1.11.25 : INQUIRY in SF : 31AT –Torie's Bday/Curiosity Fundy! w. Bartek, KAiPORA & the Inquiry Gang

It's been a hot minute since I've put a F|S mix out! But as the weather gets warmer, pandemic restrictions are lifting, & there's finally a sense of optimism and genuine stoke about the future in the air, I've been finding myself loving the groovy tunes of house/disco/throwbacks & the like. 

This mix is a collection of tracks intended to create joy – listen while you're hanging out with friends, enjoying the sunshine, starting your day, or just want to get a good dance in. Here's to summer, to returning to dancefloors, and to that moment of pure bliss when you're lost in the sound. Enjoy!

Forms | States 07 - Torie [Summer Grooves]

I had the absolute pleasure of opening up the floor for KiNK's live set – one of my long-time favorite artists, and a true magician in his craft – and Galen of Sunset Soundsystem. Dive into 2 hours of minimal, classic, groovy house tunes and onwards... 

It was an early August night at Public Works SF, my first time performing on the main stage at PW & playing on the V10 mixer. I wanted my sound & energy to grow with the crowd, to bring excitement to the dancefloor as people filled in... to prepare for what was an incredible night of music from the artists to follow. 

This gig was a last-minute add-on for me as I filled in for a friend & I couldn't have been more honored to step into her shoes for this moment. It was also the same week that the music community lost two house music legends - K-HAND and Paul Johnson - so I felt it was only fitting to pay my respects with a few of their tracks as well.

I decided to shake things up and start 2022 with something fresh and surprising — playing a breaks / left field set on the Dusty Rhino at It's A New Day + Breakfast Of Champions Block Party 2022. It felt like the perfect place to try something new as the history of the Rhino and Cowboys sound has so much breaks in it… it was time for me to explore a new genre. 

I've played on the Rhino for the last few years at BOC and it's always been home & family for me. It meant the world for me to be back here surrounded by so many incredible people and to be reminded how much I love this community. Truly a pleasure. 

This was SO MUCH FUN and I can't wait to bring more breaks into 2022! ENJOY⚡️

Here's my opening set from our @desertheartsblack x @inquirycollective party at Public Works in December 2021 - minimal trippy techno grooves to kick off the night. This show was a long time coming as the first date got cancelled because of COVID, so there was lots of energy & excitement about finally getting this fam together and there was sooo much magic in the air. 

I loved this set - some of my favorite techno tunes as of late 🖤 Enjoy!

Torie - Live at Desert Hearts Black x Inquiry [opening set | Dec 2021]

for our @icarusartcar fundraiser at Monarch SF in April 2022, our resident DJs each chose a friend to b2b with - so i grabbed my east coast sista @itsmekatiemarie & we teamed up for this new duo project we're working on that we've aptly named // chaos theory // 

full transparency, as is par for course: i threw katie into the fire a bit when i told her i'd like to play *very fast techno and sum breaks sitting around 128-145 bpm* & she was also new to the v10 mixer (what a learning curve that damn thing is). the first few track transitions here are messy, no doubt - i was showing her how to use the mixer on the fly, we were getting into our groove, and, well, you know how chaos can go in a packed club w a lot of loud noises. but that's the fun of it, right? 

regardless - once we got into it, we damn went, and we piloted the shit out of that spaceship. 

enjoy some minimal house, techno, acid techno, & breaks + left-field garage soundin' stuff. strap in for a helluva ride cuz this one's a damn adventure with a helluva groove.

Quite literally, we're on a boat - a Desert Hearts boat party cruising around the San Francisco Bay, to be exact 🚢 

Torie and Jessica took to the rooftop deck to finish out the month of June with an hour of grooves – house, disco, breakbeats, techno, and a little bit of everything in between.  Thanks to DJ Dials & the Desert Hearts crew for having us out. This was a blast n' a half 🔊

Torie b2b Jessica - Live at Desert Hearts Boat Party, SF

I was stoked to return to Northern Nights Music Festival for my second year playing – I threw down a Friday night set at the Submerged Sessions stage for an hour of trippy vocals, rolling baselines, house, minimal, techno n' breaks. This was quite fun to hear these tracks blasting out on a proper Danley soundsystem (thanks, Jobi!!) – it's one of my fav sets I've played in awhile. Thanks to everyone who joined 💜

Torie - Live at Northern Nights: Submerged Sessions

We cruised to the trash fence for a Tuesday morning sunrise cruise on the @dusty-rhino-1 - a blissful adventure to watch the sun peak over the mountains in the Black Rock desert (and play music to the Burning Man marathon runners, lol)with a gathering of some of my favorite people.

Playing sunrise on an art car is always one of the most unique experiences I think you can create on playa – this was an absolutely surreal morning & I am so grateful. 

Hope you enjoy this set as much as I did playing it (and reliving it over and over in my head).

Envision Set 2023

A pleasure and an honor to join Moontribe for the October edition of FMG out in the desert. It was my first time playing (talk about nerves, lol) after attending and learning so much from the MT crew for years. Their 30-year history has had a huge influence on me - my sound, my musical path, the events I throw - in countless ways and I was grateful to join this lineup for a Halloween celebration.

I haven’t released a set in a while but I really played a lot of my current favorite music and some really firm new directions / sounds for me - a mix of broken beat and uk influences, often switching from melodic and vibey to bass-y and spattered with choppy vocals throughout.

I'm ecstatic to present the first of my new mix series, Forms | States. With Forms | States, I hope to take you on a refreshing journey through sound, combining newfound tracks and old favorites to describe the essence of a feeling & the creation of a state of mind. 

Music takes the form – the state – in which you interpret it. It has played such a significant part in my life, and I hope that I can provide you with one piece of that impact. 

Forms | States 01 tethers the line between light and dark, upbeat and mellow. It drives forward with a strong bassline and balances out with those ever-loved high-hats. This is my exploration into a darker side of tech house.

Playing the Fisher block party at The Great Northern was arguably one of the funnest sets I've played yet. To the amazing friends who came to support, the lively crowd that kept the dancefloor grooving, and to everyone who gave their energy and support throughout – THANK YOU. This was SO MUCH FUN. Enjoy an hour of bass-heavy, booty bumpin', fun-lovin' bass and tech house for your listening pleasure.

Wow, wow, wow. This was the first time I've had the pleasure of playing the basement at 1015, and what an experience that was. I'm so honored to share a lineup with the mega-talented Maya Jane Coles. Here's an hour of some of my favorite sounds right now: some groovy, darker tech house and dives into a heavier techno side too. I hope it moves you as much as it moved me – enjoy ~

As San Francisco heads into a "shelter in place" lockdown for the next few weeks, I've found myself with ample time to explore more tunes I don't get to play out often. I love liquid drum n' bass in the mornings, and haven't played this genre in awhile, so this was a fun way to dive back into things.

This is a snippet of a live stream I tested out on my Facebook page this morning – a wonderful 40 minutes of liquid that really helped get me through this weird Monday.

Torie – Liquid DnB Test Run [Quarantunes Live Stream Set]

To be honest: quarantine has been a challenge. I've found myself going back and forth about whether I'm feeling "musical" on any particular day, struggling to find new things that inspire me, and using the many emotions this pandemic has brought up to explore new sounds and tell my story in different ways. 

But it's been positive in an unexpected way, too. I've rediscovered my love for deeper, minimal sounds and the simplicity and power that exists within them.

If you've known me personally or musically at all, you probably know my deep love for @desert-hearts-records. This community has played a huge impact on my musical development and is truly a second home to me. I've been hoping to play a DH event for awhile now, and had the incredible opportunity to open up their livestream for our @inquiry-records takeover in September.

Dive into 1.5 hours of.. well.. a bit of all of my favorite things. Deep and minimal, trippy and tribal, jackin' tech house, old school, groovy and melodic – an adventure through some of the sounds I'm loving right now. Enjoy 💓

Every year, our @inquiry-records family throws a desert renegade-style festival with a small group of friends out in the Mojave – we call it Curiosity. This year, since we couldn't gather in person, we threw a virtual version instead – and called it "Spuriosity". 

Here's my set – a journey through darker sounds, from deep house and minimal sounds to heavier basslines, trippy techno, and a bit of everything in-between. Close your eyes, take a listen, and imagine it's 3am on a dusty dancefloor in the middle of the desert with me...

Torie’s sound is multifaceted, to say the least. 

With a global upbringing, roots in San Francisco, (a brief bounce to San Diego), & a current base BACK IN THE BAY!, she has been curating sonic adventures for almost a decade. 

She interweaves elements of *BREAKS!*, house, minimal, dark & driving techno, garage, acid, soulful vocals, soft melodies (& every now and then, some drum & bass)... all to share a story through sound. 

She believes in the power of groove, always playing with one goal in mind: to bring newfound life to the dancefloor.  

– (she lives by the ethos of "i'm just here to play music & do cool shit with my friends").  

As a core lead of Inquiry Collective, artist with Burning Man art cars ICARUS and Dusty Rhino, a resident DJ of You’re Welcome, and a co-founder of Dance With Haha, Torie draws inspiration from the dusty plains of the playa, the curious explorations of the Mojave desert, the underground dancefloors of SF, & the interstellar endeavors of ICARUS & its motley crew.
