My 1st encounter with Oldschool Rap and Electro in 1995 was bought at the Wildstyle Shop in Berlin on a hilarious Wochenendticket ride, getting all kicked out of the train in the middle of nowhere around Neubrandenburg in pitch black darkness.

Live at Underground Resolution in the legendary small venue, or better: youth club, Phoenix, Guestrow, Mecklenburg. Camouflage net, strobe light, fog. DJ Ron is still active today. Known also as Ron Albrecht, he was one of the main guys musically educating the people of Schwerin, basically the whole countryside of Mecklenburg, as a co-founder of one of the finest and 20 years long lasting mainstays Gerberei as well as the record store Easytraxx. Underground Resolution was a DJ collective of enthusiasts for Alvin Toffler, Detroit Electronic Music and obviously and still today a deep appreciation for Underground Resistance.      

Phoenix was a place for many in the city to test out musical concepts and ideas in the 90ies, such as regular Hip Hop jams from the local DAK crew with guests from Berlin, who, after the jam, left a massive trail of tags on their way to the train station. A breaking news to that was found on the Monday title page of the local newspaper.

A tape which has been rinsed through every available tape deck speaker around since 1997 and it is blasting through car tape decks up until today. It was either bought at Da Source or Groove City in Hamburg, Germany, and lead to the purchase of nearly every single record on this tape, basically getting some of us into buying our own Technics 1210 MKII at the end of the day. It is a true artifact of who we were (are) and how a circle of friends defined their style in language, in motion, in clothing and in overall Hip Hop culture in a small town in north east Germany. These tapes were major influences at that time, offering a rare and desired glimpse into hidden corners of music.

About two years ago I made Part 1 which put the Rap side of the label into focus. Finally I found the time to finish Part 2 with a selection of all those rediscovered oddities and new signings Stones Throw came up throughout the years. Of course there is a loooot more which did not find a place in this second part though you may see my love for guys like Captain Funkaho, James Pants or Dam Funk. The mix starts of off with some contributions from the 2002 compilation from Peanut Butter Wolf´Jukebox 45 with a more funk and rock attitude around the millenial years, some Yesterdays New Quintet, some sneaky disco from Gary Davis, several tracks from James Pants´ overall fantastic album "Welcome", switching over to some pop and synth from Boardwalk and Chrome Canyon. Second half of the mix clearly highlights Dam Funk, who - for me personally - came outta nowhere in 2008/2009. He even recorded an album with teenage year hero Snoop as 7 Days Of Funk which is just a perfect combination of modern funk and Westcoast Rap. The mix closes with oldschool electro and wavy tunes from Arabian Prince aka Professor X who was a part of early N.W.A. in the end of the eighties and psychedelic electronic music producer Bruce Haack. After finishing the recording I discovered that the great Minimal Wave compilations were forgotten so it feels like a Part 3 may be come up some day.

Blender – Neon Transmission 0001

Blender was earning a low key reputation around Hamburg before heading out to Berlin and flanking our recent Dreams Of Neon events with warm-up and closing sets. He is a musical director for Hamburg's own TISSUE Magazine, combining dedicated monthly digital mixtapes with editorial design from within the magazine's circle. Besides being a constant figure in the Dreams Of Neon nights, Blender is also a resident of Humboldthain Club and he recently started his own night called Fieber at Zur Klappe in Berlin. Enjoy the mix, you should have no trouble listening to it on repeat.
