STEP RIGHT UP FOLKS! Do you have what it takes to beat the Saloon Tycoon at his own game!? If not, that’s quite alright. You’ll still make your way out of this place with a consolation prize of a shiny new bullet! If you have some sharp, eagle eyes you might even get to see your freshly engraved name before it finds its way between your eyes! Wowee!

For the Western theme, I wanted to try writing an old timey saloon jig that’s playable on its own (piano only version is available for download!). I was talking to my peepaw about this prompt and he was telling me about when he was a young whippersnapper, he used to go to the silent movies and some random townie would play the score to the movies on piano. It was common to see old westerns with this style of music. Very cool and weird to think about nowadays. Anyway, I found a piano patch in Analog V called “That Olde Tyme” and it sounds perfect for this! I thought my piano composition really hit the mark, but I wanted to have full western instrumentation as well, so I started adding the common elements: For the countermelody, I used the Native American Whistle pitched an octave up because I wanted to use whistling, but I’m dogshit at it and don’t own a VST yet. For the main melody, I used Folk Violin for some fiddlin’ action. Rhythm is being done with Nylon Guitar Hanika, alternating between galloping chord patterns, strummed chords, and some neat melodic layering. Acoustic Bass is using the K.I.S.S. technique ‘cause simplicity can be rad. Little Epic Percussion is holdin’ it down with some galloping rhythmic patterns with various layering and accents. That Olde Tyme Piano is still jammin’ away in the background!

Crazy? I was crazy once…

Sticking with the spooky festive season, I wanted to go for an ambient dungeon-type area. I just picked up EastWest's Spaces II convolution reverb so I experimented with the Cavern preset to place all the instruments in a cave setting. I also added some delay effects before the cave reverb and an additional reverb at the end of the plugin chain to try and make it more realistic. What do y'all think? 🤔

I chose Clarinet as the main instrument because it sounds the spookiest. Layering it with the Dark Cosmos pad adds that extra airiness for the ambient effect. The Tenor Ocarina and Rag Dun Bass Horn are perfect accompanying instruments since winds are gr8t at conveying openness and tension. I layered the Rag Dun Bass Horn with Low Brass for that growling bite in the bass and panned them left and right for extra color. Tuned percussive instruments like the Harp and THAT MF THANG work well with this prompt because they help to convey the fantasy of Medieval times being common instruments and SFX in fantasy games. The Glock adds magical flavor to the song. Lastly, I added bits of scattered Percussion as backing SFX, which is a common technique in ambient songs.

Blappo no…what are you doing? STOP IT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAlrighty then let's break this thang down. This is actually a boss battle theme about a killer clown from an old canceled project I worked on. I've been wanting to revisit it for a while and this prompt felt like a good time to do it. Boss themes are so much fun. I love writing chaotic melodies and arpeggios and just wacky and wild riffs in general. Since the theming is centered around clowns, I stuck with common instruments used in clown or circus music. I chose an Organ for the wild and tense chord combinations it can produce, and the staccato notes in the C sections sound so crispy and bouncy. The Xylophone scooby doo be goin' hard, with the octave layering coupled with the Bass. I also triple layered the Xylophone, each detuned 1 semitone from each other and the volume lowered and panned, so it gives a strange sound of uncertainty. I used a full Woodwind section for chords and alternating melody lines because they sound goofy and spooky, and I love when orchestral pieces use the Woodwinds to take turns playing melodies. So playful! The breakbeat drums just add another chaotic, and unpredictable layer to the clown theme and they just he*kin RIP dude.

A dark a gloomy tower with unknown shadowy entities scattered throughout? Let's split up gang!

For this prompt, I've had this motif stuck in my head from one of my previous unfinished projects that I've always wanted to expand upon. One of the main things that's been stopping me is I didn't have a good Harpsichord VST, but CineSamples Black Friday sale really came through this year. This Harpsichord sounds SIQQQ 🤙🤙🤙 It's such a unique and iconic instrument. It's perfect for those Medieval/Renaissance/Dark Fantasy vibes, which is fitting for the antagonist motif I've been dying to write. I originally intended to compose a boss fight with this, but it ended up being more of an interchangeable villain or level theme. The boss fight will come later and it's gonna he*kin RIP dude. Harpsichord battle themes are intense and I'm looking forward to seeing how this VST sounds in that scenario, especially once it's combined with various other instrument layers to added intensity. That's part of why I chose to write a solo Harpsichord piece. I wanted to know how it would sound, and it really can hold the fort on its own. Just imagine this in a game setting; You're adventuring through this castle with this theme playing, and then you encounter the antagonist and all of a sudden the music just explodes into chaos. 😱😱😱

Oh HELL YEAH BROTHER I love me some world/ethnic music and I've always wanted to try and write something in a Japanese style. However, I was also feelin' another 2D Platformer Level Theme/Boss Theme, so I chose Chiptune instruments. I really vibe with those styles of games and they're so much fun to write. The Shamisen has such an interesting sound to it, it almost sounds like every note is being quickly slid into it with a quick decay. It's a gr8t sound for these quick, upbeat riffs and arpeggios. It just sounds so intense! The Koto also has a noticeably unique sound. I think I could've done more with it like adding extra vibrato and bends because from the research I did, that's what I heard and to me, that's what gives it that traditional & iconic sound, but I wasn't confident in my skills. Oops 🙈 Also MIDI is just really a pain to automate bends and vibrato and nobody got time for that. For the other iconic Japanese sounds, I used the Hyōshigi which is just instantly recognizable, and I also used some percussive tom work which is commonly heard in ethnic/world pieces. I decided to use more of a Drum and Bass direction for those respective instruments because I like the way they sound in this style of music, and they help beef up the overall composition since the Chiptune leads are sort of thin on their own. Combining the Percs & Bass with the Japanese instruments creates a cool fusion of genres, which I'm a huge fan of. Lastly, I used an Airy Pad to help set the setting and provide some ambience the he*kin concept I was going for! Imagine you're out adventuring through a clifftop monastery, in search of a legendary warrior who has been exiled from their clan. The reason? Well…that's for you to decide in your game!
