Invited by DJ Hax to mark the 50th edition of the radio podcasts on Soundtropolis Radio, I saw the perfect chance to express my love for techno music. My recorded set was a journey through hypnotic rhythms to the intense beats of hardgroove techno. This was my contribution to the celebration, a way to share what makes techno so captivating to me.

OBRA FESTIVAL 2024 / yulz contest winner mix

yulz is a DJ from Katowice, Poland, and a music enthusiast since childhood. She is a graduate of two music schools, but it was in DJing that she found a way to share her passion with others. Her selection is primarily based on hardgroove, hypnotic techno, indie dance, trance, and different forms of disco, though she strives not to limit herself to these genres. She seeks inspiration from various sources. Post-punk, synthpop, and new wave have played the most significant roles in her musical development, and she returns to these genres whenever she's not digging into the heavier side of her selection. She is a fan of synth, tribal, acid, and even cosmic sounds. Personally, she loves listening to live music, whether at concerts or DJ sets. Despite her short tenure, she has already performed at some of the noteworthy clubs on the Polish scene.

Her new mix features a blend of indie dance, space disco, dark disco, and italo disco, all inspired by otherworldly sounds that she loves.

This is a recording from a party at @ Cel, where I played the warm-up before @lucinee (such a great opportunity for me!). You'll find plenty of synth, groovy techno and trance here. In my opinion, it's one of the best sets I've played so far, which makes me even more excited to share it with you. I highly recommend giving it a listen!

@ CEL & LUCINEE / yulz livecast / 23.11.24

Almost three months ago, I bought Ableton without knowing anything about music production. When I launched it for the first time and saw the vast range of possibilities and the complex interface, I doubted I could create anything at all – even though I had some theoretical musical knowledge. However, I decided not to put any pressure on myself. I relied on intuition and, through trial and error, slowly started to figure out what it was all about.

It was hard at first, but every small step motivated me: creating drums, coming up with a melody, crafting a cool bassline. And that's how my first production came to life: *bedtime cartoon.* Why that name? This track evokes a specific feeling of nostalgia for me, reminding me of those childhood evenings spent watching cartoons before bed. It was that magical moment I always looked forward to, signaling the day was coming to an end. I wanted my track to somehow capture that atmosphere.

I think it's hard to classify it into one genre – it's more of a mix of different elements that reflect the sounds I love: there's a bassline inspired by Moroder, synth pads (definitely in a minor scale), a touch of hardgroove loops, and a bouncy yet rhythmically simple drum pattern.

The hardest part of the entire process, however, was finding the courage to share my work and ask for feedback. That's why I'm grateful to everyone who helped me along the way. I hope you enjoy my first track, and if not, there are more already in the works 😉

Not long ago, I released my first production, and now I’m back with another one! This time, I’ve created a dark disco/indie track, where one of the main elements is sampled vocals from "Spokój" by Super Girl & Romantic Boys.

I’ve been wanting to remix one of their tracks for a while now – they’re a band I truly admire (if you don’t know them yet, go check them out!). At first, I planned to make a club remix, but eventually, I decided to use only the vocals and build the rest from scratch. I’m really happy with the final result and can’t wait to play this track in a club for the first time! 

A huge thank you to @alaudamuzik for helping with the mix and mastering – your advice truly brought out the best in this track! And of course, massive thanks to Super Girl & Romantic Boys for allowing me to use their vocals and for all the music that has inspired me!
