Now regarded as one of the most influential Japanese haiku writers of the twentieth century, Yamaguchi Seishi was an influential representative of the Hototogisu School (founded by Kyoshi, his teacher). A collection of 300 of his works entitled The Essence of Modem Haiku was published by Mangajin Inc in 1933.

night train the briefly lit lives of others   ( Naviarhaiku 295 )

(I met the authour of the above Haiku, Mark Gilfillan at the Naviar Haiku Festival in London last year when I performed. This weeks haiku jumped out to me and I had an idea straight away of how to transfer the words to sound - a looping train sound and the flicker of sounds - like briefly lit lives - cutting across the track.)

A friend of Naviar and regular contributor of haiku for its challenges, Mark Gilfillan just published his latest haiku collection: A Portable Universe, printed by Alba Publishing.

Mark was one of the panelists at our latest Naviar Haiku Fest in London last October. He’s a member of the British Haiku Society and has been writing haiku and senryu for around seven years, His first collection Ghost Moon received positive reviews from esteemed American haiku Journal Frog Pond and the British Haiku Society’s Blithe Spirit.

The author ofthe week is Takai Kito, a disciple of Yosa Buson. Despite becoming a professional haikai master in 1771, Kito remained one of Buson’s most trusted disciples until the death of the great master, and was the de facto coordinator of Buson’s haikai group.
