"Smiling like a rainbow, Burning like an asteroid”   

Clubland is filled with duos, sometimes they grew up sharing bunk beds, sometimes they met on a dancefloor, or sometimes -as with Lord Fascinator & Kate Stein- they met on a tropical island after one had commissioned the other to create several giant monsters for a music video. Fast forward through ten years of costumes, chemicals, religious art projects and "Mad Max yoga retreats", they have finally cemented their relationship in the studio with their Primary EP, 4 tracks of psychedelic synth-pop, cowboy disco and cosmically inclined iridescent electronica.   

Living in LA in 2022, where they found themselves sharing a crumbling castle turret, the EP started to take shape when Kate - the aforementioned monster maker and now up & coming DJ and producer - shared her latest demos with Lord Fascinator. Aided and abetted by both the musical ghosts of Laurel Canyon and a regular supply of caffeine the pair began to craft these demos into an EP that segues from sublime synth pop odes to chemical love and intoxicating attraction through to country disco without missing a beat.   

The EP kicks off with Chemistry, a song whose spacey synth arpeggios wrap themselves around trippy house beats and a bass line that pulses like the heartbeat of a planet. It's a third eye opener of a track, one that kicks down the doors of perception only to find a secret nightclub filled with neon smiles hidden behind and perfectly sets the playful mood for everything that follows. As it happens what follows is the cosmically inclined synth-pop and trance inducing disco of Asteroid. A paean to "falling in love on drugs" Asteroid somehow finds the hitherto unknown sweet spot between Spiritualized and Lipps Inc. and, thanks in no small part to Lord Fascinator's celebratory chorus, blazes like its namesake across the night sky.   

So far, so cosmic. What you may not have been expecting then is country touched club banger Horse House, a track that combines a galloping hypnotic house beat and pulsating synths with all manner of Morricone'esque whistles, lonesome guitar twangs, equine snorts and, of course, the repeated chant that "there's a horse in this house". The track may have started life as a joke but its effect on dancefloors has been anything but and Horse House joins the select ranks of other fine western themed classics that have curiously littered the history of club music.  

Finally, to close out the EP, we have Le Petit Martien, which despite its extraterrestrial title and occasional French lyrics, maintains the western vibes, cantering along at a steady 110bpm. It’s a bit like the impossible love child of say the Bad Seeds’ Red Right Hand, Serge Gainsbourg’s Bonnie and Clyde and one of Todd Terje’s more playful moments, in other words the perfect way for this free spirited EP to ride off into the sunset.

Biography
 Having cut her teeth in the art world working in spatial design Kate Stein made her musical debut in 2021, her hypnotic take on house quickly seeing her make appearances on labels sick as Roam Recordings, Playground Records, TAU and Rotten City.  Lord Fascinator meanwhile began his musical career as the frontman for Australian rock band Children Collide. Since relocating to NY and moving behind the decks he's DJ'd and performed all over the world sharing stages with the likes of The Avalanches and Tame Impala, been remixed by Prins Thomas, collaborated with Simple Symmetry, scored Hollywood films and produced immersive dining experiences in Mexico.

'Antoni Maiovvi is an artist like few others. “Knights of New Haven” summarises his unique ability and unparalleled range. This return to the Bordello reflects the influence of the West Coast Sound of the Netherlands as well as that machine music of his adopted home of the U.S. “Later Not Lately” bends bars above a throbbing kick, hi-hats ruffling the clean arcs of string. Echoes of Chicago and Detroit penetrate the EP. Melting melodies fold and oscillate under the crashing cymbals of “Slack Blabbath”, staggered synthlines jolted by tight percussion patterns. A brother-in-arms opens the flip, Danny Wolfers drafted in under his Legowelt moniker to turn his magic to “Later Not Lately”. Undulating undertones are sliced by serrated snares before a sordid TB303 is unsheathed, Wolfers’ soulful and squalid retelling of the original. “The Madness in the Method” closes. Fizzing static blurs drum patterns, a taut note piercing the dense bass fog. Teetering between the profound and the profane, Maiovvi pivots his horror disco trademark sound with driving house drums and devil-may-care grandeur. An EP of epic proportions.'

On the flip, Cafius & Fel C take us a little deeper with the aptly-named ‘Digital Satisfaction’. Again, their use of layering and arrangement is essential to this track’s intricate and impactful nature. Wonderfully uplifting melodies work in harmony, while the funky bassline and crisp beats keep you moving. German electronic music producer Daniel Herrmann, better known as Flug 8, announces his fourth album on Ransom Note Records, 'Skynet' - a minimalist electronic meditation on societal contradictions created during the pandemic era. 

Recorded in Germany's Taunus Studio before Herrmann's relocation to Denmark, 'Skynet' represents a deliberate step towards stripped-back production methods. Working with just a drum machine and an analogue synthesiser, he crafted each track with an intentional focus on essential elements before carefully layering intricate additional aural textures over it. 

The album emerged from Herrmann's observations of systemic inconsistencies during the global covid lockdown period. While not explicitly political, Skynet channels these observations into compelling electronic compositions that invite listeners to draw their own conclusions. 

“I felt the need to do something critical of the system. For me it was more about reflecting on a number of inconsistencies of that time, juxtaposing them as counterpoints and in this way getting inspiration for the respective pieces.” 

The project benefits from the masterful touch of renowned producer Jörn Elling Wuttke, who handled the mastering duties. Elling Wuttke was one half of the amazing The Primitive Painter with Roman Flugel whose self-titled 1994 lost classic album of sonorous IDM got a fitting reissue on Apollo a few years back. Further, Biotech features collaborative vocals from biologist turned singer, Hans Trapp.

Skynet marks a significant milestone in Flug 8's discography, serving as his final album produced in Germany before embarking on a new chapter in Denmark. The result is a powerful bookend, a goodbye to time’s past and a testament to the ability of music to process and reflect upon challenging times.

Gert van Veen began his musical career in the late 70’s. He played guitar, bass and keyboards in bands with musicians who later became famous with Urban Dance Squad and Spinvis. Van Veen himself chose a more experimental electronic direction and found the ideal musical platform in the Amsterdam house explosion of 1988. After several successful releases in collaboration with DJ Eddy de Clercq, including the very first Amsterdam house record 'Pay the piper' and the club classic 'Dish n tell' (House Of Venus), he started the (Detroit-)techno project QUAZAR in the summer of 1990, with wing man co-producer Eric Cycle. 
A year later, the first Quazar album ' The Seven Stars' was released, after which the group - expanded with dancers - embarked on an extensive Dutch live tour.

In 1993 van Veen started Welcome to the Future, a series of parties at Paradiso in Amsterdam, for which he invited befriended techno and house acts. The first editions included Speedy J, Orlando Voorn (1993) and the still barely known Underworld (1994), which Welcome to the Future later named as the moment the group broke through in the Netherlands.
After nine years of partying in Paradiso, Welcome to the Future moved to the new Amsterdam club Studio 80 in 2005, which van Veen as creative director (2008-2013) helped gain international fame. In 2013 the intimate Studio 80 scored an impressive 35th place in the DJ Mag Top 100 of international clubs. 

From 2007, Welcome to the Future also became an open-air festival, in nature reserve the Twiske. 15 successful editions were held between 2007 and 2022.
The final Welcome to the Future ('The last dance') attracted 25-thousand visitors in 2022.
In addition to being a producer, live act and party organizer, Gert van Veen is also an author. He graduated in musicology, was music editor at the Volkskrant for 15 years and wrote several books about music and the music world.
In 2018 van Veen received the Amsterdam Dance Event Lifetime Achievement Award, in 2022 a gold medal from the city of Amsterdam, the Andreas penning, as an ambassador of Amsterdam night culture.
