This is a song that JJ created late one Saturday night on the piano, drums, bass, and guitar. He then presented it to the rest of the Eclectic Collective so we could do our thing with it. Josh replaced JJ's rough bass with his interpretation of the line as soon as Ken replaced the drums with his interpretation of the beat. Interestingly, Ravel's Bolero had a lot to do with the inspiration for the second part of the song. After the rhythm section was done, we turned it over to Stephen, who came up with some really subtle, yet much needed guitar lines. 

 We then turned it over to our relatively new collaborator, Mark, who came up with the lyrics and vocals. This is a lyrical and vocal songwriting debut for Mark, who was inspired by his very first listen to JJ's rough draft. Thus, this song is extra special for him.  

Mark's lyrics are about our Earthly relatives in the far distant future. At that point life on Earth will have just about reached its limits, and so mankind embarks on a journey through space to find another place to call home.

We all hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we did creating it.

Flowers Of Jupiter (The Eclectic Collective)

Hip Hop fans on Soundcloud are likely to have come across the prolific talent of Ian Greaves (aka @IPG1). Ian's smart & slick vocal tracks are widely used in collaboration by other artists, as I've done here with one of his more popular lyric tracks, "Modern Times".  

On this collaboration, all lyrics are written & sung by IPG1, and most of the music is performed by me, with the exception of the sampled vocalization in the middle bridge and ending, and a few minor sound effects here & there. The beginning starts off normal enough, but the middle section takes a bit of a left turn before I 'go off' on the synth in the second half. I kind of enjoyed working the sliders on the live synth performance.   ;)

HUGE thanks to IPG1 for his generosity and helping me put together what is effectively my first hop hop tune, originally composed as an instrumental track. The lyrics are a topic close to my heart too, so really enjoyed being able to add my 2 cents in a way.

This piece is out there - hopefully in a good way.  Sometimes you find a sound or mood and just go with it and follow where it takes you.  I am curious your thoughts on this.

Experiment #3 (Experimental Electronic/ambient)

This one's pretty typical of how I tend to compose music - I often create a drum beat I like, then add a bass and build around that. The main inspiration for this ditty was basically to play to a less common time signature, in this case a 7/8 rhythm. That reminded me of the funny 'yes, but yellow' meme circulating out there on the internet, so I whipped up this quick image in Photoshop to go with it (note the yellow slice is 1 eighth of the pie).  😊

I'm playing all instruments here on keyboard, except the slide guitar (dobro?), which is made up of several short loops in Garageband, sliced up to fit the 7/8 pattern I wanted)

Mother Africa

I have worked with many artists here (in Canada) and abroad in many mediums, video, photography, performance/installation , writing and poetry  and music mostly in collaboration with dance and artists that work with dancers.  I mostly have written music for dance and dancers.
 
I love making textures and sound and have mixed for many artists over the years.  I love working with soundscapes and will probably create some more soundscapes when I have the time as I love the amalgamation of organic with electronic and analog sounds. I love all types of music and am open to listening to most types but my true love are the masters of their instruments as I could never be like that - and I am well aware of the gift special people are given.
