In 1972, a remote convent outside Catania, Sicily, was struck by a sudden earthquake that split the chapel in two. The event was small, barely recorded but the aftermath was stranger than the quake itself. When rescuers arrived, they found the altar buried under rubble, yet the choir loft was untouched.

Every microphone in the chapel had captured singing... a haunting harmony that didn’t match any known liturgical music. The nuns, dazed and half-buried, swore they hadn’t sung a word. The Vatican classified the tapes as miracula sonus -miraculous sound, and quietly sealed them in the archives.

Fifty years later, a collector from Prague uncovered fragments of the same recording encoded onto an unlabeled reel. When the band Mesa Babe acquired and restored the audio during a late-night session, something strange happened. The melody wouldn’t align with any modern key. Reverb bled into the mix like breath; faint Latin phrases surfaced between notes.

As they played the recovered piece live for the first time, the studio lights dimmed... power still on, equipment untouched.... The air felt charged, as if the song itself was pulling the room somewhere else.

“Heaven in Ruin” became their interpretation of that lost hymn:
a reimagining of divine beauty decaying into human sorrow.

Listeners have claimed that if you slow the track to half-speed, a second choir can be heard beneath the main vocals... a choir no one in the band recorded.
