Primer is the alias and creative project of vocalist/producer Alyssa Midcalf. Originally from Palm Springs, California she now lives and creates music in Detroit, MI.

Midcalf, who gained some attention as one half of the duo Parts, makes her introduction as Primer with the single Anesthetized on the Young Heavy Souls label. 

“The song was written after the 2016 election and definitely has a political edge.” Unlike traditional protest songs, Anesthetized is deeply personal, and influenced by a “sense of helplessness.” Although the emotion was always there, the lyrics were not finished until a few days before recording. “I wanted to capture the feeling of having no control, that feeling that makes you want to lash out” she says when speaking on the song’s lyrics.
