The fifth in Joe Acheson's annual series of studio mixtapes for Tru Thoughts Records comes in two parts, and is timed to celebrate the upcoming release of 'Archipelago Remixes EP (Part 2)', the follow-up to 2013's first remix EP of the second Hidden Orchestra album.

The main theme of the mixtape is remixes, both of and by Hidden Orchestra, and the mix also contains the customary eclectic wealth of music from around the world, multi-layered mashups and reworkings, field recordings, and plenty of spoken word including interviews and poetry recitals.

Part 2 of the mix will be released in the next few weeks.

The only full tour the Hidden Orchestra live band are making in 2014 is around Europe from March 26th to the end of April - there will also be a few one-off gigs and festival appearances - www.hiddenorchestra.com/dates

Out 12th May, the second in the Archipelago Remixes EP series brings more stunning new versions of tracks from Hidden Orchestra’s second album, ‘Archipelago’. Established and rising stars - Dam Mantle, Mungo’s Hi Fi, Floex, submerse and KRTS – work their magic on producer and band-leader Joe Acheson’s original productions, across two 10” records in a hand-stamped and numbered sleeve, limited to 500 units worldwide.

Opening the first 10” is “Seven Hunters (Dam Mantle Mix)”, which brings a noir-ish intensity to the original, a firm fan favourite. The Glasgow based Notown/Wichita signed producer re-programmes the original drums, creating a sense of space and suspense, and eliciting admiration from Acheson, whose heavily layered organic beats are an integral part of the stirring Hidden Orchestra sound, even requiring two kits in the live show: “it's the kind of way I treat drum recordings in my own work, so it's really nice to hear it done to my drum tracks”.

“Flight (Mungo's Hi Fi Remix)” sees an eagerly awaited hook-up with the Scottish crew, of whom Acheson has long been a fan, having partied at - and played on - Mungos’ legendary soundsystem at Knockengorroch Festival. Here they transform the intricate, folk-influenced “Flight” (which boasts almost a million soundcloud plays) for a bass-heavy dub dancefloor, while skilfully retaining snapshots of the original orchestration and atmosphere. 

“Disquiet (Floex Remix)” finds Floex returning the favour for a Hidden Orchestra mix of his own latest single. This charged, hypnotic version shows the dancier, more electronic side of the Czech clarinettist and producer’s work; twisting and heightening existing sounds, not least the heavenly harp solo, for an epic effect. Floex’s second official Hidden Orchestra remix, this adds to a growing list of joint ventures from these two like-minded creators. 

Two artists from Berlin’s Project Mooncircle label - London based submerse, and Brooklyn’s KRTS (the latter with a  bonus digital cut) – remix “Spoken”, each ramping up the strikingly percussive intro and spiralling down a different yet equally fascinating experimental electronic bass music path.

Like all of Joe's mixtapes, there is a broad and multi-layered range of music and sound from around the world, from contemporary releases stretching back to the 1940's and something from every decade in-between - including imagined collaborations such as Burial with vocals from Argentinian folk legend Mercedes Sosa, or Linton Kwesi Johnson reciting poetry over Tipper's immaculately-produced beats.

There is also a wealth of sound design and spoken word, taken from interviews with composers, radio programmes (many recorded by Joe), and poetry recitals.

Piano Interrupted, the anglo / french duo formed by Tom Hodge and Franz Kirmann is a musical entity in continuous reinvention, their music constantly evolving and transforming from concert to concert, record to record. Studio compositions are deconstructed for live shows, becoming brand new pieces, which in turn serve as a basis for future new compositions, like a never-ending “mise en abyme”
It was just a question of time then before the pair turned to other producers to ask them to rework their music. Concentrating exclusively on material from their last LP “The Unified Field”, Piano Interrupted invited a handful of artists and producers from Denovali Records' roster including Hidden Orchestra, Floex, Origamibiro, John Lemke, Saffronkeira and Second Moon Of Winter to reinvent some of their compositions. Oscillating between dub, techno, abstract hip hop, ambient and post-classical, each interpretation offers a completely fresh approach to the work, sometimes barely recognisable, and sheds new light on the infinite directions that Piano Interrupted's intricate compositions can be taken.
“The Unified Field Reconstructed” is a reminder of the possibilities and a promise of more exquisite exploration in the duo's 3rd album, scheduled for later this year, based on recordings taking place in Senegal (where Franz spent his childhood) in February 2015.

Piano Interrupted - Cross Hands (Hidden Orchestra Remix)

Joe Acheson improvises live remixes of his Hidden Orchestra material, alongside versions of tracks by Floex, Piano Interrupted, Macmaster/Hay, Long Arm, and Clarinet Factory - from the recent 'Reorchestrations' album, which is made up of reworkings of classical, folk and experimental musicians.
All accompanied by one of the Hidden Orchestra drummers, Jamie Graham, whose drums and percussion Joe is also sampling, looping, and effecting live on stage.
The tracks are woven into a single continuous mixtape performance, with looped percussion solos, field recordings and spoken word extracts.

Hidden Orchestra will be doing a full band live-AV tour in Europe and India in November/December 2015.

The “Flight” EP, out digitally on 7th November, is the second single from Edinburgh based quartet Hidden Orchestra.
Includes a Radio Edit of “Flight”, and in addition to “Dust (Floex remix)” the release features three new remixes: previous single “Footsteps” is given a beautiful reworking by Lost Twin, and “The Windfall” receives the treatment from both Maddslinky (aka Zed Bias) and The Colonel. Released by Tru Thoughts Recordings. The single is also out on 10” vinyl, care of Denovali Records.
