‘Applying metal sensibilities to acoustic songs’, boy/girl duo Young Peculiar have often been likened to Incubus, and are known for their adventurous, prog-like songs and arrangements. 

The pair began with a shared vision of creating a raw, honest and intricate sound, while still channelling their heavy rock influences. Michael performs melodic and percussive guitar parts with extraordinary dexterity, while Bernadette delivers a powerful yet delicate vocal, with lyrics that are at once captivating, restless and beautifully paradoxical.

Two years after they began, Young Peculiar have released two well-received EPs with a full band line-up, supported Drenge and Zane Lowe, and worked with legendary producer Tony Platt (AC/DC, Bob Marley) on a track for a collaborative EP with Strongroom London and Jack Daniel’s.

For a while, Young Peculiar experimented as a five-piece rock line-up, but in 2014 the decision was made to return to their origins as a two-piece. Bernadette explains the decision: ‘I like the flexibility a duo brings; we have the freedom to work by ourselves, or with different line-ups to achieve new interpretations of our music. We don’t want to be tied down to writing exclusively for the traditional rock line-up anymore.’
