The project aims at publishing the Artist’s first solo album consisting of three
tracks inspired by the October 17 th revolution in Lebanon. Following a long
period of despair and disappointment, the night of October 17 th offered a lot of
surprises and excitement. For the first time in Lebanon, we lived a moment of
spontaneity that united us all for one demand: Good Living.
A few months after its inception, I try to gather scenes from the first nights of
the revolution and remember this feeling. The songs presented in the album
are based on audio clips from videos I filmed during the protests, in addition
to voices and music from the streets that lived in uprisings during the same
period of the Beirut uprising, such as Iraq and Chile; the sound of fire, the
saxophone playing during clashes in Chile, bouzouki and percussion
instruments, in addition to the my voice as a singer.
After five months of protesting on the streets, the COVID19 pandemic locked
us in our homes and interrupted the uprising’s momentum. A feeling of
loneliness haunted me during this isolation and I began to recall sounds,
pictures, and events from the uprising that gave me energy to continue. Here I
started working on the first song of this trilogy, “The Boy of October 17”
This trilogy will pass through three phases, reflecting three cases that we have
experienced during the course of the uprising:
First: Euphoria – a lot of daydreaming
Second: Fear that this dream will stop
Third: Recession

The Dwarfs of East Agouza is a trio from Cairo, Egypt, featuring Maurice Louca (Alif, Bikya), Sam Shalabi (Land of Kush, Shalabi Effect) and Alan Bishop (Sun City Girls, The Invisible Hands, Alvarius B.).

Born during 2012 when the three were living in the same apartment building in Cairo’s Agouza district, the trio’s instrumental improvisation-based explorations are propelled by Louca’s North African percussion loops and shimmering keys, Shalabi’s West African tinged free jazz guitar and grounded by Bishop’s driving Krautrock-style acoustic bass.

Following many a late night jam session, the band recorded hours of material during a three-day studio run in April 2014. After compiling and mixing the album in Montreal’s Break Glass studio in July 2015, the refined result will be released as a double-album titled Bes via Nawa Recordings (NAWA005) on 2xLP, 2xCD and DL on 29 April 2016.

Named after the Ancient Egyptian dwarf deity who was worshiped as the defender of all things good and enemy of all that is bad, Bes captures the trio on a hypnotic yet unpredictable journey. From the the lilt of four-minute ethiopian tinged Resinance to the 30-minute free-form epic Museum of Stranglers, the album skirts the outer limits of a psychedelic soundtrack to a North African road trip.

Bes by The Dwarfs of East Agouza will be available on CD, black & limited edition coloured 12” vinyl LP and download, including Mastered for iTunes and lossless high-definition 24-bit/96kHz audio files.

The album artwork features a reproduction of an ancient Egyptian carving of the dwarf god Bes, painted by Egyptian artist Raafat Al-Kordy, designed by Iraqi-Palestinian graphic designer and illustrator Sara Sukhun.

Youmna Saba is a musician and musicologist who started her musical career in 2006 and has released four albums to this day (Arb’een (40), 2017, Njoum, 2014, Hal Bint Aabalha Tghanni, 2011, Min Aafsh el Beit, 2008). 

She is currently working on a research project that investigates the relationship between the art of the qasida (a musical form that is based on the vocal improvisation of classical Arabic poetry texts) and electronic and electro-acoustic treatments. 

Youmna has collaborated with many musicians of different musical backgrounds: Mike Cooper (GB), Jean Marc Montera (FR), Kyungso Park (SK), Piotr Kurek (PL), among others. She has taken part in international programs and residencies: Hwaeom Spiritual Music Residency (South Korea, September 2017), Sound Development City (Spain, Morocco, 2016), Gyeonggi Creation Center (South Korea, 2013), OneBeat (USA, 2012) and at La Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris as of January 2020. 

Youmna holds a master’s degree in Musicology, focusing mainly on the parallels between classical Arabic music and Arabic visual art.
