This is a very special EP. As many might know Toy Tonics started as a sublabel of now sleeping German indie dance label Gomma records. Gomma, along with DFA, Output Records and a few other was known for a very ecclectic, different approach in dance music. On this LOST GOMMA MIXES EP you'll find 4 now lost tracks that came out about 10 - 20 years ago on Gomma, but fit very well in today’s zeitgeist again. Pete Herbert, In Flagranti and Jaques Lu Cont are featured. Who knows about modern disco - knows these producers. And there is a very special name here too: Nicky Siano. The now legendary New York DJ used to be resident at Studio 54 and other legendary NYC venues of the 1970ies and 1980ies. One of his remix works was for the Gomma records band The KDMS.

We’re welcoming some new faces to the Heist family with this release: JKriv & Peter Matson, who present their ‘Bigtime EP.’ We all know JKriv from his excellent Razor-N-Tape label and his work as a producer and remixer of all things soulful. JKriv has this excellent ability to lay down an organic and original sound and it’s that sound that felt like such a great match with Heist. Peter Matson is the front man of NYC post-punk afro band ‘Underground System’ and if you’ve heard their music, it should come as no surprise that the first outing of the duo is full of high notes. 

The lead track ‘Ewesse Ye’ occupies a space in dance music that leans towards Balearic nu-disco and proto-house, but the live elements, African vocals, and chants and cosmic synth work make it a track that’s hard to pin down to just one style. What we can say is this: it sounds huge without really trying to do so. It comes naturally, just like the vocals of Cameroonian singer Samy Love, who lays down his verses in style, with a clear nod to groundbreaking African artists like Ata Kak and Professor Rhythm. 

The remix comes courtesy of the multi-talented Auntie Flo, who completely flips the original into a deep afro-tech monster of a track. Dark synths and spaced-out percussion flow along throughout the track and the added layer of Marimba work complements the vocal and vibe of the track perfectly. 

On the flipside, we’ve got the slow burner ‘New friend’, which brings us back to Balearic territory. There’s a certain trance-inducing feel to this track with its looped chords and its layers of horns and solo’s. This is some serious eyes-shut-feet-in-the-sand material.

 The EP closing track is ‘Bigtime’. Built around a growling bass and subtle chants, this is perhaps the most clubby and in-your-face track of the pack. It’s the horn section that takes center stage here and you really feel that vibrant energy that must have been present in the live room when this was recorded.

The overall recording quality and ear for detail on this EP is outstanding and looking at the list of collaborators, you can only have respect for the way the live and electronic world are blending on this record. These tracks will no doubt add a bit of sunshine to any dancefloor, living room or festival.

@Monologues Records is a record label founded by Ben Gomori in January of 2015 and has evolved from what was initially a podcast series. Although the mixes are still coming with relative frequency, so are the records. The first seventeen releases were digital only but like many others before him, Gomori has decided to start releasing on wax and the last seven records from artists such as Nail and Leon Revol have been pressed to vinyl. The eighth 12" release from Monologues features a four track EP from DJ Aakmael with two of those being remixes, one from Ben Gomori himself and the other coming from none other than the man behind the imprint's previous release.

@LeonidMusique has had several releases come out in fairly quick succession this year with EPs on Secret Reels, Future Disco, and of course Monologues. The young producer is somewhat of an unheralded wunderkind flying under the radar with lovely sample work and moody textures found throughout most of his work thus far. In today's premiere he takes the already fantastic track Dahlin' from DJ Aakmael and gives it his own spin. Making do without the vocal chops of the original he takes the main chord samples and works around those. Leon's version is a lot darker and hazier, less upbeat and yet still very groovy. Detroit-inspired organ stabs adorn this slow burner while a hypnotic bass line walks around the arrangement. This is just further proof that Leon Revol should be on your radar if he isn't already.

Bolting Bits favourites Rhythm Section are continuing to showcase their impeccable A&R skills with the perpetual search for new and raw talent from across the globe. Next up on the docket for the South London imprint headed by Bradley Zero is a four track EP from String Theory, the 21st release on the label. We struggled to unearth any info on the Glaswegian production duo and there may not be any as of yet, considering this is their debut EP. This gives us all the more reason to dive straight into the music.

A four tracker that impeccably nestles itself in among the ranks of Rhythm Section International's already laudable discography, the "Modularity" EP combines a number of different elements and influences to form a polished selection of tunes. The aptly titled release has a heavy use of modular synthesis throughout the tracks, but that's not what makes it stand out. It's the way that it is combined with raw instrumentation and jazzy influences that's really got us singing this mysterious Scottish duo's praises.

Shifting our focus to the premiere, Con Moto does exactly what we just described. A bouncy rhythm and jazzy chords alongside a blooping modular synth line open this one up until the live bass takes centre stage, strutting its stuff along. This call and response takes place a number of times throughout, all while the different instruments try and take the spotlight from the bass, at times managing to find equilibrium all together. From the swelling strings and chords to the surprise cheeky organ and sultry, squelchy synth line, this is one instrument battle we can't stop listening to. The record kicks off with Those Quite Eyes of Yours, intertwining hollow-body guitar riffs around analog synth textures, moves into the late-nite piano stabs of There’s a Part of Me That’s Always True, then to the cheeky Tropicalia house groove of Now You Caught My Heart For The Evening, and concluding with the dreamy That Night At El Bukowski. It’s a melancholy and deep trip, perfect for listening or bumping in the club.
