Deep [in The Basement] Mix

An ode to a bygone era of house music.

After discovering that some of my favorite house records came from the 90s and early 2000s, I spent the last few months searching the depths of the internet for the best tracks I could find that pertained to distinct sounds I had always wanted to play. Something about these tracks' rawness, swing, and overall lack of polish that I couldn't get enough of. From the curation process came the recording phase which for one of the mixes took four tries. I felt like Liam Neeson by the third Taken movie.. like we know how this goes, do we really need to do this again?

Nonetheless, the result of that labor of love are these two mixes. Many people inspired these mixes but few pushed me to newer bounds of music more than Chaos in the CBD, Ian Pooley, The Groove Boys Project, and of course, my brother Kevin.

Inner Chords is a tried and true deep house mix with songs from 1993 to 2005. Tracks that contain but aren't exclusive to ethereal vocals, deep chords, groovy basslines, jazz improvisation, and soulfulness beyond measure permeate the whole mix and will have you headbobbing into the wee hours of the morning. The mix is intended for a night in solo or with friends accompanied by something to wind down the night with: a bowl (or two) and/or a glass of wine.

Inner Chords (Subduction Mix)

Techtonics is an old school tech house mix with tracks from 1995-2003. After listening to a few Chaos in the CBD sets, I was forever changed by their selection, range, and overall sounds they were playing. Coming to know their tracklist, I made it a mission to find tracks in a similar vein to the tech house they were playing. Tech house from this era contains that hard hitting aspect like it does today but with more range and crossover between other genres at the time. Expect punchey basslines, loads of percussion, and sounds that just aren't replicated these days. Think 3 AM Manchester warehouse rave circa 2001... if you can even envision that: dark, super sweaty, a bit of you know what involved, and most importantly people dancing their asses off until the break of dawn. What a glorious site.

Techtonics

Live From Da Underground — the Afterparty Mix is a tribute to the roots of house music. Specifically for this mix, a focus on Garage, Deep House, and Classic House. I wanted to continue to go down the route of deep and soulful sounds but with attention toward the dancefloor. If Inner Chords was about staying in, the Afterparty Mix is about going out until sunrise grooving to timeless classics. 

The sourcing of tracks took another step deeper into the early 90s and further into the underground. The origins of discovering these tracks ranged from DJ sets, really hidden Spotify playlists, specific Youtube channels, and hours going through catalogs of records on Discogs reading through comments. It was a real joy to go through discographies and learn the rich history of labels such as Subliminal, Fourth Floor, Strictly Rhythm, Pagan, Paper Recordings, Guidance Recordings, Glasgow Underground, and MAW just to name a few.

This mix is a nod to people all over who experienced these tracks firsthand on the dancefloor. I also want to attribute this mix to San Francisco and its almost-forgotten rave scene. Going through so many records, I came to find so many allusions to the SF scene, and as a Bay Area native myself, it pains me to see that there isn't one anymore. After visiting it recently and meeting the owner, it was a sad sight to hear him discuss the heyday of a once-thriving scene only to witness all the creatives leaving and being pushed out. Despite this, I hope this mix can bring back good memories of people's days in San Francisco and all over from 1990 - 2002 and forever on.

Live From Da Underground — Afterparty Mix

Live From Da Underground — the After Hours Mix is a tribute to underground scenes all over particularly Chicago, Detroit, and NYC. These places fostered a space for these scenes to not only arrive but to thrive. This mix is a continuation of the Live from Da Underground Series. It is a sort of fusion between my two previous deep house mixes. Essentially, tracks that range from relaxing at home to grooving on the dance floor and everything in between. 

The sourcing of tracks continued into the early 90s and further into the underground. Still more discovery through DJ sets, really hidden Spotify playlists, specific Youtube channels, and hours going through catalogs of records on Discogs reading through comments. More treasured labels I enjoyed going through included Sub-Urban, Digital Dungeon, Hi-Bias, and Slip-n-Slide to name a few.

This mix is a nod to the OG American DJs putting out what was at the time new and groundbreaking sounds. Seeing how much love and respect these sounds still get today really goes to show just how timeless this era of house music has become. I hope this mix can instill new listening patterns and also allow people to reminisce on good times from 1991 — 2007. Much love and thank you guys all for the support ❤️.

Live From Da Underground — After Hours Mix

Boogie Delights has been a project that I have always wanted to do since I started DJing. It’s a collection of 70s and 80s Funk, Disco, Soul, and R&B intended for the dance floor. I’ve always loved these sounds but never really had the confidence to do a mix like this until I started posting on YouTube. To see the love and reception I’ve received is nothing short of amazing and something I’m really proud of. I am grateful for all the support and tenderness felt my way. 

To be quite honest, I was a bit burnt out on House music and perhaps music in general, but starting the curation process for this mix got me out of that slump (don’t worry a new House mix is very much on its way). 

These sounds have been an essential part of my childhood and musical development. After really getting into House and Techno, going back to these sounds added more meaning and realization that these genres are all interconnected and/or a response from one another. 

It was a real pleasure digging through so many records digitally and physically. I do plan on eventually spinning vinyl but for now, it’s a lot of going through record stores, Discogs, YouTube, and digital catalogs. I really fell in love with a lot of the vocalists from back then, who I feel just had stronger technical prowess and ability. Some of my favorites include Phyllis Hyman, Gwen McCrae, and Angela Bofill. So much rich instrumentation came from this era starting from the mid-70s through the early 80s as artists’ ideas of dance music emerged, shifted, and gradually evolved. Going back to the roots of the music that really inspires you is a delightful journey in and of itself. I think that started for me with my parents playing music at dinner and going through samples of my favorite underground Hip-Hop records. There were so many records I wanted to include but didn’t for one way or another. I included that Spotify playlist below. Thank you guys again for the love.
