"The phrase ‘Protect Me From What I Want’ comes from a Jenny Holzer piece that has resonated with me for a long time now. I can’t speak to her intent in conceptualizing it, but I always likened it to connecting to another person for safety: having someone who loves you to keep you alive. The idea that one could reach a level of indulgence into something so strong that they need help exercising restraint always frightened me. This ep is about falling in love with someone in that space, and losing yourself trying to fight their demons for them. Co-inhabiting a mutually destructive space alongside someone who’s navigating through a greater turmoil than you’re equipped to deal with, and not being strong enough to pull away when it damages you.

The last track on the ep, ‘I Can’t Live Like This’, is the moment of recognition that existing this way isn’t sustainable. It’s when you finally understand that you cannot heal alongside this person, but leaving their side feels like a betrayal; it’s dooming them to collapse under their own vices without you. Relinquishing that love and still being unable to let go. Within that moment of revelation, the hopelessness can feel infinite.

I don’t occupy that space presently, but I have multiple times in the past, and my lack of insight into how I ever left that space is terrifying to me, because it makes me feel like I don’t know how to avoid returning to it with someone new. It’s a disheartening cycle to be potentially caught in.

Granul is a visionary producer and genre-fluid tech creator with a sound that delves deep into texture while carrying enough weight to place it firmly in sound-system culture. He integrates elements from old-school club music, hip hop, break, and left-field bass; his sound includes heavy and layered bass-lines, organic percussion, old-school breaks, and deep, thunderous dark matter. His intention is to meld old and new techniques, and AI algorithms, deep learning, and programming are the main elements of his sonic production. Granul perceives sound synesthetically; he visualises rhythmic, digital, and progressive sounds as geometric shapes. Sensory mutations are primary in his renowned audio-visual artworks born out of unique street data collected in Istanbul.

Counting from one to ten is one of the first things we learn when we try to speak a new language. It's also a universal language we use in our beats. Numbers are the inspiration source of this album, and its roots are in the inherent rhythmical existence of numbers in music. There is a numerical theme in all the tracks. Every number matches with different grooves and rhythms, and it all comes together around a single “groove pallet”.

We close out this roster with an audiophile, an explorer of the universe of sound, and an eager researcher of the relationships between music and people. A.Fruit’s music reflects her inner world and emotional interactions with the outer world.

Anna Fruit was born in 1989 in Moscow, which was still USSR at the time. Her passion for music began in childhood at school, she played the guitar and sang her songs to friends. In 2008, while studying sociology at Moscow State University, she discovered Ableton Live, and it changed her life. She started making music and decided to get a second education as a sound engineer to improve her craft. In 2012 Anna graduated from the University and simultaneously completed her certificate in audio engineering. Then, for some years she worked as a sound technician on TV channels, in parallel continuing to produce electronic music. 

A.Fruit found her 160 bpm-focused sound somewhere between her longtime love of DnB, jungle, hip-hop, and especially footwork. Her professional music career began in 2015, fast forward to 2023 and she has built an impressive discography with 8 EPs and a multitude of original tracks and remixes on compilations worldwide. Her music has appeared on labels including YUKU, Cosmic Bridge, Med School, Teklife, Rua Sound, Sequel One Records, Black Marble Collective, and plenty more. On tours, Anna delivers a blend of 160-170 bpm from footwork and jungle to future beats and halftime.
Outside of her music, A.Fruit creates sound effects and music of other genres for PC games (Gremlins, Inc., Spire of Sorcery, Pathfinder) and provides digital mastering in her home studio.

There are many threads that weave through the YUKU catalogue, and everyone's tastes and journeys through the music we release are different. Some people might gravitate towards the more techno-influenced sound, others might enjoy the more bass-focused music, and so on. Some very special listeners hopefully enjoy the full palette of sounds and hear how it all ties together. It's the nature of curating a multi-genre label — that somehow, you have to trust your instincts about how all the pieces connect, and they usually do so in a multitude of ways.

For this journey, or collage of music, I wanted to explore the quieter and more understated side of the label — there are so many ambient, subtle, or non-dancefloor tunes — and to piece some of that music together in a cohesive way. I hope you enjoy listening!

It's imperfect, improvised, and recorded from the club environment, but I never prepare mixes anyway, so they are always imperfect and exploratory, and I embrace that :)
