When it comes to disco, Dimitri From Paris @dfp is somewhat of an authority. An expert selector and connoisseur, the ‘gentleman DJ’ understands the history of the music that he plays and that he’s playing it for a new generation altogether. He’s been instrumental in the establishment of popular disco nights such as his own XOYO in London, while his remixes of disco classics have been burning up dancefloors across the world. About to headline a show for Mark Knight’s Toolroom at Studio 338 this week, we sat down to chat with the dance music icon about his history, his work, and about why disco will always endure.

I dedicate this hour of French, nonchalant music to those who's life was taken because they chose to play, rather than pray. 
In Paris, but also elsewhere around the world, they remind us how high is the value of freedom of choice, at the cost of their lives.

Recorded in 1978 and never remixed since, this is the first excerpt from the CHIC Anthology Box Set due out in October, I've been given the extreme honor to pick 5 songs to remix from the Nile Rodgers-Bernard Edwards CHIC organization vault. A one in a lifetime opportunity to work on the music from 2 persons who indefinitely changed the sound of Dance music !

Sister Sledge - Thinking Of You  (Dimitri From Paris Remix) (Snippet)

Here comes another snippet from a Chic song I remixed for the CHIC Org Box Set. From the 1982 Tongue In Chic LP this song wasn't widely released as a single. I chose it because it featured all of the CHIC V. 2.0 sound that would then form the basis of the soon to come Nile and Bernard productions for artists like David Bowie or Duran Duran. The NYC Dubby feel was already there in the recording, I just emphasized it with only extra effects and no added production.

Chic - I Feel Your Love Comin On (Dimitri From Paris remix) (snippet)

Vince Montana Jr left us on April 13, he was 85 years. 

He spent most of them writing, playing and arranging beautiful music. You can hear playing vibraphone (or vibes for short) on pretty much EVERY recording that came out of Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studio from the late 60s to the mid 80's.

He was playing the vibes with MFSB, composers Gamble & Huff's studio supergroup, the core of what is known as the Philly Sound. He conducted the same musicians as his own Salsoul Orchestra giving them many classic Disco songs, amongst them the infamous Runaway with Loleatta Holloway on vocals on which you can clearly hear Vince's trademark vibes licks. 

In the 90's newer school House producers got him back in the studio and he arranged strings for Mousse T, DJ Meme and most notably for MAW collaborating on the Braxton's cover of the Boss and remaking his own classic Runaway.  

When I first heard "The Way U Love Me" I immediately asked to remix it and a budget to be able to get Vince to score the strings and vibes in Philadelphia. I was certain the song could be turned into a Philly Sound classic. Despite suffering with major illness at the time Vince enthusiastically accepted and made my dream come true.

The T.S.O.P. version of "The Way U Love Me" is the remix I'm the most proud of. It features a cast of more than 30 people, each one of them putting a part of their soul in the recording.
The mix you can hear on this page is an unreleased instrumental edit where the forefront is taken by the string orchestra and vibraphone solos.

As India was saying in the NuYorican Soul remake of Runaway:
"Vince, play them vibes for us just one more time"
