Lithuanian musician and sound artist Marija Rasa, aka emer, is a master of texture and tone. In her recent album 'sea salt', she creates a mesmerizing palette of rustles, clicks and clangs, that spiral in freefall. Layered vocals are fragmented and compressed into the most minute of spaces, transmitted directly to the ear as whispered messages.

Her somewhere mix takes a cinematic, expansive approach to composition, with Janet Cardiff's potent narration exerted as a guiding tether. Marija expertly weaves through layers of abstracted ambient and dismantled techno, concocting an undulating pace that stretches moments infinitely, resulting in deep, resonating echoes. As the parts come together, fortuitous sounds create a spine-tingling euphoria, glistening in their warm and blissful transience.

q. pls introduce yourself
a. Hello hello, I’m Mitch, I make music under the name Bluetung.

q. is there a story behind the mix?
a. It was recorded at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney coinciding with their ‘1001 Remarkable Objects’ exhibition, which was quite an unusual hodgepodge of archival pieces from their collection stripped of context and intention, curated for purely aesthetic appreciation… much like a godforsaken dj?
Considering the venue, I wanted to dig deep into Antipodean sound art and play some artists who belong in the hallowed halls of our history — which the first half showcases — then by the end I was just having some silly fun with it. Shoutouts to Del for the invite and Ry for recording on the night.



q. what’s the best way enjoy your mix? 
a. On the speakers while you’re cooking, background as you read (don’t mind the spooky start), headphones on the train, it’s a weird journey.

q. describe a favorite object in your living room...
a. Record collection and cat :’)

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
a. I haven’t really made any music for a year and planned to continue the break while I finish my electrical engineering degree… but after playing some really inspiring shows and copping a 12 string guitar the itch to make new music has well and truly returned. I’m just taking things slowly though, I’ve had a crazy year and I want to spend more time with friends and going hiking.
