PREMIERE: Antoine Sy - Listening Comprehension [BinarySound]

Testament to the A&R associated with driving forward the sounds of the underground, Claus Voigtmann’s Subsequent label continues to showcase an array of new talent. As a DJ himself, Voigtmann is already much loved in the scene. His energetic, groove-fuelled sets have become sought after for any UK festival of this flavour and beyond. And when he’s not behind the decks, he is formulating future moves. DMC is invited along for the next.

The Liverpudlian artist was already previously spotted by Claus, clearly making an impression with ‘Love’ on Friends of Sub II. As a label, Subsequent takes focus on nurturing the new, blurring the boundaries of genre specifics. At the same time, it remains a place for friends and affiliates to take the direction of their choosing. DMC has done just that, now with four full tracks of his own available on wax. Adding to what already has been a tremendous year for the Berlin-based producer, Nat Wendell returns home for his third release on his very own imprint, Depths of My Soul. On the surface, DMS 003 may appear to be vintage—and pulsating—Wendell. Under the cracks of these three tracks, though, is a producer moving towards music as a tool of political and musical advancement. 

A1’s “Takes These Chains off My Mind” is an explicit cry from liberation away from mental slavery, an anthem for, in the words of Wendell himself, people “emancipating themselves from mental slavery, placed on black and people of colour alike.” 

B1’s “Tha Music” plays on similar ideas of music as liberation, jolting dancers into submission with its rolling hats and snappy arrangements that will easily fit into any house head's bag. Judging by the name, 

B2’s “Questioning Existence” may seem a tad existential—but, taking a late-nite 90’s garage cue from his own hometown, it’s anything but!

Our debut vinyl-only EP comes via Neik, alongside a remix by Noha.  The atmospheric frequencies of “Radio Tango” are built for the moments that bookend the party, a slice of building raw euphoria. Then comes the skittering bounce of “Doc Knock,” a cut filled with its own playful sounds that warm and soothe. “Desmaterializado,” and its hurried bassline, turn slightly more experimental without losing its groove. Noha follows up with a dreamy, drum-filled remix fit for dawn as the record draws to a close. These are tracks to reflect on when the magnetism of the night before won’t quite leave you, even as the next one begins.

It’s October, which usually means we get to celebrate ADE.

Since this is obviously not happening, we felt like stepping up and showing some love to the artistic talent of our scene in a different way. Obviously our beloved scene, and the entire industry surrounding it, has been hit disproportionately hard by measures related to the Corona virus. 

The VBX CODE project is our first real step into the world of Bandcamp, after having made our back catalogue of releases available digitally not too long ago. VBX CODE is going to be a series of digital only samplers,  available through our Bandcamp page. The tracks featured represent the VBX vibe as well the kaleidoscope of sounds we love and miss so much.

All of the profit made of these tracks will be divided equally and exclusively across the artists involved.This means we won’t be taking anything as a label, in the hope that our platform will amplify the reach of the creators involved.

We are all in this together and we will get out of it together!
