for the dancefloor to get warmed up and get a feel for any DJ. During a longer set, the good stuff starts to pick up in the second hour. That's when you can get into some interesting, subtle and emotional music, taking people to these special places they're never been, or didn't know they needed to go. It's really wonderful when a DJ is willing to take these risks and share unusual music with the dancers.

A good DJ can also strip everything down to the raw elements of dance music, working with simple yet powerful melodies, slowly massaging excitement out of basslines and percussive tracks. In this sensitive place, every new high hat and transition becomes meaningful and precious. That's what this mix is about. There are no hijinks or flashy popular remixes, it's just about the underground dancefloor. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did when mixing it.

Decoded Magazine Mix of the Month October Submission – DJ Yoseff Samchuk

Yoseff's music is laden with enchanting melodies, sophisticated percussion and heavy bass. Moving and emotional, his sound spans from the dizzying heights of techno to the very depths of house and progressive. Known for five hour epic sets, his music is captivating, timeless and enduring.

He has held simultaneous residencies across Canada at legendary clubs such as Hush and The Limit in Victoria, Sonar in Gastown Vancouver and The Bassmint in Toronto. He has also played at Burningman, Noble House Events, Victoria Electronic Music Festival and Shambhala Music Festival.

His current project is called The Waters of Creation, a dance, chillout and ambient collaboration with Matt Laws (Binary Finary). Together they are bringing together a community of artists from around the world to work under the same banner - The Waters of Creation.

Yoseff has played alongside Timo Maas (Silver Planet), Taylor (Platipus Records), Jimmy Van M (Bedrock, Balance Promotion Group), Chris Fortier (Balance Promotion Group), Eddie Richards (Sweatbox Records, End Recordings), Jay Tripwire (Mosaic, Witching Hour, Nordic Trax), Rennie Foster (RF Recordings),  Dick Trevor (Bedrock), John Creamer (NY Lover Records), Max Graham (Hope, Platipus) and Christopher Lawrence (Pharmacy Music, Hook Recordings). 

He has also played with D.A.V.E. The Drummer (Hydraulix, Apex Recordings), Pascal F.E.O.S. (Eye Q, Harthouse, Tronic, Level Non Zero), John Kelly (Moontribe, Moonshine), Treavor Moontribe and Brad Moontribe.
