Carl Cox, né le 29 juillet 1962 à Oldham (Grand Manchester), est un disc jockey et producteur de musique électronique britannique. This was my first of over 10 Essential Mixes I’ve done, as always recorded live in one take, as was then on 3 vinyl decks. I was a super sub presenter on BBC Radio 1 at the time too, standing in for peak time Friday and Saturday (Pete Tong, Danny Rampling, Seb Fontaine) breaking a newer sound to the UK mixed with my raw house music sentiment, something that’s never left me. Even now with a more modern DJ set up I still play the same, raw, funk, loopy, tough, colourful and soulful in its own way, this was a real defining moment for me, enjoy…

In the beginning, jack had a groove. And thanks to heavyweight house heroes like Harry Romero, that groove is now back. “My love of house came from the culture,” explains Jersey’s finest from his studio headquarters in The Butchashop. Harry, in case you missed the musical memo, is a humble house music legend with classic club cuts like ‘Tania’, ‘Night @ The Black’ and ‘I Go Back’ with Robert Owens under his belt, but really that’s just the tip of the iceberg as his current catalogue will attest.

So what’s his ethos now? Simple! To wave his own flag. “I know what I’m capable of in the studio and behind the decks. Harry 2.0, this is my renaissance! “ He’s had a career that now runs across two decades but also recognizes that “this is a rebirth, not a remix.” It’s also about reaching a new generation with a catalogue that speaks for itself. With many charting successes from his recent releases on Classic, Hot Creations and even a global dancefloor hit on his own label Bambossa for his collaboration track with friend and fellow house legend Louie Vega. His ethos as both a DJ and producer continue to tell the same story, and it’s all about top-quality music.

20 years ago today… 

A throw back to the first time I hosted a live essential mix during my time as a new presenter on my first time doing any radio, which happened to be Radio One!

This was my 3rd essential mix (I’ve done 10 or 11 I think…) 

It captures the craziness of peak back to basics, and the west sound Id championed and helped orchestrated into the UK… 

it’s recorded on 3 vinyl decks, it’s raw and live and as you can see by the picture I was less than sober!

its one of my favourite ever mixes and its legacy and impact to the UK house scene was enormous. 

Its raw and recorded live in one take on 3 technics decks, 

I created loops using 2 copies of tracks layered over the 3rd track playing, as well as double beating to crescendos.

this was made pre efx on mixers, proper house music personified! 

I broke many of these names and tracks into the UK for the first time
via this mix, 

Big up Julian Rolf and mixmag for the support. 

The interview that went with this issue is so ridiculous, its almost unprintable! I was called on my phone from gig to gig to after party to after party for over 24hrs... the interview started serious and ended anything but, good times!
