Tim Clemente is a living legend in many circles. While many of us have never known who he is or what he’s done he has impacted the world in his own way in a number of different elite fighting forces. He’s been an FBI special agent, swat team member, and an undercover drug smuggler assisting in the takedown of a major Mexican cartel. 

He’s been called one of the best terrorist hunters in the world and has been a subject matter expert on a number of major news outlets. Beyond all of this he’s also impacted Hollywood by acting as a creative consultant on films and TV series such as NCIS: Los Angeles, The Unit, Lie To Me, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, and feature films, including Now You See Me, Smokin’ Aces 2 and Killer Elite. Tim has 2 film scripts currently in production/casting: .38 and Secret Soldiers.

He has led men in battle on many occasions both in distant lands, as well as here at home as we struggle in the first civilian division as veterans.

My time with Ivor was fantastic as it always is. He is a consummate professional with no need for bravado because he knows his practice and specialties inside and out. With a career that spans well over two decades his kindness and humility is that of a man that genuinely has nothing left to prove besides his drive for contribution and his love for his fellow man.  The contribution that I’m most familiar with that Ivor is making is around covert protection strategies and this component of private security is gaining momentum and popularity very quickly. No matter what type of security detail you are currently running I believe there are definitely tools that can be borrowed from this discipline that will simply improve the overall quality of your security strategy. 

 

Ivor Bio 

Ivor Terret, is currently based in Israel, where upon leaving national service in the Israel Defense force and Israeli Police he was selected to help found and architect a government Surveillance Detection and Covert Security Unit tasked with protecting Heads of State and Strategic Sites. Prior to joining the unit, Ivor was the first in South Africa to lead a security organization securing 60 medium to high risk faith related sites in Cape Town. 

Ivor has designed and implemented security master plans for covert counter terror units, high-risk facilities, protective details and has consulted on a myriad of projects including mass transport hubs, business parks, hotels, residences, high risk facilities and factories. 

Ivor brings over two decades of international counter terror experience at both the official and private sector levels including instructing hundreds of students from high-risk facility security teams, government covert VIP units, government Surveillance Detection units, hotel security senior management, aviation security personnel and senior management, specialized law enforcement and counter terror units as well as corporate EP and SD units. 

Ivor met the stringent standards for teaching counter terror security procedures as set forth by the Israeli Police Force and has delivered counter terrorism focused security training to security forces working in high risk areas within Israel. 

Ivor enjoys public speaking and has presented at London's Counter Terror Expo, numerous occasions at ASIS international conferences and regularly appears as a security expert on international news shows. 

Ivor holds an MSc in Security and Risk Management from the University of Leicester where he was awarded the esteemed Dissertation of the Year Award for his research. Ivor is the elected Chairperson of the ASIS Israel Chapter for year 2016 and 2017.

EP 20 Covert Protection

I’ve never really known too much about K9s or even been really all that interested in working with them but I’ve always respected their tactical applications.
Their amazing sense of smell, agility and the very useful psychological effect
they have on humans.
The K9 is truly man’s best friend in the animal kingdom I believe and so I find it only fitting that they are also helping us achieve our goals in the private security industry. I must admit that I was a bit skeptical and cautious initially learning about some of the concepts these gentlemen are implementing within the private security with these dogs but I must also admit that I was also impressed to hear about their victories and also the capabilities they are bringing to the many security teams out there.
Depending on the client’s security needs, it seems a canine can be a somewhat unusual but perfect answer to various security concerns within a larger overall security strategy, conversely for some a canine might actually be all that they need depending on the clients threat level and the sophistication of the security concerns. I might even dare go so far as to say that more people on the planet could benefit from just a protection dog
more than that actually need an entire security detail of qualified agents.
Not that the dogs are better than agents but there is a demographic out there that is right underneath the ultrarich VIP and just above the wealthy
consumer that doesn’t necessarily need a human level of protection but could definitely benefit from all of the canine’s attributes.

This has been a fun series and this is the third episode we’ve done centered specifically around everyday carry gear. The goal has been to understand what many professionals at the top of the game are using out in the field right now, today! 

As many of you know Ed Calderon is as real as they come and his background is extremely diverse with operational experience on both ends of the covert and overt sides of the spectrum. As a result, we learned many things from him that are useful to the good guys but what I find most interesting about him, to be honest, are the things that he learned from the other guys and that he now uses to help us all improve our game. 

Some of you may be surprised that it truly doesn’t take a lot to be effective in many areas of combat, influence, and domination but it does take the right tools, at the right time with just the right amount of pressure.  When you do not have much of a budget, a technological advantage or manpower to spare, it is wise to understand the subversive tactics of the modern-day guerrilla and these types of things are woven into this interview.

Tom comes across as an extremely down to earth guy and honestly, that’s what I like most about him. As he spoke there wasn’t an error of this unrealistic capability that he could pretend that he has simply because he’s one of the main men in the knife fighting game but rather, he really seems to respect combative arts and the reality that in combat, anyone can kill you. 

We focused on knife fighting and blade encounters during this interview but it was also made clear to me that he also has a thriving firearms training component to his work as well.  His response to one of my usual opening questions concerning who he is has really blown me away and is probably one of my favorite answers all year… He said that he wants to be the type of man people can count on. To me I think that’s what everything is all about on so many levels in life, not just professionally but also with regards to your friends and family. 

The time I spent with Tom was fantastic, informative and straight to the point. I’m also looking to learn quite a bit more about edged weapons this year in order to become a more well-rounded protector in this case the podcast worked as a fantastic mechanism to have a conversation with one of the men at the top of this game. Lastly, I hear that he will be coming to my area to do some training early next year, I hope to join in there and do a review so keep your eyes open for that. ENJOY!  

Tom Kier is considered to be a subject matter expert (SME) by USSOCOM and holds a Master Instructor rank in Sayoc Kali “The Art of the Blade” with over 27 years of training in the system. He also holds full instructor and senior instructor ranks in other combative systems and is adept in striking and grappling systems as well as weapon-based systems. As the Director of Operations for Sayoc Tactical Group (STG) he has trained Military, Law Enforcement, and Government Personnel for the last 20 years. As an Instructor in concealed carry applications, he helped develop the comprehensive Integrated Combatives Program (ICP) for certain military and government clients in 2005. The (ICP) combines Firearms, Edged Weapons, Striking and Grappling into a fluid and practical application of force. Tom continues to refine and develop the (ICP) for those interested in developing this capability.

EP 60: Better weapon better position

This episode was taken from a live session I did inside of the Executive Protection lifestyle Facebook group. The EPL Facebook group is where it all started. At first, it was a dream simply to create a place where Executive Protection agents could share opportunities and industry tips tricks, and tactics with one another. It quickly grew and became much more than that as people started continually learning, sharing, and growing within our profession together there. 

As a result, I started this podcast which has turned into a beautiful project where I’m able to make contributions to the industry through those who will listen to help us all hopefully perform on higher and higher levels.
