Program notes:
Named after Arthur Rimbaud’s poem “Le Bateau Ivre” (“The Drunken Boat”), this piece depicts the narrative development of the loss of innocence and naivete due to the exposure to the shocking realities of life. The piece reflects this internal battle between the conflicting forces of purity and truth. The quotation of the old folk song “London Bridge” symbolizes childhood innocence and ignorance. The tune becomes affected and distorted throughout the piece, representing how the cruel truths of the real world grab hold of this purity and make it twisted and demented. And like a drunken boat, the piece drifts off into the capricious sea…
