I interviewed Kenny, after our performance, about the issue of fatherlessness from the play. He talked about this experiences.

I asked Kenny, who rehearsed for the younger brother character, Mac, but did not play him in the actual performance, and Jonathan to record this scene from the play, where both brothers, Mac and the older brother meet on the street. The older brother has just made drug deal, and Mac has just been kicked out of school for fighting. In the dialogue that the students developed, this scene contains the most about masculinity and the 'hood'.

This was the first poem I ever read in front of an audience. It was an audience of teens for the Imagine College Summer program where I was teaching "Word" class, a poetry and spoken word class.

Jenny was one of the shyest students during her week of the Imagine College program. In the beginning of the week she told me she would not perform her poem out loud. On the Friday of the showcase she announced to me that she had changed her mind and that she was going to perform it. I found out years later that she created a poetry club in Seaside High.
