Celebrating 100 years of the Youghal Pipe Band “Keep It Going” is the brand new four-part radio documentary coming your way on Community Radio Youghal.

Tracing the origins of the band from 1914 , this four part documentary recounts the bands trials and tribulations in starting a pipe band in a garrison town.In what will be fascinating listening for historians, music lovers and anyone with an association with Youghal.

Keep it Going producer and presenter Eileen McCarthy Thompson spent a number of months getting to know both band members and the extended McCarthy family whose roots are firmly planted on Youghal’s Cork Hill.

Capturing the Youghal Pipe Band’s centenary concert on March 14th at Youghal GAA Hall Eileen also followed the band from Cork Hill in Youghal to Glasgow Green in Scotland for the World Pipe Band Championships 2014.

The documentary takes you to the band room and homes of family members to hear stories of old and witness the highs and lows of keeping the 100 year old pipe band going in the 21st century century, while also looking at the pipe bands competition history and army influence that helped to raise the bands standards.

“I really wanted this documentary to be almost a fly on the wall style where the listener gets to experience the life of the Youghal Pipe Band as it happens. I take the listener with me to discover the bands past and more importantly who they are today. Overall this is the story of the ever evolving Youghal Pipe Band, with tears and lots of laughter from a family and group whose dedication and pride ensures the bands future” says McCarthy Thompson.

This is part 1 of the 4 part series which began on Wednesday the 5th November at 7:30pm.
