D'Hella Déra was originally out on cassette in heavy cardboard box + 5 offset printing pictures + 1 vintage original engineering drawing from the mine site + inserts. Edition of 33. Éditions Vibrisse - 2014. 

B side of the tape contains "Le Sel Binaire", D'Hella Déra field recording processed by Alan Courtis. 

Field recording, potash mine, Staffelfelden mine shaft, town of Staffelfelden, Alsace, East of France. Mine shaft depth : 858m.

Since it was put into production in 1972, and until 2002, it ranked among the potash mining area's top sites thanks to the mining of 92 million tons of raw salt. Peaking at 75 meters its headframe was the highest one in Europe. The shaft owed its nickname "D'Hella Déra" (Hell's Gates), the miners gave to it, to the temperature that could easily rise over the 50°C mark in the galleries. 
The recordings have been carried out in September 2002. Attached to a halyard, a Sharp minidisc recorder equipped with a Sony ECM-717 mic has been brought 200 meters deep down the shaft. The shaft has been filled in end of 2002, the headframe brought down and the site dismantled in August 2003.

Lorenzo Abattoir is a sound artist from Turin. A key element of his work is the relationship between spiritual practices and unusual methods of audio processing where the sound of chaos merges with order and where every detail and every nuance seem to be carefully adjusted and controlled. He is also the founder of Mare di Dirac, a collective interested in the use of handmade instruments and analog electronics according to the principles of quantum physics.

Yvan Etienne has developed a work which takes shape as “things” made of sound. Designed like spaces, moments to experiment, his work is generally linked to certain contexts, climates induced by the specificity of sites and/or by invested materials. Made with electronic and acoustic instruments, his arrangements explore the processes and the states of sonar perception. As extension of his research, he co-directs the “Oh cet écho” series at Presses du Réel and teaches the sound practice and intermedia at HEAR.

Yvan Etienne is engaged in research in the field of sound art. He creates installations and is also a curator, teacher and publisher. As a musician, he composes and plays pieces using  electronic, phonography, analog synthesizers and the hurdy-gurdy. His research questions the perception and physicality of sound spaces.
