Psyché's debut single is due out this May. Drop a needle on their debut double-sider and you'll see visions, or rather Mediterranean visions, be they of waves of heat shimmering above dunes of sand, or of women dancing around a bonfire on a rocky plain, or of bushy cliffs overlooking emerald-green and turquoise sea.

The name Psyché is of course ancient Greek for ‘soul’ or ‘mind’, signifying the band’s love of psychedelic funk, but also the wide range of Mediterranean influences that provide an endless source of inspiration for their hypnotic sound and minimalist style. The band members Marcello Giannini, Andrea De Fazio, and Paolo Petrella have been active in the Naples music scene for almost two decades, most notably during the first wave of the new Neapolitan Power movement.

Over the years, they have collaborated on side projects in various genres, before working together as the rhythm section of Nu Genea’s live band. Following their first tour with Nu Genea in 2018, they started Psyché with the intent of exploring more minimalist styles and making music with just a few elements.

A unique combination of psychedelia, groove, and improvisation, the music of Psyché evokes visions of a mythical past, blending centuries-old music traditions and mixing them with modern genres. Like a warm Mediterranean breeze, it travels across lands, seas, and eras, distilling essential rhythms and cosmic pulsations.

On side B of their debut 45, 'Ophis', Psyché delivers a mesmeric blend of African, Balkan, and Turkish rhythms and sounds. Ethereal vocalizations and warm, hypnotic bass lines combine with psychedelic riffs and haunting melodies on guitar to evoke ancient cultures whose spirit slithers like a snake across the dunes of a sun-scorched desert.

We love to support new artists at MIMS and Rupert Cox is no exception. The talented pianist is the latest signing on London's essential Albert's Favourites label, and today they share his beautiful debut single, "Embers".

Rupert is an engaging and versatile pianist whose sound has already reached people through work with China Moses, Judi Jackson, Rhys Lewis, Myele Manzanza and many more.

Citing Blake Mills, Genevieve Artadi and Brad Mehldau as pivotal influences, his solo music covers a huge range, often melancholic, reflective and cerebral but unafraid to play with positivity and joy at times. 

His introduction to the world, "Embers", carries the imprint of artists like Eno and Laraaji, a beguiling, ambient leaning piano exploration, lifted along by sparse percussion, sensitive synthesiser and guitar play.

Albert's Favourites co-founder Adam Scrimshire shared some more background on how the signing came about: "We kind of had a mission this year to see what was possible with the label and the most fulfilling part has unquestionably been seeing the family really grow, and grow through natural connections. Rupert was first introduced to me by Yusuf Ahmed of Qwalia, who came to us through Huw Marc Bennett. This is the dream really, all these personal connections and new friendships. Rupert's album is really special and we're grateful to get to represent it."

The single introduces you to some of Rupert’s rich sonic palette while leaving so much to be discovered. We can't wait to her more from this essential new creator in the London music community.

Layered with that gorgeous echo-laden guitar we’ve grown accustomed to hearing from Pablo, the album, 'La Calle Roja', is a triumph from start to finish. The LP, on a Japanese-style sleeve written in both English and Japanese, features guests such as Lexx, Gigi Masin, Fu and Chee Shimizu. Premiering on YoungOnes is our pick from the LP, ‘Parasol 7pm’. Being big fans of Contours, we are delighted to premiere his brilliant edit of "Mangroves" for Pyramid Project for ADA Records. 

Brought together by ADA label boss, Lasta, Pyramid Project finds Contours in collaboration with some of Kenya's most accomplished musicians, such as drummer Katumba, percussionists Abaki Simba Masta and Inspekta, and pianist Mutoriah. The full EP is released on November 13.

Perfect as an early dancefloor builder as well as in a Global Jazz set, Contours’ understanding of rhythm and tension really brings his edit of "Mangroves" to life.

With the original recording being a dramatic piece of Swahili Jazz, Contours uses the grittier elements of the composition to deliver an edit perfect for a cosmopolitan setting. Maintaining the driving elements of the bassline and rhythm section, the tension of the edit is developed by Contours’ synth work and a minimal choice of Mutoriah's riffs to build a more direct arrangement.
