Sunny Side of the Moon Mix by YOUCANCALLMEOLIVER

Focusing on the legacy and influence of disco music on club culture and its rebirth in house music, YOUCANCALLMEOLIVER blends genre-defining classics like Donna Summers’ “I feel love” and Vitalic’s “Poison Lips” with soon-to-be-classics by nu-disco artists such as Chromeo and Pomo or his Canadian colleagues ThisCoTech, as well as occasional rare gems from his vinyl record collection that will surely surprise longtime lovers of the genre. 

The set, which was recorded just in time with Spring’s arrival in 2017 using two turntables and Ableton routed into a 4-channel mixer, is typical for YOUCANCALLMEOLIVER’s DJing style, defined by lengthy passages of groovy, deep records, interrupted by occasional sparks of humor in the form of lightheaded tunes.

YOUCANCALLMEOLIVER (real name JP Oliver Viol), who is based in Berlin and Vienna, produces electronic music with a jazzy touch and heavy use of sampled acoustic instruments, certainly influenced by other producers from Berlin such as Moderat or Siriusmo, though he considers his works “minimal”. It’s the type of music that has unexpected arrangements, which start and end differently - compositions with a melancholic mood carried by captivating jazzy lead melodies and strong club grooves with a heavy focus on sound design an aural aesthetics.

Of his latest EP the artist says: “While producing music, I focus more on the feelings I want to evoke in the listener, rather than on genres, using whatever tools the individual song might need. People who stick with me for longer stay because they keep coming back for a certain mood. The four-track EP "Antics" is the successful result of a long process of searching and defining my own musical language - production tools and compositional techniques. The works on the “Antics” EP can be considered laying foundations for the future of my vision and sound - my musical DNA in a nutshell.”

The opening track STEP UP is build around a charismatic bass melody, which oscillates and warps in sound and spectrum like an aural chameleon on a slow-paced walk through a harmonic jungle spread out over a strong beat foundation, culminating in a surprising, energetic and uplifting end.

The cryptically titled second track C+S+M, has a long buildup with sophisticated chord progressions spinning through arpeggios leading up to a juicy introduction of the strong bass foundation and a following lead synth solo on top, making it a relaxed yet groovy musical journey.

Although being set in a classic house-music tempo of 125bpm and built around a dancefloor beat, “DAB OR DIP” breaks archetypical patterns with its dubby bassline and glitchy keys. The track has a lengthy break in the middle, meant to calm down the exuberant energy of the choruses, balancing the funky mood with a melancholic one. This track blends perfectly into dj sets with house music.

The final and closing track on the “Antics” EP - VISION QUEST, is a bass-heavy oriental trap composition, which introduces chopped up vocal samples and the zither instrument, a central-european rendition of the old greek instrument “cithara” – the predecessor of the modern guitar. Harmonic layers and solos played on the instrument set the mysterious tone of the song, seemingly drawing the listener into sonic depths culminating with a heavy drum finale symbolizing the end of a “vision quest ritual” as practiced by indigenous peoples around the world.

What I’m interested in is recontextualization of pop music in a post-club frame. The alienation of pop culture references might lead to a new understanding of metalevels thereof.

YOUCANCALLMEO is a classically trained music producer, sound designer & DJ based in Berlin, Paris & Vienna. He's the co-founder of the vinyl house music label Small Great Things and runs his own creative agency BRU BRU BRU BRU Media. Playing and composing since the age of four, he has written music for numerous theater productions and dance performances as well as for awarded short films and video productions. His international activity has taken him on tour around Europe, the Americas and to remote destinations in Asia frequently.

When performing, YOUCANCALLMEO loves spinning vinyl records from his extensive collection and always brings in contemporary house tunes with an eclectic and groovy touch as well. Live performances often feature drum machines, synthesizers and string instrument arrangements.

Oliver Viol has trained in sound design during his academic years studying Computer-music and Media Composition and refrains from using pre-made loops, crafting his own samples and making use of field recordings to create unique sounds that match his musical language and suit every track he works on.
