When composer Steve Peach was contacted by the producers of the Aussie film Alex and Eve about composing the soundtrack soundtrack for the movie, he didn’t quite know the breadth of the project. Alex and Eve is a multi-cultural romantic comedy, set in Sydney. It was obvious from the outset that the film would need musical influences from both the Greek and Arabic traditions, some contemporary scoring, and a couple of feature songs, but it ended up being so much more than that.

By the end of the film, the score included a dizzying array of instruments, including traditional instruments such as the bouzouki and the oud (a traditional Arabic lute), piano accordion, darbuka, mandolin, guitar, kemence (and Arabic string instrument), ney (a wood flute), orchestral strings, piano, sitar, saxophone, qanun (a middle eastern zither), shahrazad, as well as numerous synthesizers.

Most of the instruments on the soundtrack were composed, performed and recorded by Steve himself, with some help from a couple of session musicians and some excellent sound libraries by Sonokinetic. Some of the other performers on the album include renowned dance music diva Carlotta Chadwick who featured in the key song “Send My Love”, and x-factor stars Brothers 3 who performed the end credits song Looking For Love, which incidentally was co-written by Alex and Eve producer Murray Fahey.

The soundtrack ended up with around 45 minutes of original music, a cover version of a 1935 song by bouzouki legend Markos Vamvakaris (“Fragosiriani”), and a new original arrangement of the traditional Greek song “Samiotisa”, which was brought to international fame by Nana Mouskouri.

Alex and Eve (The Soundtrack) weaves a rich tapestry of cultural influences and modern film scoring, immersing you in the characters journeys and their diverse musical traditions. Much like the movie Alex and Eve, the soundtrack itself is a melting pot of traditional and modern influences, which celebrates both the common ground and the unique differences that make Sydney such an interesting place.
